Chloe and Kelly’s bitter feud

The best friends from Perth may be all smiles for the cameras but off screen their stand-off has reached boiling point.

The “well-travelled” cooking pals seem inseparable on My Kitchen Rules, but Woman’s Day hears Kelly, 27, and 28-year-old Chloe’s relationship has turned sour since heading into Kitchen Headquarters.

The friends, who have ruffled more than a few feathers with their know-it-all attitude on the show, have turned on each other. According to sources, the feisty pair have had a few heated bust-ups in the kitchen, which is to be expected under pressure.

“Kelly started mingling with the contestants from the other group and making friends,” says our insider. “Chloe was probably feeling left out and it seemed to cause some tension between them.”

We’re told the friction between the girls boiled over during a high-pressure challenge, resulting in Chloe storming off set.

Read more about Chloe and Kelly’s feud in this week’s issue of Woman’s Day, on sale Monday, March 10, 2014.

A car crash nearly killed my unborn baby

Samantha Goode was 19 weeks pregnant when a four-wheel drive smashed into her scooter. Miraculously, she and her baby survived but a medical emergency left her fighting to live a normal life.
Samantha Goode's son Myles

Samantha Goode was 19 weeks pregnant when a four-wheel drive smashed into her scooter. Miraculously, she and her baby survived but a medical emergency just five weeks later left her fighting to live a normal life.

For the past year, Samantha Goode has suffered crippling anxiety attacks. They come almost daily and leave her emotionally exhausted and frequently housebound.

But even in the safety of her home on NSW’s Central Coast, Samantha can’t escape the deafening sound of her own screams.

“I can still hear myself screaming as the four wheel drive slammed into me,” she says.

“I was driving my scooter to the train station as part of my early morning commute. I watched the car miss a stop sign … I couldn’t do anything except brace myself.

“People have questioned why I was on a scooter while pregnant. What they don’t know is that my GP gave me the okay to do so, and I was preparing to get off my bike as I started my third trimester.

“I was wearing all the safety gear one could wear – and I wasn’t the one breaking the road rules.”

Miraculously, Samantha and her unborn baby survived the crash, with the mother-to-be appearing to suffer nothing more than some painful grazes.

But five weeks later, it become apparent that Samantha’s injuries were far more serious than doctors initially suspected.

“I was in my bedroom when suddenly it felt as if my heart was going to explode,” she says. “I couldn’t catch my breath, all my limbs went numb … I was terrified.

“I was so weak I couldn’t call out for help, and had to wait, exhausted on the bed until my partner came home from walking our dog.”

Samantha Goode and her son Myles.

Samantha was rushed to hospital, where her heart rate was found to be dangerously high. She was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism – or blockage of the main artery to the lung – caused by a blood clot that had developed after the accident and travelled from her injured leg to her heart and lungs.

It’s a critical condition and doctors told Samantha her baby might not survive the treatment she needed to save her life.

“I remember screaming at them that I didn’t care about my life – just the baby’s – and they told me that I was their priority,” she says.

For 24 hours, the baby’s life hung in the balance as Samantha was given high doses of blood thinners and oxygen to reverse the damage of the embolism.

“We survived – but the rest of my pregnancy was marred by constant monitoring, daily injections of blood thinners and intense anxiety,” Samantha says.

Four months later, Samantha was thrilled to deliver a healthy baby boy, Myles, who is now eight months old. But despite her joy, she has been unable to enjoy motherhood because she is crippled by fear.

“Since his birth I have suffered daily flashbacks to the crash, and have struggled to be alone with him because I am so scared I will have another embolism,” Samantha says.

“I have literally been down on my knees begging my partner to stay home from work, terrified that something will go wrong if I’m left alone with Myles.”

Samantha is telling her story to help people understand the ongoing effects of road accidents.

“While we hear about fatalities on our roads, we don’t hear as much about people who suffer in other ways after a crash,” she says.

“The driver who did this to me got away with a ‘failing to stop at a stop sign’ fine – that’s it. A year on and I am still struggling with my anxiety, and I am yet to get back onto a scooter.”

Samantha is slowly starting to enjoy motherhood, building up her confidence to be alone with her beautiful baby boy, and trust in her ability to look after him without help.

“There’s so much that goes wrong on our roads, for no other reason except people are rushing around. I want everyone to stop for a minute – pause and hesitate before causing another accident like mine.”

Nikki Webster and her husband Matt McMah couldn’t be prouder.

The angel of the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony is all grown up…and she’s mum to a gorgeous baby girl!

Nikki Webster will forever be remembered as the freckle-faced, curly-haired cutie who flew high above the crowd at the Sydney Olympics 14 years ago.

But the baby-faced singer and dancer is certainly all grown up now. Nikki, 26, married her sweetheart Matthew McMah, 34, in a fairytale ceremony in 2012 and, just last month, the loved-up couple welcomed their first child, daughter Skylah.

“I think people still see me as being young and can’t see me as being a mum yet,” laughs Nikki, cradling tiny Skylah in her arms. “I can’t even believe I’m a mum! It’s the most incredible feeling to be given your child. It was magical and also a little bit unbelievable.

“I’ve held newborns before but to think she is yours and you have to look after her and nurture her for her whole life… it’s pretty overwhelming,” she admits.

But watching the smitten couple with their bub, you’d be forgiven for thinking they’ve been parents for years.

Magda’s journey: I can’t wait to be back at my best!

Our favourite TV star Magda Szubanski is vowing to pick herself up and lose weight again. She takes us on her personal journey

Magda Szubanski smiles wistfully as she reminisces about the day she truly embraced her healthy self after losing an incredible 36kg. “I was up at Cape Leveque [in Broome, WA] with friends, camping under an extraordinary full moon that lit the beach up like the MCG lights,” she says.

“It was so incredible. We all spontaneously ran down the dunes and started playing soccer on the beach.

“I remember being so light-footed on the sand – running, dodging and weaving and giving as good as I got. When I think about the level of fitness I had, how great it felt… and how I lost it, let it all go, I feel incredibly sad.”

Magda put on even more than she lost, topping the scales at 126kg last year – but now she’s fighting back, having already lost 8kg since January 3. And she wants to lose another 20kg – but this time there are no deadlines or pressure.

What could possibly make a mother throw her baby over a fence?

Postnatal depression is more than a case of “the weepies” for some new mothers — it can be deadly and often goes untreated.

Postnatal depression is more than a case of “the weepies” for some new mothers — it can be deadly and often goes untreated.

It drove 39-year old Amy Black drown her infant daughter and throw her body over an eight-foot fence, a court has heard this week.

The American was happily married to a British man and living in the UK when she gave birth to Zoe, but her husband Jack later told detectives she began having paranoid and suicidal thoughts.

On September 1, 2013, CCTV cameras captured footage of Black climbing an eight-foot fence behind her home and tossing her wet baby into bushes on the other side.

She later called emergency services and told police “Don’t bring Zoe back”.

“She wanted to die. She’s been unwell because she’s been crying a lot.”

A post-mortem examination of Zoe found she had most likely drowned.

In court Black pleaded guilty to infanticide on the grounds that she “caused the death of her child at a time when the balance of her mind had not recovered fully from giving birth”.

Prosecutor Timothy Spencer QC told the judge the “balance of her mind was disturbed, because she had not fully recovered from giving birth,” according to the Nottingham Post.

“I make it plain the Crown will not seek to litigate either murder or manslaughter in this case,” he said.

Her Husband told police during the investigation the couple had been a “wonderful, perfect family living a good and happy life”.

How serious is postnatal depression?

Post and Antenatal Depression Association (PANDA) CEO, Belinda Horton, told Woman’sDaythis sort of tragedy is frightening but uncommon.

She said new parents should understand suffering with depression does not equal being an unfit parent.

“This sort of case is incredibly rare but it does happen,” Horton said.

“You need to get help early to avoid such a rare and tragic outcome, but for most people suffering from postnatal depression, treatment is very effective.”

According to PANDA, there is a broad spectrum of mental health issues that new parents can face and the “baby blues” is the most common and the most treatable.

Affecting about 80 percent of new mothers, the baby blues involve tearfulness, anxiety, mood fluctuations and irritability and will pass “with understanding and support”.

At the other end of the spectrum is puerperal or postnatal psychosis, which only affects 1 in 500 mothers, but presents risk to the life of both mother and baby if it isn’t treated.

Ms Horton says it is important to look out for a two-week period of unusual behaviour in mothers and fathers after a baby is born.

“If mum and dad are out of sorts or not acting themselves for two weeks they should get help and talk to somebody,” Mr Horton told Woman’s Day.

She said it should be recognisable even in an overtired or stressed new mum.

“In that time mum should be able to get a really good sleep and feel back to normal at some point.”

“it is really important to look at the timeline of behaviour.”

Knitters wanted for penguin pullovers

Penguins might survive in some of the coldest places in the world but the ones who call Phillip Island home are in dire need of a helping hand to stay warm.

The Penguin Foundation, a charity based on the small Victorian island, has issued a global callout to knitters, begging them to send in tiny jumpers for penguins in rehab.

The little garments might seem ridiculous, but they could save the lives of the hundreds of penguins caught in oil spills each year, keeping the little birds warm and preventing them from ingesting the toxic oil while trying to clean themselves.

A thumbnail-sized patch of oil is enough to kill a little penguin. The oil matts the birds’ feathers, destroying their waterproofing and ability to hold heat.

The foundation receives thousands of jumpers a year from all around the world. Some of the most creative have included a design with an octopus and seaweed crocheted onto it, and one with red speedos and a six pack on the front.

If you would like to use your knitting needles to help save injured penguins, you can get a knitting pattern here. For more information, visit The Penguin Foundation’s website.

Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly

Two months ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Nicole Kidman’s new film Grace of Monaco has been revealed in its first full-length trailer.

The clip shows Nicole’s flawless portrayal of Princess Grace, demonstrating just how well the 46-year-old Aussie actress captured Grace’s demeanour, facial expressions and sense of style.

Set in 1962, Grace of Monaco explores the life former Hollywood star Grace Kelly during a dispute between her husband Prince Rainier III and France’s Charles De Gaulle over tax laws.

The film’s plot follows the international crisis and Grace’s personal crisis which saw her having to choose between returning to her old life as a Hollywood movie star or accepting that she would never act again and embracing her new role as a royal in the world’s second smallest country.

Film icons: Grace Kelly with her Oscar in 1955 and Nicole Kidman poses with her Oscar in 2003.

The Olivier Dahan-directed film has received criticism from Monaco’s royal family, including Grace’s three children Prince Albert, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie, which prompted Kidman speak out and clear up the confusion.

“This is not a biopic or a fictionalised documentary of Grace Kelly,” said Nicole. “But only a small part of her life where she reveals her great humanity as well as her fears, and weaknesses.”

The film’s director also says that while he understands the point of view of the royal offspring, the film was never intended to be an exact historical portrayal.

“I am an artist,” says Dahan. “I have not made a biopic. I have done, in any subjectivity, a human portrait of a modern woman who wants to reconcile her family, her husband, her career. But who will give up her career and invent another role. And it will be painful.”

The film, which also stars Sir Derek Jacobi, Frank Langella and Tim Roth as Prince Ranier, is due to hit cinemas overseas in May but is yet to receive an Australian release date.

Prince William has whisked Kate away to the Maldives for a romantic getaway ahead of their Australian and New Zealand tour.

The Duke and Duchess arrived in the island paradise on a British Airways flight at around 9.45am on Thursday, according to British royal reporter Katie Nicholl.

They will reportedly spend a week sunning themselves on a newly-opened resort located on its own private island in the northern Maldives.

It is not clear if they have brought their son Prince George with them but locals on the ground reported no sign of the seven-month-old.

If George has been left at home he will no doubt be under the care of his new fulltime nanny, reportedly a 22-year-old European woman hired by the royal couple earlier this month.

The new nanny will reportedly accompany William, Kate and George on their Antipodean tour next month to care for the baby while his parents are busy fulfilling their many official engagements.
