Kate Middleton thanks Australia for ‘warm welcome’

The Duchess of Cambridge has thanked Australians for their "incredibly warm" welcome on her first visit Down Under.
Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Cambridge at the Royal Easter Show.

In her first and only speech of the tour, Kate said she was thrilled by how she and Prince George had been received by the public.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has welcomed me and George so incredibly warmly on our first visit,” Kate said.

“To be here together as a family has been very special and we will always remember it with fond and happy memories. Thank you for inviting us here and for such a generous welcome.”

Kate made the speech during her visit to Bear Cottage, a children’s hospice in Manly. William and Kate met patients of the facility as well as the bereaved families of former patients.

“It really is wonderful to be here today – having the chance to meet you all and to see the incredible work of Bear Cottage,” Kate said. “First class delivery of children’s palliative care is life changing.

“When families are confronted with the shattering news that their children have a life limiting condition, their world can fall apart. It is at those times that professional support is imperative.

“The haven that you have created here is inspirational, and there is so much that you can share with each other as you continue to support and nurture those in your care.”

The royal couple’s visit to Bear cottage began about 3pm after they arrived to cheers and hoots from the big crowd along Fairy Bower road.

After meeting Mr Abbott and his wife Margie out the front of the centre, the royal couple were escorted inside to the playroom where they split up, with the duchess mingling with kids, while the duke spoke privately with families.

“Very nice to meet you, Daniel,” Kate said on meeting Daniel Howarth, 16, who suffers from lung disease and had a Union Jack flag strapped to his wheelchair.

From the playroom, she made a brief visit to the centre’s quiet room then ventured outside to the garden to take part in a music therapy class with sick children and their families.

The Duchess sat on a wooden garden bench and played a drum with the children, and also took part in a rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, before the duke joined her to meet with families.

From the garden, the royal couple took part in an informal afternoon tea where they were presented with an artwork painted by Bear Cottage kids.

Sophie Martyr, 16, was still shaking after making the presentation to the royal pair.

“It was amazing, it was unforgettable,” she said. “They’re really personable, they’re really genuine.”

On his way out, Mr Abbott said it was a “fabulous afternoon for Bear Cottage”.

“These are magnificent people here. There are some very special and brave kids here,” Mr Abbott said.

“To get this visit from Prince William and the Duchess is just extraordinary.”

Before getting in the royal motorcade, Kate thrilled the crowd by meeting a number of fans and receiving flowers and a toy footy.

Prince William reportedly told Kate her yellow Roksanda Ilincic dress made her look like a “banana” – now the Duchess has got her own back.

As the couple were touring the displays at the Royal Easter Show this morning, Kate seized the opportunity to tease her husband about his famously thinning hair, joking that he could use some of the alpaca fleece they were inspecting to make a toupee.

“The princess said (the Duke) should put some on his head,” said Lyn Cregan, 67, from Glen Innes.

“She pointed at him and said ‘You need it more than me.’ He laughed.”

William and Kate spent more than an hour at the show before travelling to Bear Cottage children’s hospice in Manly.

Later today they will visit Manly Beach.

Kate Middleton pokes fun at Prince William’s bald spot

Teasing Prince William about his hair, or lack there of, is usually Prince Harry's job, but Kate was more than happy to step in today, ribbing her husband during their visit to the Royal Easter Show.

As the couple were inspecting some prize-winning alpaca fleece in the Fresh Food Dome, Kate commented that perhaps William could use some to make himself a toupee.

“The princess said (the Duke) should put some on his head,” said Lyn Cregan, 67, from Glen Innes.

“She pointed at him and said ‘You need it more than me.’ He laughed.”

The royal couple also took time to get up close and person with Fred the ram, who had been taught to bow for the occasion.

Fred’s owner, Jim Murray, from Wellington, said the couple were “absolutely lovely” and very interested in the wool industry.

“They fed Fred a piece of apple and were very impressed with his size and stature and how soft his muzzle was,” he said.

Mr Murray met Prince Charles in Tasmania last year. Wool from Fred’s Merino fleece went into a suit that was presented to the Duke on the occasion of his wedding.

The Duke, who in March completed a 10-week course in agricultural management at the University of Cambridge, spoke to sheep shearers as they tackled two of 250 sheep that are sheared over the 14-day fair.

Jordan Allen and Giovanni Testini are so committed to their mission they donned a pair of Union Jack smugglers themselves and their stunt is certainly attracting attention.

“Budgie smugglers are an Aussie institution,” Giovanni tells me.

No doubt Tony Abbott who is greeting the couple on the beach today would agree.

The couple will see NSW Surf Lifesavers in action, although whether the Prime Minister, who is a member of Queenscliff Surf Lifesaving, will be demonstrating remains to be seen.

Duchess Kate followed in the fashionable footsteps of Aussie style queen Naomi Watts at the Royal Easter Show today, donning the same Zimmermann dress the actress has worn before.

Kate chose the Australian label’s cream lace Roamer Day Dress – which retails for $495 – from its upcoming Summer Swim 2014 collection.

The frock doesn’t hit stores until June but Naomi wore it last month for a recent ad campaign.

Kate paired the dress with a pair of sky-high tan wedges, looking absolutely stunning as she toured the craft and sheep pavilions at the annual show.

It’s a big day for Zimmermann, which is likely to see an massive increase in sales thanks to the royal seal of approval – indeed, within seconds of the Duchess stepping out in the frock, the label’s website had crashed.

Kate has a proven ability to sell fashion – the Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress she wore to the Blue Mountains yesterday sold out worldwide in just eight minutes.
