Oscar Pistorius apologises to family

Oscar Pistorius outside the Pretoria High Court.

Pistorius, a South African paralympian known as the Bladerunner for his prosthetic legs, fought back a stream of tears to stammer out an apology to Steenkamp’s mother, June, who watched him stern-faced from the public gallery.

“Since this tragedy happened I’ve been having thoughts about your family, I wake up every morning and you’re the first people I think of, the first people I pray for,” the 27-year-old told the packed courtroom.

“I can’t imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness I’ve caused you and your family. I was simply trying to protect Reeva.

“I promise that when she went to bed that night, she felt loved.”

Pistorius also said that he was scared to go to sleep and that when he did his nightmares woke him, the smell of blood still in his nostrils. “I wake up and I can smell blood and I wake up to being terrified,” he said. “I wake up just in a complete state of terror to a point that I would rather not sleep than fall asleep and wake up like that.”

Pistorius admits shooting Steenkamp, who died in a hail of bullets when she was shot through the door of the couple’s bathroom, but says he believed she was an intruder.

In earlier testimony, a forensic pathologist Mr Jannie Botha opened Pistorius’ defence telling the court that the first shot hit Steenkamp’s hip, the second hit her arm, then bullets hit her hand and head. He said she probably bending from the waist and possibly getting up from the toilet when the first shot hit her.

Pistorius was shaken during the testimony, vomiting occasionally into a bucket as he did on a previous occasion when details of Steenkamp’s death were presented to the court.

Is it just us, or is the cutest royal of them all, Prince George, the spitting image of his father?

And it appears the little Prince, who is celebrating his first birthday on July 22, doesn’t just share the same looks as his dad.

William recently revealed that George is set to take after his sporty parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

“I think George will be running faster than me very soon,” the prince told head teacher Gill Naylor at a recent school sporting event.

Mavis Jarvis, 74, who also spoke to Prince William at the event, said he called his son “lovely” before explaining that George is moving about the palace quite quickly.

“He said George is charging around and opens doors,” Jarvis said.

Check out our pictures which show George’s striking resemblance to his proud dad here!

At eight months, Prince George looks almost identical to Prince William when he was of similar age.

Like father like son: Prince George looks exactly like baby Prince William at his christening.

Can you spot the difference? Prince George is the spitting image of his father, Prince William, when he toured Australia with his parents, in 1983.

Still not sure who the prince most resembles? Maybe this photo will help.

They even share the same facial expressions.

Little Prince George is a similar age to Prince William when he made his first trip Down Under with his parents, Prince Charles and the late Diana.

Royal staffers disembark the aircraft as they touch down with the Cambridge’s in New Zealand.

As she disembarked the Royal New Zealand Air Force jet, the nanny was in the company of other royal staff including the family’s advisor, Sir David Manning; Williams’s private secretary, Miguel Head; Kate’s private secretary, Rebecca Deacon; as well as the Duchess’s private hairdresser, Amanda Cook Tucker.

Kate Middleton cradles Prince George as she steps off the plane in New Zealand with Prince William.

Kate and William are known in private circles for being very hands on parents and in the past have looked to the duchess’s mother, Carole Middleton and William’s childhood nanny, Jessie Webb for extra help.

Peaches Geldof dead at age 25

Peaches Geldof

Peaches was found dead by ambulance officers at an address near Wrotham, Kent, south-east of London.

According to BBC News, her death is currently being treated as “unexplained and sudden”.

The television presenter, writer and model, leaves behind her husband, Tom Cohen, and their two sons.

“Peaches has died. We are beyond pain,” her father said in a statement. “She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us. Writing ‘was’ destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable?”

Peaches posted a picture on Instagram on Sunday. It was of her, as a baby, in her mother, Paula’s arms.

The caption read: “Me and my mum.”

The 25-year-old told Elle last year that she struggled to come to terms with her mother’s death to a heroin overdose in 2000.

Alessandra dazzles for Alex Perry

Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio signed on to be Alex Perry’s secret weapon at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Alex Perry had a little help of an angel – a Victoria Secret angel that is – to dazzle the crowd at his Spring Summer 2014/2015 MBFWA runway show earlier today.

Alessandra Ambrosio flew into Sydney to lead the model charge and open Perry’s ‘Varsity’ show.

As the 33-year-old supermodel stormed the stage in a youthful midriff baring outfit it was clear that the collection was a celebration of young shapes in the form of structured and short trumpet skirts and crop tops.

Sheer and shimmering fabrics dominated the collection, as well as figure hugging pencil skirts and a mixture of high and low necklines.

But an Alex Perry show would be almost incomplete without a gown. The designer went for body-clinging shapes in light fabrics that swept the floor and moved with an enchanted energy as the models strutted down the runway.

Perry certainly didn’t disappoint and set the style bar high for the rest of the fashionable fold who still have collections to show this week.

Alessandra Ambrosio opened and closed the show.

Crop tops and trumpet skirts embodied the ‘Varsity’ theme.

Spaghetti straps and low cut necklines were common throughout the show.

This dusty pink number was one of the standout feminine pieces of the collection.

This bright citrus piece was a welcomed pop of colour.

Although feminine some looks flirted with an androgynous edge.

Accessories were kept to a minimum but these gloves were an eye-catching addition.

As the front rows eyes flickered from the fashion to the floor they would have noticed the chic lace-up booties worn by the models as they marched intensely down the style strip.

Black and white will no doubt be a common collaboration in most of the collections to come.

Figure hugging shapes clung to the slight frames of the models.

Structured lace creations were a highlight.

Perry went for sleek and minimal for his signature gowns.

Delicate and sexy is a tough note to hit but Perry knocked it out of the park with this gorgeous creation.

Perry showed this floor length dress with a dark edgy twist.

Thigh-high splits are so on trend and are going to be a predicted inclusion in many collections.

This one-shouldered black and white gown was a sexy addition to a stellar collection.

Bob Carr defends tell-all book

Bob Carr.

Speaking on ABC-TV’s Insiders program yesterday, Julie Bishop criticised Carr for producing a book that she says may undermine relations with Australia’s regional and strategic neighbours.

“If they knew that Bob Carr was surreptitiously keeping notes and he’s going to write a self-serving account of the conversation from his point of view, well, they might have chosen their words differently. They might have done things differently,” Ms Bishop said.

“I think it’s unfortunate. From what I’ve heard, he will be breaching confidences. Not just what he had for lunch with the director of the CIA, but more detail than that.”

Mr Carr today defended the book, to be published later this week, telling ABC radio that it would help educate Australians about the way this country deals with foreign governments.

“I pointed out to her when [Ms Bishop] phoned me on Saturday, that every US Secretary of State has written a memoir,” Mr Carr said. “I think the Australian people are entitled to know how foreign policy is made, how it’s fought over, the advice that comes up from a department, the discussions in a cabinet room, the relationship between a foreign minister and his colleagues. The Australian people are entitled to know these things.”
