Margie Abbott and Pink Hope founder Krystal Barter.

Margie Abbott has made a rare, solo public appearance to launch a new book by courageous Pink Hope founder, Krystal Barter.

Mrs Abbott, who wore pink for the event, said she had been inspired by Ms Barter’s courage in having both breasts removed as a preventative measure, after discovering she carried the gene for breast cancer.

Mrs Abbott said the book was called The Lucky One because it reflects the fact that Krystal felt lucky to be able to have preventative treatment.

“She took this brave step to give herself and her family a chance to beat the curse of breast cancer,” Mrs Abbott said.

Krystal’s mum, grandma and her great-grandmother were all diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, and Krystal carries the gene.

She underwent a double mastectomy at the age of 25, to radically reduce the chances that she, too, would develop the disease.

“She has emerged from the shadow of cancer, to become a young mum who has become a shining light to thousands of women and their families,” Mrs Abbott said.

“Now she has chosen to share her story, and to create this wonderful charity, Pink Hope, so others do not have to feel alone as they battle the disease.”

Ms Barter told the launch that she was grateful to carry her mother’s genes “because it means that I’m your daughter”.

She said Angelina Jolie, who also had both breasts removed as a preventative measure, had given preventative treatments “a global platform, and Pink Hope will rise and shine every day, to spread this message”.

Ms Barter’s decision to become to the first woman in her family to have preventative treatment meant that she was also the first in four generations not to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I chose prevention as a cure,” she said.

The event was hosted by The Today Show’s Karl Stefanovic, who revealed Mrs Abbott had once caught him trying to cheat at a trivia night, and she only had to look at him to make him feel guilty.

“She just needs to look at you and you know you’ve done the wrong thing and you want to make it right,” he said.

Kelly Osbourne didn’t think she’d live the last 10 years

Growing up in the public eye, Kelly Osbourne has transformed from punk-brat to classic elegance, albeit with lavender-coloured hair.
Kelly Osbourne

Born into rock royalty and a former wild child herself, Kelly Osbourne has “had a mad life”, in her own words.

“I can’t believe it when I think about my life ten years ago and what it is like now. I didn’t even think I’d still be alive…” she has told The Daily Mail.

The daughter of Black Sabbath front man Ozzy Osbourne and music-manager-turned X Factor judge Sharon says “as a child [the heavy-metal band] Mötley Crüe used to babysit me.”

Overcoming addictions that landed her in rehab four times and family crises like her mother’s diagnosis of colon cancer and her father’s relapse with drugs and alcohol, the 29-year-old has grown up in the public eye.

Over that time her style and sensitivities have evolved. She considers her family the most important thing. And her dress-sense has gone from punk-brat to “classic” elegance, albeit with the unconventional hair-colour of lavender.

Quentin Bryce: Australia, it has been an honour

During her five-and-a-half years as Governor-General, Quentin Bryce has met thousands of Australians, travelled to dozens of countries, and played host to scores of foreign dignitaries and today marks her final day occupying the nation’s highest post.

This morning during his final visit to see the governor-general at her official residence of Yarralumla, Prime Minister Tony Abbott praised Ms Bryce as a “gracious and warm presence”.

“I think Australians will be very happy to see Peter Cosgrove come to Yarralumla; I think they’ll be sad to see Quentin Bryce leave Yarralumla,” he told the Governor-General.

Ms Bryce, 71, is the first female to hold the office, says that she has found her years of service inspirational.

“It has truly been an honour to serve our community as governor-general,” she said.

“I’ve been utterly inspired by the experiences, they certainly have changed me in many ways and I’ve been inspired by what I have learned, what I have observed from my fellow Australians.

When Bryce first took up the post in 2008 she swore to “honour” the position and her exhausting efforts to stay true to her word leave no room for any detractors to say otherwise.

Apart from her official obligations in the nation’s capital cities, Bryce spent much of her time trekking to the most remote parts of the country to meet ordinary people.

She will be honoured at a farewell reception at Parliament House tonight.

Craig Thomson sentenced to three months in jail

Craig Thomson outside Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

Craig Thomson outside Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

Craig Thomson will spend just three months in prison for defrauding the Health Services Union of more than $24,000.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg sentenced the former member for Dobell to one year in jail but ruled that would include nine months suspended prison time, meaning Thomson would spend just three months in custody.

But Thomson is unlikely to start his sentence any time soon, if at all – his legal team announced they would appeal the ruling immediately. Thomson will attend a bail hearing this afternoon and will likely be released from custody until the appeal has been decided.

Rozencwajg said he was in “no doubt” imprisonment was the only appropriate sentence for Thomson, declaring his crimes to be “a breach of trust in the highest order”.

He also ordered Thomson to pay $24,538.42 to the HSU in compensation and put him on a two-year good behaviour bond.

Thomson was last month found guilty of misusing his union credit cards to pay for prostitutes, hotel stays, cigarettes and travel for his then-wife, between 2002 and 2008 when he was the HSU’s national secretary.

Thomson could have faced up to five years in jail. His legal team argued his public humiliation had been punishment enough, while the prosecution wanted the maximum sentence, claiming Thomson had repeatedly lied and shown no remorse.

MH370: There are no survivors

Malaysia Airlines has come under fire again overnight after it sent a text message to the families of those missing on flight MH370 “confirming” there were no survivors.

Prior to a press conference given by the Malaysian Prime Minister, some of the relatives of those on board had been briefed in person but others read the news they feared most in a text message sent by Malaysia Airlines.

In a swift few sentences the message confirmed that the search for any survivors was now over and authorities had concluded that their loved ones had certainly perished.

“Malaysia Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived,” said the SMS. “As you will hear in the next hour from Malaysia’s Prime Minister, we must now accept all evidence suggests the plane went down in the Southern Indian Ocean.”

While some have been outraged at the seemingly callous delivery of sensitive information, the airline has released a statement to explain its actions.

“Malaysia Airlines did not ONLY send an SMS. The message was conveyed to all families face to face by our top management at the hotels,” read the statement. “SMS and phone calls were made to those who are not in hotels via our family support centre. We wanted to ensure that all families are informed via all channels.”

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak leaving the late-night news conference held in Kuala Lumpur overnight.

The heartbreaking text message was followed shortly by an announcement by the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in a late-night news conference held in Kuala Lumpur, 17 days after it mysteriously disappeared.

The Malaysian PM confirmed that officials now believed Flight MH370 “ended” in the Indian Ocean, without any survivors.

Flight MH370 departed Kuala Lumpur in the early morning of March 8 but failed to arrive at its final destination in Beijing and is now believed to have went down in the Southern Indian Ocean, somewhere around 2500km southwest of Perth.

The crash conclusion comes from new analysis information by British satellite firm Inmarsat, which provided satellite data, and the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

Inmarsat and the AAIB “concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth,” Mr Razak said.

None of the Boeing 777’s 227 passengers and 12 crew on board are believed to have survived the flight as the determined final location is too far from any possible landing site.

A confusing relay of information has plagued the investigation into what happened to the Malaysian Airlines flight and some family members are unsurprisingly angry with the authorities.

Some of the families gathered together in Beijing to accuse the Malaysian Airlines and military of “delaying” and “deceiving” the public and “wasting a large quantity of human resources and materials and lost valuable time for the rescue effort”.

Even since the announcement speculative theories still continue to circle around the missing plane. With no wreckage, no official justification as to why the flight’s transponders were shut off, and no explanation why the plane changed course and ended up thousands of miles from its destination it may be a long time before the families get any real answers.

Malaysia says flight MH370 crashed at sea

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has made the sombre announcement that flight MH370 crashed into the southern Indian Ocean.

New satellite images and analysis of the flight path placed the plane’s final position in remote waters off Australia’s west coast.

“It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean,” Prime Minister Razak said on Monday night.

The tragic announcement ends 17 days of agonising uncertainty for relatives of those on board the flight, which disappeared on March 8 during an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Prime Minister Razak said Malaysian airlines had spoken to the families of the passengers and crew aboard the ill-fated flight.

“For them, the past few weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still.”

The airline sent a statement via text message to the families of those on board the flight saying “we have to assume” flight MH370 was lost.

“Malaysian Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived,” the statement said.

“As you will hear in the next hour from Malaysia’s Prime Minister, we must now accept all evidence suggests the plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean.

“Our prayers go out to all the loved ones of the 226 passengers and of our 13 friends and colleagues at this enormously painful time. We know there are no words that we or anyone else can say which can ease your pain.”

Miranda Kerr-ching!

The supermodel is flying high after racking up endorsement deals including signing on as the new face of Escada's fragrance, Joyful.
Miranda Kerr

Supermodel Miranda Kerr is riding on the sweet smell of success with her latest endorsement deal as the face of Escada fragrance Joyful.

It’s the latest in a seemingly unending series of lucrative marketing partnerships for the 30-year-old Australian beauty this year, ranging from shampoo and crockery to sneakers, push-up bras and clothing stores.

In announcing the new deal, Miranda described how she felt Escada “has a lot of synergy with my personal outlook” because of its association with positivity and confidence.

She also reminisced about memories of playing with her mother’s perfumes as a child in another interview to promote the fragrance (however, Therese Kerr told The Australian Women’s Weekly in a recent interview that she stopped using all synthetically perfumed cosmetics after developing cancer in 2001 because of health concerns over chemical ingredients).

It’s certainly been a busy start to 2014 for Miranda, who appears to be capitalising on her enduring appeal and popularity by signing endorsement deals with high street fashion retailer H&M, Reebok, ShopStyle, Wonderbra, Calvin Klein, Clear Hair & Scalp and Royal Albert.

The genetically-blessed model from Gunnedah paints a happy image of her life, saying she and ex-husband Orlando Bloom remain on good terms and regularly posting smiling photos of herself or sends messages of gratitude on social media.

As well as being mother to three-year-old son Flynn, US-based Miranda has her own brand of skincare, Kora Organics.

Miranda is all smiles in her new campaign for Joyful, by Escada.

KORA Organics is Kerr’s baby, other than 3-year-old Flynn, of course.

The supermodel has been the face of retail giant H&M this past year.

Kerr has been keen to share snaps of her H&M campaigns ahead of the brands Australia launch.

Another H&M selfie from the supermodel.

Kerr has been fronting online retailer ShopStyle.

The supermodel looks elegant and chic in ShopStyle’s latest posters.

Like all of her other endorsements, the model plugged her Clear Scalp and Hair commercial on her Instagram.

Branching out into homewares the model has created a line of crockery for Royal Albert which will be available in the UK, US, Japan, Thailand and Australia.

After giving up her wings as a Victoria Secret angel, the model has signed on with Wonderbra.

The model took this cheeky selfie to give a shout out to underwear label, Calvin Klein.
