Nicole Kidman is Keith Urban’s biggest fan

Keith Urban is on the cusp of releasing his new album, and it already has one superstar fan, his wife!
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban

The married couple of ten years looked very smitten with each other as they posed for cameras at the American Country Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday evening.

Nicole, dressed in a colourful Alexander McQueen design, couldn’t stop gushing about her hubby’s new record.

Speaking about his collaboration with Pitbull for the song, Sun Don’t Let Me Down, she quipped, “I definitely danced to that one. It is such a crazy good album.”

And the 48-year-old didn’t stop her praise there.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said, “I’ve been living with all the songs and even the songs that didn’t make the album,” while Keith blushed next to his wife.

Of course the duo had their signature pose, “The Nuzzle”, ready to go!

“I’ve seen the work [Keith] puts into it and the love. He’s a musician, so every little tiny detail is all him, and I love that. I love that he’s passionate about his music.”

In the past, the American Idol judge explained how important the Oscar-winner is to his creative album process.

“Nic, of course, hears everything over the course of about 15 months [that] I’ve been working on this record, so she’s heard everything over, and over, and over again,” he said.

Nicole and Keith were recently downunder with their girls for the Easter long weekend.

“I’m interested in how I respond just when she’s listening. Without her saying anything, I have a particular response that’s not necessarily the same without her. So, it’s important. I need the girl’s view!”

The couple are clearly just as in love as they were when they tied the knot a decade ago. The Aussie starlet recently revealed that she’s happy with her family just the way it is and has no plans of expanding it.

“I wish I wasn’t, but yes, I’m done with babies,” she told Marie Claire in March.

“But it’s a great time for us as a family because we’ve got these two glorious children who are five and seven and such a joy to be around.”

Nicole is very happy with her family life.

Nicole, who is mum to Isabella and Connor, her adopted children with ex Tom Cruise, and Sunday and Faith, her biological daughters with husband Keith, also spoke about the longevity of her marriage.

“We spend five days apart at the most and that’s it,” she revealed.

“Once you commit to that, everything becomes simple because we make all of our decisions around that priority. I don’t want to be away from him for one night, and I love that we both still feel the same way.”

“I just think we are meant to be together, it’s that simple,” Nicole added. “We are just really into each other, and into our kids, and we’re just a family.”

Dog that lost limb in Afghanistan gets highest military honour

She is the only reason I made it home to my family.
Lucca the Marine Corps dog

A brave German Shepard named Lucca has received the highest military honour for animals serving in military conflict after losing a limb in an explosion and being forced into retirement, reports 9News.

The bomb-sniffing canine served in the US Marine Corps for six years and took part in over 400 missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not a single soldier was injured on Lucca’s watch, which was cut short in 2012 when a homemade bomb injured her.

Lucca lost a leg and received burns to her chest.

Yesterday, Lucca became the 67th animal to receive the PDSA Dickin Medal for her service to her country.

“Lucca is very intelligent, loyal and had an amazing drive for work as a search dog,” said owner, Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Willingham.

“She is the only reason I made it home to my family and I am fortunate to have served with her. Today, I do my best to keep her spoiled in her well-deserved retirement.”

We hope Lucca enjoys retirement, she has earned a rest.

St Vincent’s Hospital’s dark cancer secret

A report has found they misled patients by giving them low doses of chemotherapy and failed to tell them.

For three years, dozens of cancer patients at St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney had been receiving low doses of chemotherapy, leading to deaths of a variety of reasons. They had been kept in the dark about it until now.

The news came to light with a government-ordered review by Cancer Institute NSW CEO Professor David Currow, commissioned by the NSW Health Secretary, which also revealed that the misdiagnoses were made by a particular doctor – Dr John Grygiel.

The hospital was found to have made ‘factual errors’ and ‘key omissions’ after it was revealed that 78 patients were given the low dose chemo drug carboplatin, including 30 people that had died.

This was from a period of 2012-2015, but the report will carry through to the past decade of patients treated by Dr Grygiel at three different hospitals, including two in western NSW.

St Vincent’s had previously said that a recurrence in cancer only came in five of the 78 patients and that only two had died.

The hospital also claims that only 70 patients were involved, and despite the mistreatment, they suffered no “negative impacts”.

There have been no studies by the hospital to prove their statement.

The new report could not link the underdosing to deaths, “it would be expected that on a population basis, a failure to adhere to protocols is likely to result in higher rates of local recurrence and higher overall mortality”.

The 100mg dose of carboplatin that was prescribed was around half to one-third less than what should have been prescribed to a head and neck cancer patient.

“Junior pharmacists, nurses and doctors who have practised in medical oncology at St Vincent’s Hospital during these years have either challenged the practice or sought an explanation for it,” the report said.

“The practice was widely known and senior pharmacy and nursing staff either knew, or should have known, it was occurring.”

Dr Grygiel was stood down in February and is currently overseas. According to St Vincent’s, he was “immediately counselled and placed under supervision” after the news of the report came to light but the review found this to be untrue.

The hospital knew about the findings for six months but didn’t alert patients and their families until a media report in February.

There was no urgency from the hospital when they did learn the news, and they failed to consider “clinical outcomes such as survival or cancer recurrence”.

“Given that the review was generated in part by the concerns about the rate of recurrence of people with head and neck cancers, it is not clear why the internal review failed to define relevant clinical and patient factors,” Prof Currow found.

The report also found “public statements by St Vincent’s Hospital … contained important factual errors … as well as key omissions.”

Dr Grygiel has been overseas and therefore has been unable to be interviewed over the matter, but will return this month to assist with a final report due out in July.

In February, he told The Daily Telegraph about the original ABC report: “I know that the patients weren’t harmed and they suffered no damage from the lower dose that was administered, so there’s nothing to apologise for.”

This scandal can open the hospital to potential lawsuits.

St Vincent’s CEO Toby Hall issued this apology: “We should have had better systems to pick up the treatment regimen he was following. It was clearly a flawed model of treatment and we absolutely apologise to patients for our failure to pick this up earlier.”

Why every teen must learn to cook

...and it's not just so they can cook you dinner, although that's very attractive.
teenager cooking

Whether you’re an avid home chef who adores discovering new recipes or a reluctant cook who only dons a cooking apron under duress, teaching your kids to cook is an essential skill that will benefit them for life.

When kids move out of home and fend for themselves, the skills we send them off with will affect their wellbeing as they navigate the world. Eating out all of time can provide excess calories, too much sodium and a blow to the hip pocket.

Both nutritionally, and comfort wise, everyone will agree nothing beats a home-cooked meal (except maybe a super fancy restaurant on your birthday) and accredited practicing dietitian, Georgie Rist, believes that starting earlier is the key.

“Food is an essential need of life, and being able to cook is an important life skill, that is learnt (or not) early in life. Setting good examples, both mum and dad, and involving children in meal preparation from an early age, is the best way to set your children up with skills that they will forever be grateful for,” says Georgie.

“Being able to cook and prepare healthy meals for yourself, your loved ones, is just as important as knowing how to brush your teeth. We brush our teeth twice a day and we are taught how to do this early in life.”

Although kids underfoot in the kitchen can be time-consuming and annoying, with time and patience you can train up a soux chef to help you out and actually make your life easier- See it as a long term investment.

“I started teaching my eldest at the age of six,” say mum of two, Jody Toomey. “He wanted to help in the kitchen so I thought I might as well teach him properly seeing as I used to chef. I started with basic techniques and safe handling of knives by getting him to chop potatoes. He’s now very good at it.

“Personally, I feel if you’re leaving it until they’re a teenager, you’re leaving it far too late.”

Food and wellness blogger, Brenda Janschek, found that spending time in the kitchen improved her relationship with her son as they had a mutual love of food and cooking.

”For us, it’s a place where we can talk about life’s problems and stresses and fritter them away into the ether, to replace them with a sense of peace, joy and fun,” she says. “Everything just feels alright when we are in there together.”

Everybody needs to eat, and the benefits of eating balanced nutritious meals go beyond helping to maintain a healthy weight and boosting moods and energy levels. Imparting knowledge of nutrition is setting up good habits for life.

“Food and nutrition has been an important part of my life since before he was born. I suppose it’s only natural that some of this will rub off on him, and he has certainly grown up to embrace my love of good food,” tells Brenda.

“My son is bustling and sporty and needs as much nourishment as he can get. It’s critical for his development. This is why we decided to write a recipe book together. Real Food For Hungry Teens is one of the most important things I’ve created in my work because my son and I created it together and he used the knowledge I gave him.”

There are many other benefits to teaching teens how to cook healthy meals, the least of which is one night a week they can practice on the family while you kick back and drink wine.

Other perks also include saving money which is valuable for home-leavers, supporting brain function and boosting memory which is fabulous for students, and also it’s very impressive on a first date.

Cooking and eating is also a brilliant way to connect with family and friends which is known to help alleviate feelings of social isolation.

Here are some simple and versatile staples that every teen should master –

Essential cooking skills – Stir fry

Stir fries – the most versatile dish that can almost get you through the week by swapping the vegetables, protein and carbohydrates (e.g. fish, tofu, chicken or lamb, with brown rice, basmati rice, quinoa, rice noodles or sweet potato mash with as many colourful vegetables)

Vegetable and Pumpkin soup

Lasagne

Roast lamb and roast vegetables

A BBQ

Basic green salad that can accompany any meal, including dark green leaves, tomatoes, snow peas, cucumber and capsicum. The more colour, the better!

Any meals that your parents or grandparents taught you, keep the tradition alive!

Liz Ellis and Matthew Stocks welcome their second child!

Congratulations are in order for Australian netball champion, Liz Ellis, and her husband Matthew Stocks, who welcomed a sweet baby boy into the world on April 4.
Liz Ellis Matthew Stocks

The happy news was confirmed to the Australian Women’s Weekly in a touching statement, where the joyful parents revealed details of the birth, including the baby’s height, weight and his adorable name.

“We are happy to announce the arrival of a baby brother for Evelyn. Austin Ralph Stocks was born last night,” the sporting star told the publicationg.

“He weighs 4.37kg, is 52 cm and has a full head of hair.”

The new arrival marks the second child for the couple, who have openly discussed their struggles to conceive in the past.

Speaking to The Weekly in January, the then mother-of-one opened up about three heartbreaking miscarriages she and Matthew suffered trying to conceive second child.

“For the first time, my age really hit home,” she said. “I was 40 at the time and, for the first time, I started to think maybe I’m not supposed to have another baby.”

Liz, 43, and her hubby Matthew, were thrilled to announce that their little family of three had welcomed a new member.

Liz and Matthew fell pregnant for the second time with the help of IVF, but sadly, fate had chosen as not-so-happy ending. Liz recalls this miscarriage as her “hardest.”

“This miscarriage was the hardest one,” she explained to The Weekly. “It was the beginning of last year. I was 42 years old. My body was a mess of hormones. I was distraught and I went into a depression.”

“And because making a baby has started to consume your every waking thought, you start reflecting on how stupid and careless you’ve been. We’d been married 16 years. Why didn’t we freeze embryos? Why didn’t we get started earlier?”

Three rounds of IVF later, they had just about given up when suddenly, it happened!

A baby brother for little Evelyn!

The expectant mama broke the news of her second pregnancy on channel Ten’s The Project in October last year.

“It’s been four long years, I’ve had five rounds of IVF and three miscarriages, but finally, I am pregnant,” she revealed through happy tears.

“We’ve got a beautiful little girl, Evelyn, who turned four a couple of weeks ago.”

“You learn a lot about yourself and your partner through this process. And it’s been a really long time coming and it’s really exciting.”

A huge congratulations to the new family of four!

Cottee’s cordial on its way out

Could it be the end of one of our Aussie icons?

Cottee’s cordial is on its way out with many Aussies turning their back on the once in demand drink and the news had dietitians cheering.

“We’ve got people who are now adults and parents themselves who had cordial when they were kids,” dietitian Dr Joanna McMillan told news.com.au.

SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

“If under 35s are stopping, that does show the message around sugar-sweetened drinks is getting through.”

Between October 2014 – 2015, cordial sales declined 5.8 per cent by value and 11.2 per cent by volume, which follows years of declining sales.

Supermarkets including Coles and Woolworths have also been gradually cutting cordial shelf space as consumers opt for low sugar or no sugar alternatives.

Toyota recalls 98,000 RAV4s

Toyota Australia has announced a recall of approximately 98,000 RAV4s due to a potential issue with the seat belts.

The models were built between August 2005 and November 2012 and the issue involves both outboard seat belts of the second row seats.

“There is a possibility that, in the event of a high-speed frontal collision, the seat belt webbing could contact a portion of the metal seat cushion frame, become cut and separate,” they said in a statement.

“If this occurs, the seat belt may not properly restrain the occupant, which could increase the risk of injury to the occupant.”

All affected vehicle owners will be notified by mail.

Eight signs you need relationship counselling

If you get help before it's too late, your relationship can become stronger than ever.
troubled relationship

When your relationship is going smoothly and you are happily in love, it feels as though it’s the two of you against the world. You can achieve anything with that person by your side, and you can’t imagine it ever going south.

But if you’re in a relationship that is struggling, you feel completely the opposite. You may feel negative about your home life, a negativity that leaks into everything and suddenly the world can feel bleak.

If your relationship is stuck, all is not lost and finding the right person to get you back on track can be the solution to getting your team mate back and getting back to taking on the world together.

A secret to relationship success is not waiting until things are dire and seeking help when you first see signs of difficulty and getting some tips on how best to resolve your issues.

Here are eight signs that your relationship may need some professional intervention from a counsellor.

You keep having the same arguments but they never get resolved

Often we have recurring themes in our arguments, but if you feel that you’re not getting heard and you can never reach a resolution or compromise it’s time to find some help.

“If you keep having the same arguments over and over again, it means something isn’t working in your communication and conflict resolution,” says Clinton Power of Clinton Power and Associates.

“A trained couples counsellor can give you the tools you need to resolve conflict quickly and effectively.”

You’re afraid of talking

If you’re afraid of bring issues up with your partner you need to ask yourself why. If you are afraid of arguments or conflict then it’s likely a cycle of communication break-down is already at play. If you’re afraid of violence or aggression, then you need definitely need to seek counselling.

You have become apathetic and can‘t be bothered trying to talk

Communication is key to any relationship, it’s how we connect. If you no longer wish to connect with your partner you need to ask why you’re still in the relationship.

“One of the most important aspects of being in a healthy relationship is the ability to communicate about important issues. And of course it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to talk to your partner about even mundane day-to-day things, so life isn’t so lonely and you can support each other,” tells Clinton.

If you’re constantly being negative towards each other

If you imagine a relationship as a bank, and every negative comment is a withdrawal, eventually your bank account is going to run out. You need to continuously make relationship deposits to ensure your love stays in credit.

If someone is constantly negative towards you, it’s hard to feel positive towards them. Often negativity is a mindset, so if you need to change your negative mindset a few sessions on the couch might help you out.

If you’re not happy with your sex life

Sex lives wax and wane as a natural part of life, but when sex becomes the elephant in the room and you are not only not doing it, but having trouble talking about it, it might be time for some intervention.

“It’s normal for all couples to go through stages of low and high sexual activity throughout the course of a relationship. However, if you’re not having sex with each other for months or even years and you can’t resolve the issue yourself, that’s a serious issue that requires professional help,” says Clinton.

“A trained sex therapist or relationship counsellor trained in sexual issues can help you in this case.”

The small issues are becoming big issues

If small issues like picking up shoes or who left the plate by the sink turns into a large argument, it’s possible that you have deeper issue eating away at you underneath.

Getting to the bottom of your conflict may not be easy on your own, you may not even fully understand at a conscious level, so seeking help with the big stuff can improve your relationship so it’s easier for you to let the small stuff slide.

You use threats to influence your partner

Nobody responds well to threats and if you’re reducing yourself to threatening to leave or various other negative vibes then it’s unlikely that things will turn out well for you.

“Being able to positively influence your partner is an important aspect of any relationship – it’s a good thing and both partners need to be good at it. But if you’re using threats to influence your partner, this is damaging and destructive to your relationship. While threats might work in the short term, you’re actually undermining your relationship in the long term,” believes Clinton.

You want to walk away

If you’re at breaking point and you’re ready to call it quits it’s not too late for professional help.

“Many relationships and marriages can actually start to improve at the point of breaking up. But make no mistake about it, it requires hard work, discipline and commitment,” tells Clinton.

“The sad truth for many people is it’s easier to walk away from a relationship than to work on it. That said, some relationships just can’t be saved.”

He put a ring on it! Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna are engaged

It's official, Blac Chyna is about to become a Kardashian!
Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna

Just 10 weeks after they took their relationship public, Rob Kardashian popped the question to his new flame on Monday night.

“They are engaged. They have been up all night celebrating,” a source close to the duo confirmed to People. “Rob is very excited.”

It looks like Blac is very happy with that sparkler! The couple shared this photo on their social media accounts to confirm the exciting news.

Following the confirmation, the curvy 27-year-old took to Instagram to announce her big news, simply saying, “YES…!…!…!”

Blac accompanied the caption by taking a selfie with her future spouse, where the mum-of-one showed off the large rock on her wedding finger.

Rob enlisted LA’s jeweler to the stars, Ben Baller, to craft the exquisite new creation.

The engagement ring features a 7-carat center stone with VS1 clarity, which is set on a delicate VVS diamond eternity band.

Clearly proud of his magical creation, Ben shared a video of it on Instagram.

“Congrats to @RobKardashian & @BlacChyna on getting engaged. Rob, I have never seen you this happy before and I’ve known you since you were a teenager. I’m glad you came to your day 1 homie to get this massive for your lady. You know I don’t play when it comes to diamonds. God bless,” he penned.

And Blac was clearly a happy gal, quipping, “I’m so blessed and honored to have good man in my life, I love you @robkardashian ! #7carats #VVS @benballer.”

The 29-year-old took his future wife and her mum, Tokyo, to celebrate at Ace of Diamonds strip club in Los Angeles.

Rob proudly shared a snap of Blac holding a wad of dollar bills, proudly flashing her new bling.

One of the first people to publically congratulate the pair was Blac’s bestie, Amber Rose.

“Congratulations to my Family @blacchyna and @robkardashian!!!” she gushed on Instagram.

“[Please] don’t let nothing or no one tear u guys apart! I never seen my sis so happy and I couldn’t be more happy for her! Sometimes we find love in the strangest places. Lol God Bless you 2! Now let’s get this wedding together so y’all can start making some babies #TrueLove #putaringonitsouknowitsreal #BlacRob.”

Even the mini Kardashians, North and Penelope, are on this trip!

Interestingly, though, none of the family members were in Los Angeles when Rob popped the question.

Kris whisked away all of her daughters, as well as Kourtney Kardashian’s ex Scott Disick, Kim Kardashian West’s husband Kanye West, and Kylie’s boyfriend Tyga on Monday afternoon for a surprise trip to Colorado.

“So, we are on our secret journey — we don’t know where we’re going because Kris Jenner won’t tell us — but, as long as the sisters are together, we’re OK,” Khloe, 31, joked on Kylie’s Snapchat.

So far, none of the usually social media savvy reality stars have publicly congratulated their brother Rob.

Of course, things will no doubt be a tad awkward at Christmas and family gatherings considering Rob’s younger sister Kylie Jenner is dating Blac Chyna’s ex, Tyga, with whom they share son King Cairo Stevenson, three.

One thing is certain, the Kardashian clan will certainly have trouble keeping up with this news!

Rob admitted to putting on over 45kg over the past few years.

But thanks to Blac, she has helped transform his life.
