Roger Federer expecting another set of twins

Roger Federer and wife Mirka expecting twins, AGAIN!
Roger Federer and wife, Mirka.

Tennis ace Roger Federer and his wife Mirka are reportedly preparing to welcome their second set of twins in July.

The Swiss athlete revealed his partner was pregnant with their third child via Twitter in December last year but as it turns out the pair might actually be adding another duo to their quickly growing brood.

Mirka, a former tennis player herself, gave birth to identical twin girls, Myla and Charlene, in 2009 just three months after she and Roger wed.

Mirka Federer watches Roger play with her twin girls, Myla and Charlene.

Roger, who currently ranks eighth in the world, has previously expressed that he holds the superstition that pregnancy brings good luck and said he played well last time Mirka was carrying their twins. So will the dual pregnancy bring any extra luck to Roger’s 2014 season?

After a disappointing 2013 Grand Slam campaign, where the Fed failed to hold up a winner’s trophy, he has started the 2014 season strong. Even though he has dropped two places in the current rankings, his performances so far have showed promise.

So before Mirka gives birth toward the middle of the year perhaps Rodger can get a few big wins in to show the bubs when they’re born.

Cowan gets life for Morcombe murder

Daniel Morcombe

Daniel Morcombe

Brett Peter Cowan has been sentenced to life in jail for the murder of Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe.

Justice Roslyn Atkinson handed down the sentence in the Queensland Supreme Court at 1.10pm today. She also sentenced him to three-and-a-half years for indecently dealing with a child and two years for interfering with a corpse, to be served concurrently. Cowan will be eligible for parole in 20 years.

“You were in your own words and opportunistic offender,” Justice Atkinson said. “You didn’t look like a monster, you didn’t look like a paedophile. You looked like an ordinary person.

“Everything you did to that boy was horrific and disgraceful. This is not just a murder, but a terrible murder. It has had widespread and shocking impacts, primarily on his parents and his two brothers, particularly his twin brother. But you gave no thought to them.

“I’ve seen no evidence in the months you’ve been in this court that you ever felt any remorse for what you did. These are chilling and disgraceful crimes. You have tragically and pointlessly snuffed out a young life.

“For the offence of murder the only sentence available is life imprisonment. It is appropriate to set non-parole period of 20 years. Not to say I’m of the view you should be released after 20 years.”

Daniel’s parents, Denise and Bruce Morcombe, were not in court for the sentencing.

A 12-person jury found Cowan, a 44-year-old father of three, guilty yesterday afternoon after seven hours and 25 minutes of deliberation.

Daniel Morcombe – known Australia-wide as the sweet boy with the cheeky smile and the bright red T-shirt – disappeared from a bus stop on the Kiel Mountain Road on 7 December 2003. He’d been going to buy Christmas presents for his family.

His disappearance – and the stoic determination of his parents to find out what happened to him – has galvanised Queenslanders for a decade.

It took eight years and an enormous commitment of both staff and resources, but Queensland detectives, working closely with WA police, were finally able to get Cowan to confess to Daniel’s murder by disguising themselves as stand-over men, loan sharks, and brothel madams.

Together, they managed to convince Cowan that they were all members of the same criminal gang.

In 2011, they invited Cowan to join their fake criminal enterprise, and paid him small amounts of money to stand over prostitutes (who were in fact undercover officers) and to pay fake bribes to fake customs officers.

After several months, they invited him to take part in a major operation worth $100,000 but said they were worried about how closely police were watching him, because Cowan – a known pedophile – had long been a suspect in Daniel’s disappearance.

They promised to buy Cowan an alibi and help him clean up whatever remained of the crime scene, so other members of the fake gang wouldn’t feel the “heat” from having him around.

Cowan confessed that he’d snapped Daniel’s neck after picking him up from the bus stop, and offering to drive him to a local shopping centre.

In the taped confession, he said he wanted to molest Daniel, not kill him, but panicked when Daniel tried to flee. He then dragged Daniel’s body into the bush, where he covered it up with branches and leaves.

Police were able to use the information that Cowan provided to locate the remains of Daniel’s body – just 17 bone fragments – and his Globe skate shoes, and a pair of Bonds underpants.

Cowan was subsequently charged with murder.

His defence argued that he’d made up the confession because he badly wanted to be part of the crime gang.

Cowan’s defence barrister Angus Edwards tried to argue that another convicted child sex offender Douglas Jackway, was to blame for Daniel’s death, and that Jackway may have told other criminals where he’d placed Daniel’s body, and that those criminals may have passed details onto Cowan.

The jury didn’t buy it.

Crown prosecutor Michael Byrne QC that Cowan led undercover police to Daniel’s remains.

“He knew where these things were because he is the one who killed Daniel Morcombe,” Mr Byrne said.

Cowan didn’t testify in his own defence. He changed his name to Shaddo N-unyah Hunter after becoming a suspect in Daniel’s murder and was living in WA at the time of the police sting.

Cowan was charged in 2011. It has taken more than two years for the case to come to court.

‘Fit Mom’ launches weight loss website

Controversial "Fit Mom" Maria Kang has launched a new weight loss website aimed at the very working mothers who have accused her of "fat shaming".
Maria Kang

Kang announced her new venture – NoExcuseMom.com – with a provocative image of herself on her Facebook page.

The strategically lit and heavily retouched image uses arrows to tag phrases like “Works 8hr+ days”, “limited sleep”, “gave birth to sons” and “no nanny or chef” – evidently things Kang thinks other mothers use as excuses not to look as good as she does.

Many of Kang’s detractors have commented on the image, calling her a fat-shamer who sends the message that if mothers aren’t sporting a similarly ripped physique to hers, they are failing their children by okaying obesity.

“What’s my excuse?” Christeen Leigh wrote. “I have five kids and I don’t have access to Photoshop!”

“I can still be healthy without being as fit as you are,” Taylor Oliver added. “And since women are constantly held to impossible standards in regards to their bodies, I just wish that your message was less accusatory and more celebratory to women.”

But Fit Mom does have a lot of inspired supporters too. Many of the comments are defending the fitness freak for her dedication to looking good.

“You women absolutely love to tear apart a woman who takes care of herself,” one fan wrote. “Here’s a thought – try actually exercising something other than your tired excuses and get moving!”

“I have NO sympathy for the haters,” Suresh Singaratnam added. “She’s posting this on HER page for people who signed up to see her posts on their timeline. She isn’t ‘fat-shaming’ anyone. She’s sending out motivation to a targeted audience.”

So far the image has had around 2,200 shares with close to 280,000 people liking her page.

The 33-year-old created a firestorm of attention in September 2013 when she posted a picture on her Facebook page showing off her toned abs with her three boys – aged three, two and eight months at the time – captioned: “What’s Your Excuse?”

When the internet erupted with chatter about the image Kang was polarising in her reaction.

“You can tell if someone is obese and that’s the word I am using here,” she said in an interview with ABC News last year. “Your body is not meant to carry this much weight. You can tell when they expose all their goodies to you they are not healthy. And can I just say I am tired of everyone posing in their lingerie?”

Magda Szubanski ‘shouldn’t be rewarded for getting fat’

Former footballer Matty Johns has launched a blistering attack on Magda Szubanski, saying she shouldn't be "rewarded" for "getting fat again".
Magda Szubanski.

Former footballer Matty Johns has launched a blistering attack on Magda Szubanski, saying she shouldn’t be “rewarded” for “getting fat again”.

Speaking on Triple M yesterday, Johns criticised Jenny Craig’s decision to pay Magda a rumoured $1.2 million to slim down again after she regained the weight she lost during her 2009 stint as ambassador for the company.

“If you want to pay people to lose weight, I can fully understand that because it’s an example to other people of ‘this is what you can do’,” Johns said.

“But once you’ve lost the weight, and then you put the weight back on, should you be paid money again to get it back off again?

“It sounds to me like it is rewarding people for being fat, and getting fat again. To me, fat appears like an industry itself.”

Triple M’s Gus Worland, Matty Johns and Matt Geyer.

Johns’ co-host Gus Worland, who claimed he himself is 40kg overweight, disagreed, arguing that Magda was a huge inspiration for people struggling with their weight.

“The reality is that you do lose the weight and put it back on again,” he said. “It is yo-yo central.

“It’s what everyone else out there is battling to do because you do put the weight back on again so to have someone like her out there doing it is a great example of what you can do.”

New weight loss fad: The urban sweat lodge

Demi Moore, Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian are fans of the Shape House's sweat lodge.

Demi Moore and the newly svelte Kardashians swear by it, but does heating up really work?

There’s a new way to lose weight in Hollywood – by literally sweating that fat away. With star-power support, the modern-day sweat lodge is gaining popularity.

The reason it’s becoming the latest craze is probaby due to the fact you don’t really have to do anything except lay back and try to relax while covered in an extremely hot electric blanket that raises your body temperature to about 70-75 degrees. The process promises to burn around 1000 calories per one-hour session.

It’s reported that 51-year-old Demi Moore is a big fan and the procedure was even taped during an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, as Kris and Khloe gave it a go.

Founder of the Shape House in LA, which offers the treatment, Sophie Chiche says the process tricks the body into thinking it has a fever.

“So as the temperture goes up, up, up, the body tries to go down, down, down. This requires a lot of energy,” she says.

Sophie says the sweating has a detoxifying effect on the body. But nutritionist, Dr Marilyn Glenville, says heating the body up to such a degree could cause complications in people that had heart problems, high blood pressure, were menstruating or pregnant.

“But my biggest concern is that if people are using it for weight loss, it is not changing any of the unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as eating unhealthy foods and not exercising,” she says.

“So people are looking at it as a quick fix.”

Would you give the urban sweat lodge a try?
