Parents refuse chemo for their dying boy

Against the parents’ wishes, a Perth court has ordered chemotherapy be given to the six-year-old for a brain tumour.

A Perth court has ordered a six-year-old boy be given chemotherapy for a brain tumour after his parents refused because they don’t want him to become a “lab rat”.

Legal action was made against the parents – Angela Kiszko and Adrian Strachan – by a doctor from Princess Margaret Hospital after they denied the treatment for their son Oshin.

According to The West Australian, the parents want palliative care for Oshin so the family can spend quality time together. Ms Kiszo believes chemotherapy is “toxic hell”, as she watched her mother and stepmother die from cancer.

She told the court: “The children are not really alive, they are completely drugged and exhausted and on the verge of death.”

The court heard that if Oshin – who had surgery last year – doesn’t get treatment, he could die within months.

He has a been given a 30% chance of survival for the next five years if he has the chemo, and if he combines that with radiotherapy, that number will go up to 50%.

Oshin with his parents and sisters

Family Court chief justice Stephen Thackray said that while the parents believe what they’re doing is right, the possibility of a long-term cure “is the matter that most heavily must weigh in the decision”.

“One other matter that I think ought to be given weight is that the uncontested medical evidence and great majority of other parents faced with a similar decision would opt for the intervention that the hospital proposes,” he said.

As ordered by Justice Thackray, treatment will start soon after Oshin’s upcoming birthday.

He has also banned the parents from trying to take their son out of the country.

Madonna heads to London amid ongoing custody battle over son Rocco

Madonna has touched down in London on a mission to resolve her tumultuous custody battle with ex-husband, Guy Ritchie over their 15-year-old son Rocco.

The infamous Madonna returned to London on Wednesday April 6, after wrapping up the final Australian leg of her 8-month-long Rebel Heart tour.

The Material Girl hitmaker landed in the British city in a bid to be reunited with her 15-year-old son Rocco, who is currently the main point of dispute in Madge’s ongoing custody battle with ex-husband Guy Ritchie.

The 57-year-old stepped off the plane looking refreshed from some well-deserved rest after her world tour.

Walking through the airport, she donned an oversized black coat and polka dot trousers, but she kept her face covered with large black sunglasses.

Although Rocco is currently in the Maldives with his father Guy, sources close to the mother-of-four reveal to UK’s The Sun that she has returned with the concern, that because of Rocco’s ever changing situation, her son is missing too much school.

“She has said she is prepared to fly over to London when Rocco gets back and take him to school herself,” a source told the publication.

“Madonna is concerned Rocco is going to be missing so much school. She wants Rocco to relax but his education is very important.”

Madonna looked ready for business as she hopped off the plane at London’s Heathrow airport.

Rocco has been living with his British film director father and his step-mum, Jacqui Ainsley in London ever since he refused to return to Madge’s Manhattan home in December last year.

Throughout the battle, the Vogue singer’s tour meant that she was unable to attend court sessions in both the UK and the US, further lengthening and publicising the process.

The couple, who filed for divorce back in 2008, were reprimanded by a judge in Manhattan for dragging their son through the acrimonious legal battle.

Judge Deborah Kaplan expressed her disappointment at the time, saying: “Frankly, both parties here have chosen to live their lives in a very public way, and may welcome the exposure, but the child has not,” she said.

“I urge them to consider what is the best interest of their son – which may be to remove him from the spotlight.”

Rocco would rather stay in London with his father than live with his mum.

In preparation for her return to London, Madonna shared her excitement at being reunited with her son in an Instagram post on Wednesday. Posting a close-up selfie, the songtress wrote: “YES! Good things are coming!”

But will Rocco be happy to reunite with his mum? Only time will tell.

Ritchie and Madonna are due back in court June 1.

Madonna has shared multiple snaps of her son during the ongoing dispute.

Auckland schoolchildren injured in Sweeney Todd play

A production of Sweeney Todd became frighteningly realistic at an Auckland high school, after two students were injured onstage.

Investigations are underway at a prestigious Auckland school after two students were cut with a prop razor wrapped in duct tape during a theater performance.

St John Ambulance Service confirmed two people were injured at St Kentigern’s College in Pakuranga just after 9pm on Wednesday.

The two 16-year-old boys were taken to Auckland Hospital with what witnesses have described as “cuts to the neck” following the opening night of the musical Sweeney Todd. One of the boys was described as being in a serious condition.

St Kentigern College head Steve Cole described it as an “unfortunate and isolated incident”.

He told TVNZ the razor was “a prop that was covered in all sorts of duct tape and silver paper, this had been done numerable times during rehearsals, numerable times even during the show.

“It was a razor that you would expect to see in a production of Sweeney Todd. But it didn’t have a sharp edge. I’m very confident that the health and safety situation was strong,” he said.

He said while it was not unusual for schools to use props like this – and that the razor’s edge had been filed down and bound – in hindsight it may have been a better idea to eliminate all risk. But Mr Cole said the drama students involved had been adamant the play look as authentic as possible.

“It was chosen because of the very nature of the talented young men and women we have in year 12 and 13 who wanted something that would push their skills and the boundaries.

“It was deemed important to make it as realistic as possible.”

Staff at the private school are now investigating exactly what happened.

“Our priority is to support the boys and their families, along with the rest of the cast and crew,” Head of College Steve Cole said in a statement.

“We are distressed about what happened last night and are conducting a thorough investigation.

“We are pleased that both boys are in a stable condition and have been talking with both their families.”

The remaining performances of the production have been cancelled.

An eyewitness said the audience were not told an accident had happened and that the blood seen on stage was not fake.

“No announcements were made to the audience that the throat slitting was not all just ‘fake blood’, the show went on, we never knew anything about the real blood being spilt until later,” the audience member told Fairfax Media.

Sweeney Todd documents the tale of a barber by the same name, who kills his victims using a barber’s blade. Mrs Lovett, who owns the pie shop downstairs, then turns the victims into meat pies.

It has not been confirmed if the children were injured during one of the violent barber’s blade scenes or when they exited the stage through a trap door.

A spokesperson for the hospital said both boys were in a stable condition on Thursday morning.

She wouldn’t let go of the baby

A student nurse has shared the tragic details of trying to save toddler Shreyan Thapa after he was hit by a car in Auburn.

Tributes are flowing for 16-month-old Shreyan Thapa who was hit by a car in Auburn yesterday.

It has been reported the tot was walking with his great-grandmother when he pulled away from her hand and ran onto the road.

A woman driving a Toyota sedan reportedly swerved in an attempt to dodge the toddler, but was unable to and crashed into the pair.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports a student nurse Mariam Zreika, 19, tried to save the baby.

Mariam said she heard a huge bang and turned to see the great-grandmother distraught and clutching the child to her chest.

“I ran straight away over to the lady, trying to dodge cars,” SMH Online reports.

“She was just screaming and yelling and crying, she wouldn’t let go of the baby.

“I asked her: ‘Can I see if the baby is all right?’

“She was from a non-English speaking background, she wasn’t understanding what I was saying to her. She had the baby tight on her chest.

“I thought, ‘I need to see if the baby is alive.’ We took him off her and put him on the floor.”

Shreyan’s mother, who had been studying, rushed to the scene and was comforted by onlookers.

The great-grandmother was not injured, but taken to Westmead Hospital in shock.

The community has gathered together leaving flowers, toys and notes at the scene.

Doctors shamed for bizarre selfie with a newborn

A group of surgeons who took a photo of a newborn baby they had just delivered have found themselves at the center of a social media scandal.

A group of surgeons who took a photo of a newborn baby they had just delivered have found themselves at the centre of a social media scandal.

The incident, which shows three men in hospital scrubs and facemasks holding the tiny baby over the shoulder of one doctor, reportedly took place in the delivery room of the general hospital in the city of Calpulalpan, in the central-east Mexican State of Tlaxcala.

The curious photo has surfaced on Facebook in recent days and caused many to call for the doctors to be sacked.

According to reports Facebook user Ramon Villegas uploaded the selfie and wrote: “How professional! Whilst one worries about their wife and new baby, hospital professionals are without ethics in the general hospital of Calpulalpan.”

Villegas said he wanted to share the photo, so that those involved might be identified.

He allegedly wrote: “Share so that everybody knows what kind of people work there, hopefully the directors will see it and they will be dismissed.”

It is unclear what connection Villegas has to the hospital or child, or how the parents of the newborn feel but the photo has been widely criticised by those online who have seen it.

However some have come to the defence of the doctors.

User J.d. Paredes wrote: “I do not see the problem, the doctors are proud to have brought a life into the world and they want to celebrate it.”

Last year doctors were slammed for posting selfies with newborns that exposed the mother’s.
