Annie Leibovitz’s famous portraits in book installation

Annie Leibovitz releases sumo-sized book of her famous work
Annie Liebovitz

Annie Leibovitz, the most important portrait photographer working today, has released a book that is “not really a book.” Designed to sit on a tripod stand and of “sumo” size, the work is more like an “installation”.

“You can find a photograph that you care about and leave the book open to that and sort of dwell on it,” Leibovitz told TASCHEN, who produced the book.

“It’s hard to design a book that is not really a book. Everyone who worked on this built it as a book while trying to understand it as an installation. I’m not sure we succeeded completely, but we tried. This is not a book that you’re going to put in your lap. You’re going to look at it from a distance. One picture at a time.”

Drawing from over 40 years of work, the book includes work from Leibovitz’s time at Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Vogue magazines. But she says that she didn’t want anyone to “look at the book and call it a retrospective.”

“This is not a retrospective. It is a kind of potpourri. A roller coaster. As you go through it, you forget what you saw in the beginning. You’re in another place toward the end.”

The bookends are a black-and-white photograph of Richard Nixon’s helicopter lifting off from the White House lawn after he resigned as president in 1974 and the formal colour portrait of Queen Elizabeth II taken in a drawing room of Buckingham Palace in 2007.

Production of the book is limited to a total of 10,000 signed and numbered copies.

Alisa and Lysandra: All is forgiven!

Image: Getty

The twins say they’ve moved on from last week’s nasty bust-up with judge Shaynna Blaze.

Last week’s furious run-in with Shaynna had the twins fuming, threatening to leave The Block, and claiming the famed interior design ‘had it in for them’. But what a difference a few days make!

Now that the dust has settled, they admit they’re feeling far more circumspect about her harsh criticism. “If anything it made us come back fighting that bit more, says Alisa.

These comments are a far cry from what the two 28 year-old twin mums from South Australia were saying just seven days ago, tearfully telling the cameras they felt they were being picked on.

“[Shaynna’s] got it in for us. We should never have come on this show,” Alisa said, biting back tears.

“I’m f***ing sick of it. Enough is enough. If you’re going to be like this then we may as well go home.”

Later, when chatting to Woman’s Day, she was just as fired-up.

“Her comments were that we were ‘try-hards’ and that she couldn’t stand to be [in our bathroom],” she added, pointing out that the comments stung particularly badly as they’d risked so much to set up their new interior business, including leaving their young sons again for another shot at The Block.

“It was a blow to our confidence… It felt like a bit of a personal thing. She’s got it in for us.

“I definitely think there’s an expectation of us, because of what we have done in the past. We have felt that all the way through the competition – with the challenges as well.”

Social media went into a tailspin with fans siding with the twins, and claiming Shaynna was ‘jealous’ of their success, something the judge was quick to contest, pointing out that with over two decades in the business, she’s more than qualified to criticise.

“I’m a big supporter of women so for [viewers] to say I’m jealous of them is laughable,” Shaynna told Daily Mail Online.

“For people to say I’m being mean to the twins is just not true. I judge it from what I see.

“Last year I was battered for giving them favouritism but this year I’m being pounded because I’m the total opposite and jealous of them — which is hilarious.”

A few days later, the girls issued a statement on Facebook, saying they were prepared to rise above the furore.

“We are certainly being judged more harshly this series but maybe we just need to take it as a compliment,” they wrote. “We will just have to try even harder to impress our judges.’

Kristin Davis regrets the shoes in ‘Sex and the City’

Kristin Davis says she feels guilty about the pressure Sex and the City placed on women to wear stilettos, saying that the program seemed to preach "You should be wearing heels like these."

The glamorous HBO program is famous for the stylish wardrobes and dazzling footwear of its four main characters, Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha.  Thanks to Carrie’s shoe addiction, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin developed popular appeal – even among women unable to afford such extravagant shoes.

But Kristin Davis, 49, who played the perennially immaculately groomed and dressed Charlotte, has expressed regret that the shoes she and her co-stars wore throughout the series stirred insecurities in women.

“I do feel guilt about the heels,” Davis told The Telegraph. “It did seem we were trying to say to women, ‘You should be wearing heels like these.'”

“Were they beautiful shoes? Yes. Were they appropriate for the characters? Yes, that’s what women like that wear,” she said. “But it became a bigger picture thing, where it seemed women should be wearing them every day.”

On set of ‘Sex and the City’

Davis says she rarely wears heels anymore. “It hurts when I do – you have to get in training for them, and it takes a lot of practice.”

In an interview last year, Sarah Jessica Parker revealed that her feet have suffered permanent damage as a result of playing the role of Carrie.

“I literally ran in heels. I worked 18-hour days and never took them off. I wore beautiful shoes, some made better than others, and never complained,” Parker told The Edit.

After later twisting her ankle on the set of I Don’t Know How She Does It, Parker visited a podiatrist and learned the extent of the damage. “I went to a foot doctor and he said, ‘Your foot does things it shouldn’t be able to do. That bone there – you’ve created that bone. It doesn’t belong there.’”

Prince William and Kate Middleton ‘trying for baby number two’

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate, are planning to try for a second child
Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince George

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are planning for a second child very soon, a royal source has told the UK’s Daily Star newspaper, adding to already swirling rumours about Kate’s pregnancy plans.

The source says that William and Kate are desperate for Prince George to have a little brother or sister. “They have made no secret of the fact they’d like three children and don’t see any point in waiting.”

“Kate’s just turned 32 and wants all her babies over and done with before she is 35.”

The Royal couple already have a second nursery in Kensington Palace and the recent hiring of a full-time nanny appears to be another clue that the family will soon be expanding.

Prince George is only seven months old, but it is speculated that Kate will emulate her mother, who fell pregnant with her sister, Pippa, just 11 months after Kate was born.

Doctors have reportedly advised the Duchess that she needs to gain weight, having shed a lot since the birth of her first child in July last year.

The X Factor star is caught up in a narcotics nightmare after pictures from a private party have been leaked.

Pictures and video have emerged of Home and Away star Johnny Ruffo at a recent Sydney party sitting around a table with lines of white powder on it.

In one photograph, Johnny appears to be using a credit card to arrange the mystery power into neat long lines along the table in an expensive Sydney hotel room.

The 24-year-old singer and actor is refusing to comment on the images, but a close friend who was at the “small private party” spoke exclusively toWoman’s Day.

“I don’t know who took the photos,” he says.

“I was at the party with him. We were just having fun.”

While the snaps don’t show Johnny touching the substance on the table, they’re sure to shake-up his clean-cut image.

“He is going to be pretty annoyed these got out,” says his fellow party-goer. “It was a small trusted group of friends – perhaps someone forwarded them on and that’s how they got out.”

But that’s the only word from Johnny’s camp so far. “I don’t want to talk about it any further,” says the source.

Johnny is notoriously private about his personal life.

Following his reported hook-up with The X Factor judge Dannii Minogue in 2012, Johnny managed to swerve tricky questions and refused to talk about the relationship, recently tellingWoman’s Dayhe had to “keep his head down” after news of the shock romance broke.

The photographs will no doubt send shockwaves through his fan base, who are predominantly young teenage girls, and their parents.

Dove billboard insults entire state

Dove "Armpit of America" advertisement referring to New Jersey.

Dove "Armpit of America" advertisement referring to New Jersey.

Dove has been forced to discontinue an advertising campaign that calls the US state of New Jersey “The Armpit of America” following a backlash from residents.

The billboard, which was scheduled to debut in July, features a woman wearing a white singlet top and raising an arm to display her underarm. The ad says: “Dear New Jersey, when people call you ‘The Armpit of America,’ take it as a compliment. Sincerely, Dove.”

Unilever, the brand’s parent company, made the announcement that it no longer plans to run the billboard that pokes fun at the garden state following dozens of angered New Jersey residents taking to Facebook and complaining on Dove’s official page.

Hetty Equality Rosenstein posted: “Your New Jersey ad is offensive. I am so disappointed. I love your self-esteem work and understanding of personal beauty. You should pull it. Now.”

Many posts also threatened to boycott the brand. “The New Jersey comment was rude….no more Dove for my household. Insult an entire state ..WOW!”, posted Nic Mybittersweets.

“Thanks for insulting New Jersey. I will be sure not to buy any of your products again,” said Kate Buffum Newmark.

Dove responded to each comment with a generic apology note: “Thank you for your comments. With our ‘Dear New Jersey’ advertisement, Dove deodorant never intended to upset the residents of the state. As a result of your feedback, Dove deodorant will not be moving forward with publishing or displaying this ad.”

In an emailed statement, Unilever said “We take feedback from our community very seriously and have decided that we will not be running this billboard advertisement.

“We did not wish to cause any misunderstanding and apologise for any offence.”

The statement also said the intention was to call attention “to the fact that armpits can and should be considered beautiful.”

A blog that critiques advertising has responded to the campaign, pointing out “Ugly underarms is an insecurity that Dove made up to convince you that you need to buy their product. What does an ugly underarm even look like?”

Unilever says it will donate to charity the space where the billboard was supposed be.

Nigella makeup free on cover of Vogue

After a year that cruelly laid bare her personal troubles, Nigella Lawson has chosen to expose even more of herself.
A make-up free Nigella on the cover of Vogue.

A make-up free Nigella on the cover of Vogue.

The 52-year-old domestic goddess appears on the cover of this month’s British Vogue magazine wearing practically no makeup.

In a jade green lace Burberry Prorsum dress that compliments her pale skin and dark features, the domestic goddess looks out from the cover directly and unflinchingly.

Her world seemed to unravel last year after her then husband Charles Saatchi was seen clutching her throat in a London restaurant and was followed by a very public and acrimonious divorce. Later, a court case in which two personal assistants were accused of fleecing Lawson and Saatchi of £685,000 exposed her use of cocaine and cannabis.

But the Vogue cover appears to be a public relations signal that Nigella is making a “fresh start” and looking towards the future.

“I was terrified of being photographed without make-up,” Lawson says in the piece, “and I hate having my looks talked up.  It always makes me feel I’m going to be a disappointment in the flesh.”

The magazine has stated that she is wearing a dab of blusher and a coat of mascara on her lashes. The image has also benefitted from a “little retouching, as we do with all cover images. Oddly given that she is a woman in her fifties, less than some people decades younger”.

Lawson’s future plans include a new venture into the world of digital. “I’ve been working – in a cottage-industry way – on an app, which, if it works, could be deeply thrilling.”

“I love what I do, but there are other parts of my brain that I haven’t flexed in a professional way,” Lawson told Vogue. “I do sometimes think that I’ve let the more analytical part of my brain slump slightly. I do like writing about food, but there’s so much that interests me …”

Pastor bans women from wearing underwear in his church

Photo: Planet Rudy via Getty Images

A pastor in Kenya has told his female parishioners not to wear underwear to church, in the latest bizarre command from a church leader to a congregation.

Women should remove their bras and underwear before coming to church, says Reverand Njohi, so that Christ can freely enter their bodies and spirit.

The Kenyan Daily Post has reported that the minister at the Lord’s Propeller Redemption Church describes underwear as “ungodly.” However the view does not appear to apply to men’s underwear, as the rule only applies to women.

More than being a recommendation to his parishioners, the pastor has moved to ban female underwear altogether, calling together a meeting with church officials to discuss the proposal.

It is not the first crazy creed that a church minister has told his congregation.

The same minister has previously warned his female congregants against wearing turtlenecks.

In January, it was revealed that a South African pastor was making his parishioners eat grass in order to ‘be closer to God’.

Pastors at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Nigeria mandated a dress code that prohibited women from wearing gold trinkets, artificial hair, trousers or short skirts and also banned men and women from colouring or bleaching their hair.

In the US, a Texas pastor also told women not to wear hair extensions and it was reported that a Mississippi pastor banned fried chicken at church events. While this measure was motivated by an anti-obesity campaign, Dr. Michael Minor told local media “Fried chicken has mysterious powers” and it’s difficult for most people to eat just one piece.
