Are the Gold Logie nominees rigged?

Taylor Swift tells the world “haters gonna hate”, and it looks like since our recent nominations announcement, TV Week has copped a few of those haters.
2016 Logie nominations

This story was originally published on TV Week and has been republished with permission

It seems some people are puzzled as to why and how the Gold Logie nominees were chosen.

At TV WEEK we were pleasantly surprised with the six nominees up for the Gold Logie. To us, it shows just how much Australian audiences are enjoying a diverse range of personalities on the box.

The award is voted by the Australian public. So, that means if the Australian public voted, then the Australian public are happy with the Gold nominees. Crazy, we know.

Here’s how it all works.

What are the two types of categories at the TV WEEK Logies?

Thanks so much for asking! Well, we have two types of awards that we hand out.

1) Best Awards (which are voted by the AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC)

There is a common misconception here that this list is picked by TV WEEK staff solely. That has never been the case. As much as we love TV, the biggest award in TV isn’t picked by three people in our office. We put it to the Australian public to vote for the shows and personalities that they love.

2) Most Outstanding Awards (which are peer-voted and adjudicated by panels of industry experts)

How do you get the list of nominees before they are voted on?

Another excellent question!

We open up submissions to all major metropolitan free-to-air networks such as SBS, ABC, Nine Network, Channel Seven and Network Ten, subscription TV networks (Foxtel and the channels they provide to customers) and subscription streaming services (Netflix, Stan, Presto).

The above then submit programs and personalities for each of the award categories.

Wait, what, I don’t get it?

OK, for example, Nine Network can say:

“We would like to put up House Husbands in the Best Drama category and these people for the individual awards.”

All of the stars and shows submitted by the networks appear in the lists for people to choose from.

Then, Roy Morgan Research sets up and manages the voting survey. They work with independent voting scrutineer Ernst & Young to make sure the voting process is fair and that the vote collection and compilation is in accordance with Australian auditing standards.

So again, it’s not three people in the TV WEEK office on one Wednesday afternoon picking the nominees. It is a combination of the networks putting them forward and then the Australian public vote on the TV WEEK website.

How are the Gold Logie nominees chosen?

So many great questions.

All candidates that are submitted for Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Presenter by the networks and streaming services are automatically entered into the Gold Logie category for voting.

The public then vote for either an Actor, Actress or Presenter from this big list that they would like to see crowned the Best Personality on Australian Television. Also known as the Gold Logie.

So, can I vote for Gold now?

Sorry, voting closed on January 17. The voting was open between November 16 and January 17 for TV lovers to vote for their favourite shows and personalities. We have our final list now and then winner will be announced on Sunday, May 8.

Model with DS becomes face of beauty campaign

Katie Meade has become the first model with Down Syndrome to front a beauty campaign. And she looks incredible!

Katie Meade, 32, is breaking down stereotypes of those with Down syndrome by revealing she’s the face of haircare brand Beauty & Pin-ups.

Katie, who was also born with a heart defect and lives in Iowa, US, will now appear on the packaging of a hair mask product by the brand. And she looks stunning!

She wears a t-shirt with a slogan ‘fearless’ and we think that word defines her in every way.

Deciding Katie would be the face of the product was simple – she was the ideal candidate. The company already knew of Katie as she was an ambassador for an organisation Beauty & Pin-ups work with, called Best Buddies International. They help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities meet people and find employment opportunities – which Katie was an ambassador of.

Kenny Kahn, CEO of Beauty & Pin-Ups, told Today: “It was important to us to build a brand that mattered, that stood for something. We kind of looked at each other and all said, Katie is the most fearless person we know.”

“She represents not just hope; she represents reality. She is just an incredible person.” he said.

Katie said: “They have given me opportunities to show the world that people with disabilities like beauty and fashion, and like to look good like everyone else.”

Bonnie Sveen is set to leave Home and Away for a new show with Jessica Mauboy

Bonnie Sveen is leaving Summer Bay for a brand new drama alongside Jessica Mauboy.
Bonnie Sveen

The exit will come as shock to fans, with the fan-favourite trading in the soapie for a role in Channel Seven’s brand new prime time series, The Secret Daughter.

The show stars Jessica Mauboy as Billie, a part-time country pub singer whose chance meeting with a wealthy city hotelier triggers a series of events that will change her life forever.

Jessica was cast last year.

“I’m looking forward to bringing this colourful character and story to life,” Jess said about her new role.

Meanwhile, the 2014 TV Week Logie Award winner will portray Billie’s best friend, Layla.

“I’m really happy to be joining the cast and working alongside such talented people like Jessica Mauboy,” Bonnie said in a statement.

“It’s an exciting time for me and I’m thrilled to be working on another production for Seven.”

This will be the first time Bonnie and Jess will share the screen together and the duo couldn’t be more pleased.

Both stars have found fame in the acting world.

“As soon as I saw one of her headshots come up during castings, I was like ‘hell yeah, I know her,” Jess told NewsCorp Australia.

“We can give each other a look across the room and then just burst out laughing, it’s that kind of relationship. Already, I’m glued to her, we are best friends and it’s amazing how that bond has aligned, how it fits with us in real life, on set and off it.”

Bonnie won a silver Logie in 2014.

Before adding, “That’s a massive step for her and I just love her work. I think she’s an incredible chick and just so much fun. To have her on board, to share her spirit and personality and experience is just everything for me.”

And the feeling is mutual for the soap star.

“It’s not like I’m really confident [as a singer] … I mean, here I am standing with the amazing Jess, but I’ve loved every minute of it so far,” Bonnie admitted.

The Royal Mint has also paid tribute to the monarch by the means of a stunning, commemorative £5 coin.

The collectable piece comes in a range of materials including silver, gold and platinum gold.

Prices range from £20 or $37.50 AUD, up to a whopping £5,000 or $9,375 AUD for the rare platinum edition. But don’t worry, if you happen to be also turning 90 on April 21, you can nab yours for free!

Engraved into the design of the commemorative coin is the large number 90 surrounded by a garland of 9 individually designed roses, with each flower symbolising a decade passed.

The design includes a wreath of laurel leaves with, four points to symbolise England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The coins artist and sculptor, Christopher Hobbs, told the Daily Mail: “I wanted it to be a simple design which had the feel of continuity – after all, the Queen has reigned for 63 years.”

Three months were spent designing the coin before it was submitted for approval from the Queen herself.

Lavish celebrations for the massive milestone will also be carried out over a weekend in June.

Incredible find in Aldi chip packet

“I felt this large object and pulled my hand straight out because I didn't know what it was.”

Ellie Steele was tucking into her packet of cheese and onion chips she bought from an Aldi store in Selby, UK, when she found a little surprise.

A roast potato!

Well, at least we know it really does come from actual potatoes.

The 20-year-old said: “I was just feeling a bit peckish at the time so I thought I’d have my last bag of cheese and onion crisps that I got from Aldi.”

“When I reached in the bag to get a crisp out I felt this large object and pulled my hand straight out because I didn’t know what it was – it was really greasy though.”

“Whatever it is I was pretty grossed out to be honest – now I do find it quite funny, it was just so random.”

Image: Mercury Press.

The potato must have taken up a lot of space – there were only four crisps in the packet!

“I was pretty gutted to be fair, I’d been looking forward to those crisps for a while,” she said.

We feel your pain, Ellie.

A spokesperson for Aldi said they’d apologised and are looking into what happened.

Charlize Theron: It’s not easy being pretty

“How many roles are out there for a gorgeous, f**king, gown-wearing eight-foot models?”

Oh, the perils of being gorgeous!

Charlize Theron has opened up to British GQ revealing that life as a glamazon is really difficult.

Scroll down for video

“Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that’s the end of the story,” she said.

“How many roles are out there for a gorgeous, f**king, gown-wearing eight-foot models? When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away.”

However, to score those “meaty roles” she’s gone to some extreme lengths in the past, including shaving her locks for Mad Max: Fury Road.

And how could we ever forget the prosthetics and extra 13 kilos she gained for her Academy Award-winning performance in Monster.

The 40-year-old also spoke out against the outdated standards around ageism.

“We live in a society where women wilt and men age like fine wine. And, for a long time, women accept it,” she said.

“We were waiting for society to change, but now we’re taking leadership.”

“It would be a lie to say there is less worry for women as they get older than there is for men … It feels there’s this unrealistic standard of what a woman is supposed to look like when she’s over 40.”

Woolies happy birthday sign fail

Can you spot the mistake?

A Woolworths customer, Michael Hutchinson, wanted to celebrate his child’s 12th birthday, but noticed something a little odd about the ‘Happy Birthday’ bunting he bought from a Bowral store.

So, he snapped a pic and uploaded it to the Woolworths Facebook page:

“About to have miss now 12s party and family get together. Yesterday we bought this ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ from Woolworths Bowral or should i say ‘HAPPY☆BTRTHDAY’. C’mon, surely you could aquire this sort of product locally and spelt correctly.”

The sign appears to replaced the ‘i’ with the ‘t’! Awkward.

Woolies responded with: “Hi Michael, we’re so sorry about this. We’ll follow up with the relevant team to look into product control right away to ensure this doesn’t happen again with other customers of ours. In the meantime, please feel free to return to your local Woolworths for a full refund. Thanks.”

One person commented: “I think it’s just the way the ‘i’ is joined to the other letters – it does say birthday but it also looks weird.”

And we’re kind of inclined to agree! When you look at the green T, it looks slightly more stretched than the supposed ‘i’.

Another person responded to the post saying that it was no big deal and to “lighten up” about it.

Amy Schumer: Don’t call me plus size

Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8.

Amy Schumer has hit out at Glamour magazine after they labelled her “plus size.”

The magazine released its first plus-size focused special edition, listing A-listers like Melissa McCarthy and Adele on the cover, as well as Amy.

However, here’s the problem:

“I think there’s nothing wrong with being plus size. Beautiful healthy women. Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8,” she wrote on her Instagram account.

The actress went on to explain that Glamour had “put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn’t feel right to me”.

“Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size,” she wrote.

“What are your thoughts? Mine are not cool glamour not glamourous.”

Glamour have since responded to her comments, saying, “First off, we love Amy, and our readers do too — which is why we featured her on the cover of Glamour last year.”

“The cover line on this special edition — which is aimed at women size 12 and up — simply says ‘Women Who Inspire Us,’ since we believe her passionate and vocal message of body positivity IS inspiring, as is the message of the many other women, of all sizes, featured,” the statement said.

“The edition did not describe her as plus-size. We are sorry if we offended her in any way.”
