Following their morning at the RAAF Base, Kate and Wills attend a civic reception at the Brisbane Convention Centre with 200 exceptional Queenslanders, as well as the Queensland Governor, the Premier and other dignitaries.

Thousands line the streets of Brisbane’s South Bank precinct hoping for a glimpse of the young Royal couple with the crowd in some places extending to 30-40 deep.

Despite a small group of protestors regarding Aboriginal land rights stationing themselves outside the Convention Centre, the mood is one of high anticipation as the Royal couple visit the Sunshine State for their first time.

Kate Middleton’s tears for terminally ill baby boy

The Duchess of Cambridge was left fighting back tears when she met a terminally-ill baby the same age as son George in Manly yesterday.

The Royal couple were introduced to Max McIntyre at Bear Cottage children’s hospice in Manly.

Max was born happy and healthy but contracted bacterial meningitis six weeks ago and now has just weeks to live.

“I welled up and was really worried I would start crying,” William said afterwards. “Once I started I wouldn’t I have stopped, so it took a great effort to control myself. He’s a similar age to George – it was extremely moving.”

Kate sung songs with Bear Cottage’s patients.

Max’s parents Amy and Rob McIntyre were thrilled to meet the Duke and Duchess but said the experience was “bittersweet” because they’d much rather have a healthy child.

“Kate and William were fighting back tears when we told them about Max,” Amy said. “They could totally see themselves in us, as both our sons were born around the same time.”

“Kate stroked Max’s leg and they were both very moved. They struggled to hold back tears-they were welling up.”

“Obviously it was lovely meeting them, and they are very charming and caring. But meeting them was obviously bitter sweet-we’d give anything not to be here.”

“Max has touched many hearts and he obviously touched them.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton make fan faint in Brisbane

William and Kate's arrival at RAAF Amberley this morning was too much for one troop, who fainted and had to be escorted away by medics.
Prince William and Kate Middleton arriving at RAAF Amberley

The couple were met by General David Hurley AC DSC, Chief of Defence Force and Mrs Linda Hurley and stood to attention on a red carpet – which the troops laid just 10 minutes earlier – while the military band played the final verses of ‘God Save The Queen’ then ‘Advance Australia Fair’.

Prince William stepped forward to inspect the Royal Guard of Honour. It was a scene of wonderful military pageantry which one young troop member found a bit too much having to be escorted away by medics when the sun proved too punishing.

The visit by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recognises the close relationships between the British RAF and the RAAF.

Next the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will no doubt enjoy experiencing a short flight in an F/A-18F Simulator, overseen by Officer Commanding of 82 Wing, Group Captain Micka Gray.

RAAF simulators are devices designed to re-create, as closely as possible, the actual conditions that personnel will experience in the air.

These simulators are complex, computer-driven machines, which accurately reflect the motion, sights and sounds perceived by a pilot in flight, in addition to replicating the cockpit and controls of the particular aircraft type.

Then later today the couple will hit downtown Brisbane for a reception and to greet the public who are already lining the South Bank.

Duchess Kate donned another stunning frock for day four of her Australian tour, this time choosing a royal blue floral number which, as usual, sold out worldwide within seconds.

The summery design is from the latest collection by LK Bennett, one of Kate’s favourite British labels.

The dress – the Lasa Poppy Print Dress – costs $440 and comes in blue or coral, both of which are now completely sold out.

Kate paired the dress with her favourite navy blue LK Bennett court shows and a bright blue clutch. She wore her hair in a demi-chignon, one of her favourite styles.

The Duchess’ fashion has been keenly observed throughout her tour, with almost everything she has worn selling out quickly – the supply of the Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress she wore to tour the Blue Mountains on Thursday, for example, was completely exhausted within eight minutes.

Kate is famous for her ability to move clothing and it appears her son Prince George is following in her footsteps. The Rachel Riley dungarees he wore last week in New Zealand sold out worldwide within hours after he was photographed in them.

Kate keeps heels on for beach frolic

Kate doing her best Baywatch impression in high heels on Manly Beach.

Her lady-in-waiting kicked off her heels and went barefoot but the Duchess of Cambridge refused to remove her sky-high wedges to walk on Manly Beach this afternoon.

Instead, the immaculately dressed royal kept her tan Russell and Bromley heels on, negotiating the pitted sand like a pro.

Despite the uneven surface, Kate never lost her balance during the 40-minute engagement, even when she broke into a run.

William and Kate were in Manly to celebrate the work of Surf Life Saving Clubs. They watched a demonstration of various races furiously contested by 96 nippers aged 12, 13, 14 and 15 from the Queenscliff, North Steyne and Manly Surf Life Saving Clubs.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and new NSW Premier Mike Baird accompanied the royal couple on their afternoon in the sun and thousands of people turned out to welcome them to Manly.

Earlier in the day, the couple visited Bear Cottage children’s hospice, where they chatted to sick kids and met with the bereaved families of the facility’s former patients.

They began the day with a trip to Sydney’s Royal Easter Show.

Will Prince George be a Manly nipper?

Prince William has promised to bring his son George back to Manly beach to use the rather amazing customised surfboard he and Catherine were given by Manly's mayor today.
Prince William and Kate Middleton with surfboard Manly Sydney

The bad news, they didn’t bring him to join in the wonderful surf carnival that took place on the beach today in honour of the royal couple.

Kara Blackley, 14, who was on the sand when the couple arrived spoke to the Duchess about Prince George’s absence.

“She said she wished she could have brought George as he would have loved it here, but he was asleep when they left.”

Accompanied by one of our most prominent surf lifesavers and a fervent royalist, Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Kate and Will were in their element today, welcomed with screams and cheers and a level of excitement I haven’t yet seen on the tour.

It was helped by a spectacular Good Friday on Sydney’s famous surf beach with waves crashing, the sky blue and the sun streaming down on the 12,000-strong crowd.

Three lads from North Steyne Surf Lifesaving Club, Jacob Wroughton,15, Andrew Carse, 14 and Kai Brandson, 14, were pumped with anticipation.

They were part of the 90-strong contingent of kids chosen to display their surf lifesaving prowess on the sand and in the water.

“I like Will best,” Andrew told me. “And George too. He’s cool ,” Kai chipped in. The boys got their surf lifesaving badges a year ago having been with their clubs since they were six years old.

Jacob Wroughton,15, Andrew Carse, 14 and Kai Brandson, 14.

As has been the case wherever they’ve been, choppers overhead heralded the Duke and Duchess’s arrival. The cheers were deafening and when they came down onto the sand Prince William was still in his jacket and Catherine sporting sky high wedges.

She must have been longing to slip them off, but still managed an impressive run across the beach when she found herself on the wrong side of a race that the children had staged.

The couple split to greet the crowds and children on either side of the beach. Andrew cried “Oh My God,” when he saw Prince William heading in his direction and not only scored a hand shake but a few words too.

“I asked him if it’s cool to be  a royal and have this many people here to see you,” he tells me. William replied “No mate, they’re here for you not me. He was amazing.”

Naomi Flood, 28, a coach and Olympic kayaker who showed the Duke around, said: “We talked about him surfing, and he said he is not very good. He said he goes down to Cornwall and has done some surfing there, and a little bit in Portugal, but he said he just flounders in the shallows,” adding, “We talked about George being a bit messy and drooling everywhere. Kate is just beautiful, we saw the crowd erupt when she walked near to them. They seem really normal people living in a totally different world to the rest of us.

“He was concerned about the breakers we saw, a couple of the kids were getting pummelled and I said it was trickier than usual.”

Grace Gurr, 13, from Manly also chatted to William. “He told me he had been surfing before and would love to try it here. He said if they lived here he would definitely put George in life surfing club and he [the Duke] would be a first aider on the water but would probably drown himself,” she says laughing.

Everywhere the royal couple turned there were groups of people calling their names eager to attract them. At one point the kids on the beach burst into a spontaneous “We love Will,” chant.

As they left the crowds started applauding and the royal couple broke into broad smiles. This was clearly a taste of Aussie life they couldn’t get enough of.
