Prince William and Kate Middleton sparkle in Sydney sunshine

In her most fashion-forward dress yet, a yellow sheath with panels of white, the Duchess of Cambridge gave Sydneysiders a rather special introduction to the Cambridge family's royal tour.
Prince William and Kate Middleotn on Sydney Harbour

Perhaps it was the glorious Sydney sunshine, or the unfailing beauty of the Opera House bobbing on the harbour, but there was definitely a unique shimmer of stardust around the royal couple today.

Catherine came down the airplane steps at Kingsford Smith cradling baby Prince George who wore a traditional romper suit with smocking and Peter Pan collar that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Downton Abbey and will no doubt already be sold out. George like his mum is already a fashion force.

But unlike in New Zealand, where at the start of the visit it was all about gorgeous George, it was Catherine and William who dominated the limelight today.

Thousands were packed onto the Opera House Forecourt all desperate to catch a glimpse of the royal duo.

William and Kate with Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and his wife Lynn.

George seemed delighted by this giant wombat toy.

When they arrived there was screaming and whoops of joy and while the public got their glimpse and a lucky few managed to speak to the couple as they embarked on a couple of short walkabouts on arrival and departure, many more wanted to  a handshake and missed out.

I was in the press pen in the heart of the crowds and, like the public, would have liked the couple to have stayed a bit longer.

Nevertheless that magical something that compels us all to follow the royals and especially take this new young family to our hearts was very much in evidence. Prince William looked rather chuffed at the turn out, no doubt pleased to introduce this country which his family has enjoyed visiting so much to his wife and son. And Catherine was impeccable in poise, elegance and warmth.

In his speech at the reception for 400 that had taken place behind closed doors inside the Opera House, hosted by NSW Governor Marie Bashir, Prince William said: “Her Majesty spoke recently of how, since her first visit here sixty years ago, she has been privileged to witness Australia’s growing economy and flowering self-confidence.  “For Catherine, Harry and me, born in the early 80s, we’ve never known anything else – Australia and Australians have always been for us a beacon of confidence, creativity in the arts and sporting ability.”

He added “We really look forward to our time here together as a family,” And joked “I suspect George’s first word might be ‘bilby’ – only because ‘koala’ is harder to say.”

It was an impressive start and one that will have certainly won the couple even more fans here in Australia. “I know that a truly unforgettable few days lie ahead,” William finished … And I think he’s probably right.

William remembers Diana in first Australian speech

Britain’s future king, Prince William, has remembered his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, during a speech at the Sydney Opera House.

The second in line to the throne spoke briefly of his mother’s “deep affection” for Australia when addressing a crowd of about 400 special guests, at a reception inside the iconic venue.

“My mother’s deep affection for Australia – which you were so kind to reciprocate – needs no reminder,” he said

William joined his parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their Royal Tour Down Under in 1983, when he was a similar age to his own son Prince George, who has come along with Wills and wife Catherine on their three-week Antipodean tour. William later visited Australia again as an adult in 2010.

William said they were really looking forward to their time here together as a family.

“This visit to Australia has been one that Catherine and I have been looking forward to for a long time.

“Australia is an inspiring place, as this amazing Opera House shows so vividly, and I know that a truly unforgettable few days lie ahead.”

Cameron Diaz says having “lots of lovers” is best

A candid Cameron Diaz has said having “lots of lovers” is better than trying to stick with one man.
Cameron Diaz

It seems one man may not be enough to satisfy Cameron Diaz.

The 41-year-old star of The Other Woman – a film about fidelity – confessed in an interview that lifelong monogamy may be too tall an order for most.

In an interview with the UK’s Mirror the actress was asked if having lots of partners was better and the single star answered “Why not? Why would that be so bad?”

As the author of The Body Book – a New York Times Bestseller- Diaz explained that romantic relationships are destined to struggle because women put too much pressure on one person to meet all off their life needs.

“We can have all of these girlfriends, all of these friendships,” Diaz told the Mirror. “I know with my girlfriends I do totally different things with each one of them. There are different commonalities in each one of them and when I want to do those certain things, I can go to that girlfriend and we do those things together.”

“For some reason, we get into relationships and we expect one man to understand ‘all’ the parts of us and meet all of those needs. I think that’s where everything fails,” she said.

In the past Diaz has confessed that she believes that no one is “really naturally monogamous.”

“We all have the same instincts as animals,” she told the May issue of InStyle. “But we live in a society where it’s been ingrained in us to do these things.”

And the star, who counts Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto and baseball player Alex Rodriguez among her exes, says she’s realised no one person can fulfill her every need and she’s not the only one.

From whispers about Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin to scintillating rumours about Angelina and Brad Pitt it seems in Tinseltown many stars are opting for open relationships.

Cameron Diaz isn’t hung up on an orthodox relationship style.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s 10-year marriage was reportedly an open relationship. Could that be the reason for them becoming ‘consciously uncoupled’?

Angelina Jolie, 38, told Germany’s Das Neue Blatt magazine in 2011 that she and partner Brad Pitt have no restrictions on their relationship. “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship,” she said. “It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.”

An unconventional Tilda Swinton obviously thinks three is company. The 53-year-old is rumoured to still be sharing a home with partner John Byrne – the father of her twins – and her younger lover, Sandro Kopp.

Will Smith sent tongues wagging about the role of monogamy in his marriage to actress, Jada Pinkett Smith. In 2008, the Men In Black star told British tabloid Now that he and Jada were liberal in their views on martial restriction. “Our perspective is you don’t avoid what’s natural, and you’re going to be attracted to people,” he said. “If it came down to it, then one would say to the other, ‘Look, I need to have sex with somebody. Now, I’m not going to do it if you don’t approve of it.”

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s eight-year-marriage was marred with whispers of infidelity and the couples holistic lifestyle stirred speculation of an open marriage. The pair never spoke publicly about the rumours, but they officially split last year.

It’s a rare sight to see country music star Dolly Parton with her long-time husband of nearly 50 years, Carl Dean which has prompted many to wonder what kind of relationship the pair have. Parton caused a stir when she told the Daily Mail about the benefits of extramarital sex, including, “I don’t want to know it if he’s cheating on me. If I’m cheating on him, he wouldn’t want to know it.”

Charlie Sheen has found a whole new generation of fans with his highly publicised non-monogamous domestic situation. Sheen’s many girlfriends, or “goddesses” as he called them, are mostly made up of young wannabe starlets.

Singer Robin Thicke married his childhood sweetheart Paula Paton but that didn’t stop the media from speculating that the marriage wasn’t squeaky clean. The singer hinted at an open relationship to Howard Stern after answering bashfully to a question about he and his wife having threesomes. “Out of respect for her, we just won’t answer that one,” he said before smiling.
