10 body language tips to score you the job

Women shaking hands in office

When you’re in a job interview, it’s not just what you say that counts. Body language plays a huge role in how we’re perceived.

“A candidate can give out thousands of non-verbal cues within the first minute of an interview,” says Jane McNeill, director of Hays.

“And those messages can make more of an impact than the words that you use during the interviews.”

Try to keep these in mind for the next time you’re in the hotseat.

1. Dress smart

Know what style of dress – uniformed, smart casual or corporate – is appropriate for the job you want. If in doubt, err on the side of business style rather than under-dress.

“You need to appear in moderate dress,” says Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) chairman, Peter Wilson. “You can always correct an overdress but you can’t correct for an underdress.”

2. Gesticulate

Show your passion. If you have great ideas but hide your enthusiasm with stiff body language, other people won’t believe your ideas.

“Don’t be afraid to gesture as it shows that you’re enthusiastic and expressive,” says McNeill. “The interviewer can read how open and honest you are by looking at your hands.”

3. Smile, but keep it natural

“A smile is one of the very best ways to communicate sincerity and a friendly, approachable demeanour,” says McNeill.

4. Sit upright

Wilson suggests sitting as you would in a yoga class. “Sitting calmly and upright,” he says. Sitting too far forward looks too eager while slouching makes you look disinterested.

5. Use props, like water

If they offer a drink, take it as it will convey that you are confident and relaxed. “It can also be used as a prop to perhaps give you some time to answer a difficult question”, says McNeill.

6. It’s all in the eyes

“Make eye contact, but don’t stare,” says Wilson. Staring for an extended period can make your interviewer uncomfortable so simply hold their gaze for a second longer before breaking away.

7. Keep an open posture

“Don’t cross your arms or hide your hands as it can make you look defensive or uncomfortable,” says McNeill. Keep them open and resting lightly in your lap.

8. Don’t fidget

“Don’t play with change in your pocket, bite your nails or let your leg become restless or the interviewer will sense that you feel uneasy,” says McNeill.

“Avoid touching your face and hair as it’s considered a stress comfort cue,” says McNeill.

9. Nerves are normal

If you’re a little nervous, don’t worry. It’s expected. “Most employers recognise that you’re going to be a little on edge because you want to do your best,” says Wilson. Remember to slow down. If you need to take a moment, take it. It’s important to be in control rather than letting yourself ramble.

10. Practice

Remember: Practice makes perfect. McNeill recommends that you practice entering and leaving a room and how you will say hello and goodbye to the interviewer. Before the interview, practice different poses in front of a mirror. Good luck!

Things nobody tells you about having kids

“That this tiny human can make me feel like a terrible human being or like a super hero with one look.”

Being a parent is like being on a constant rollercoaster – it’s amazing and difficult and incredible all at the same time.

On blog site Reddit, parents shared the things they wish they has been told before they became parents from the down-right annoying to the simply wonderful.

  • That they have their own personality and it shows from day one. Don’t try to shape your kid’s character, go with it and guide them. Sometimes, that character sucks, and you need to accept that.

  • That peeing alone is a luxury

  • That even after millennia of billions of people parenting, nobody can agree on anything about how to go about it.

  • That when they get sick (which they will do, frequently) they get really sick. A common cold can floor them for a whole week; they’ll hardly eat and run a temperature of 40+. It will scare the s^^^ out of you.

  • That I would feel worried or guilty at least once every day for the rest of my life.

  • You will never be able to sit down and finish a dinner without getting up.

  • That this tiny human can make me feel like a terrible human being or like a super hero with one look.

  • Newborn baby ears feel soft like rose petals. Rub your cheek against them all the time because one day their ears will be hard like yours.

  • Nobody tells you that when your child is high needs, you will go through a grieving process that never ends. A grieving process for the child he/she could have been, a grieving process for the relationship you envisioned when dreaming of parenthood.

  • How much it hurts when they say I hate you. Even though you know they are just mad and they don’t mean it…it stings. I regret ever doing that to my mom, and now that I’ve experienced it…just prepare yourself for it.

Kids as young as 13 now on Tinder

Scarily, children can download the app for free.

Teens as young as 13 are using dating app Tinder without realising the danger they could be in.

The app has a section for 13-17 year olds as well as one for over-18s and a survey shows more school children now use the app than Australian single adults aged over 35.

Scarily, children can download the app for free however; there is no way of knowing the real age of the person they are matching with.

“The threat exists and is real and vigilance by parents about the apps their children are using is critical,” Taskforce Argos detective Inspector Jon Rouse told The Courier Mail.

Queensland Police Minister Bill Byrne has also called on parents to take an increased role in educating their children on the dangers of the app.

“It is so important for parents to speak with their children about the dangers of social media and smart phone applications and check their online friends and contacts regularly,” he said.

5 reasons you should invest in yourself

Furthering your education is one valuable way to increase earning potential. While the thought of going back to study may be daunting, it proves to be financially rewarding in the long run.
Invest in yourself, woman smiling

According to the recent AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report, Smart Australians, it pays for people to invest in their education first and foremost. This research has shown that those with a Postgraduate Degree will earn more than $3.17 million over their lifetime, while a person who went to Year 11 or less will have a projected income of just $1.74 million. Follow these tips to get you started.

Set goals:

Ask yourself what it is you’re hoping to achieve in the next phase of your career and how much you want to earn. Do you want to get ahead in your current field or are you looking for a total career change? It’s important to set both short term and long term goals. Also investigate whether or not you will need to re-skill to reach these goals.

Do your research:

Find out what job opportunities exist in the current market and what type of skills employers are looking for. There’s little financial benefit in investing time and money in further study if it’s unlikely to lead to a higher paying job. It’s also a good idea to research which courses are most appropriate for the specific roles you’re interested in.

Go back to school:

When a person decides to return to study and advance their career, it can be very exciting but also a little overwhelming. There are plenty of ways for older people to improve their qualifications including TAFE courses, Vocational Education Training (VET), university courses, post graduate degrees and online courses.

Employer support:

Some companies offer professional development or tertiary studies assistance programs to help staff improve their qualifications and long term value to the organisation. Some employers will assist with course costs and be flexible if staff need time off to attend lectures.

Draw up a budget:

Many tertiary courses cost thousands of dollars so it’s vital for anyone returning to study to create a budget. Work out how much your course will cost and how you’re going to pay for it. Those who can’t afford to give up full-time work could consider studying part-time. Low interest student loans can be applied for through the Federal Government’s HECS-HELP program.

Rocco finally visits mum Madonna

Will they become a happy family again?

Guy Ritchie was yesterday pictured dropping off his 15-year-old son Rocco at Madonna’s London home, but he didn’t stick around for long.

This comes after a High Court judge warned Guy and Madonna they could ruin what is left of Rocco’s childhood if they fail to settle their ongoing custody fight.

Rocco was there for about two hours, before leaving with a friend to go skateboarding.

Madonna returned to London from her world tour to rebuild the family relationship, and a source says it seems to be working.

The source said: “Since Madonna’s return to London, things have taken a definite turn for the better.”

“Guy dropped Rocco at his mum’s and they had a good chat before he went off to skate with his friends.”

“Everyone is happier than they have been for weeks and it’s great for all of them that life is getting back to normal.”

Paul Walker’s daughter, Meadow receives $13 million settlement from her father’s fatal car crash

The daughter of the late Fast and Furious actor has been awarded $13 million in compensation for her dad's death, as never-before-seen footage emerges of the actor behind the wheel.
Paul Walker Meadow Walker

Last week, Paul Walker’s 17-year-old daughter, Meadow received a $13 million [$US10 million] settlement from the estate of Roger Rodas, who was the driver involved in the tragic car accident that killed both himself and the Hollywood actor.

“The amount paid by the estate of Roger Rodas into a trust for Meadow Walker only covers a fraction of what her father would have earned as an international movie star had his life not tragically been cut short,” Meadow’s lawyer, Jeff Milam, said of the settlement which was reached back in November of 2014.

Meadow is the only child and sole heir to her father’s estate and according to her attorney, Jeff Milam, the funds will go into a trust for the teen.

From a happier time: Meadow shared this adorable throwback snap of her as a baby sharing cuddles with her now-deceased father.

The Fast and Furious actor was a passenger of Roger Rodas’ in a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, when the car – which was reportedly travelling at the speed of 150kms per hour when it crashed into trees and a utility pole before exploding in Santa Clarita, a city Northwest of Los Angeles.

News of the settlement comes just a week after a judge cleared automobile manufacturer, Porsche of any wrongdoing or involvement in the accident, after Roger’s widow Kristine claimed that defects to the car were the cause of the deaths.

A life lost: The charismatic father died at age 40.

However, the court’s ruling doesn’t necessarily mean that the case is closed, as Meadow has also filed her own, separate case against the luxury car brand.

“The issues in the cases are very different. The federal case was filed on behalf of Roger Rodas, who was the driver of the Porsche Carrera GT and was killed instantly upon impact,” her Attorney Jeff Milam said in a statement.

“Meadow’s father, Paul Walker, was a passenger in the car. He survived the crash but was trapped and burned to death because of the vehicle’s defects.”

“Meadow will continue to fight to hold Porsche accountable for selling a defective product that kills.”

A scene from the crash site shows the world’s love for the Fast and Furious actor.

As the case continues to unfold, never-before-seen has emerged of the actor smiling from ear to ear as he takes the wheel of a Nissan modified R35 GT-R in Japan.

In the clip, an ecstatic Paul can be seen test driving the vehicle and it’s sheer power. His love of motor sports is palpable as he whoops excitedly and laughs as the car reaches its full potential on the road.

“We share this as a tribute to Paul’s passion for cars, good humor, and a reminder of the gravity of such a loss,” GTChannel revealed in a statement.

Take a look at the rare footage below! Post continues after video…

“All proceeds from this video will be donated to the Paul Walker Foundation, a charity launched by Paul’s daughter as a tribute to his enduring legacy.”

According to the opening credits of the clip, the rare footage was discovered by the GTChannel in an office move.

The clip, which was uploaded to their YouTube channel on April 5, has since been viewed over 615,000 times.

17-year-old Meadow shares her father’s love of the ocean.

Since her father’s tragic death, the 17-year-old launched The Paul Walker Foundation, a charity who’s simple message is to “do good”.

Taking to Instagram on September 12 2014 – Paul’s birthday – Meadow published a stunning throwback snap with her dad alongside a heart-felt caption explaining her exciting new mission.

“Reflecting on my father, I found myself reflecting on his passions. His passion for the ocean, his passion for rescuing animals, his passion for helping people and his passion for spontaneous goodwill,” she penned.

Before explaining: “I wanted to start this foundation because I want to share that piece of him with the world. I want to share that part of him with others. I am tremendously proud to be launching The #PaulWalkerFoundation (@paulwalkerfdn) on his birthday. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my father. #DoGood.”

The Wiggles stars Emma Watkins and Lachy Gillespie tied the knot on Saturday in a fairy tale wedding in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Emma, 26, looked divine in a long-sleeved ivory lace couture gown custom-made by Suzanne Haward while husband Lachy Gillespie, 29, chose a suit with Scottish detailing.

Emma shared a snap of the big day on her Facebook page, with the caption: “Lachy. Love. Laughter. The best day of my life.”

While Lachy wrote: “Seeing Emma was the most magical moment of my life. Everything else just seemed to melt away.”

The wedding was held at Bowral’s Hopewood House and was attended by 200 guests, including the other half of the popular children’s band, Simon Pryce and Anthony Field, who even played the bagpipes during the ceremony.

The current Wiggles line-up at the wedding.

Two other original Wiggles, Murray Cook, 55, and Jeff Fatt, 62, were also in attendance. Greg Page was the only one absent, due to a “prior commitment”.

It was a rather Wiggly affair all round, in fact, with the couple’s rings featuring Emma’s signature Wiggles bow engraved on them and the cake featuring their Wiggles skivvy colours.

The couple announced their engagement last May.

Restaurant installs outdoor fridge so homeless people can eat leftovers

What a wonderful idea.

A restaurant in India has installed an outdoor fridge to provide food for local homeless people.

The public fridge, outside Pappadavada restaurant in Kerala, in south-west India, is stocked with leftover produce from the restaurant and is then given to those less fortunate.

The fridge, dubbed “the tree of goodness” opened for local homeless people last month where it provides access to free food 24/7, with locals now stocking the fridge with their leftovers as well.

Owner, Minu Pauline, came up with the idea after seeing a woman rummaging through the bins.

“The only thing I want to discourage is that people are actually buying food and putting it in the refrigerator,” she told The Huffington Post.

“I’d rather people put their excess food they already bought but aren’t going to eat in the refrigerator instead of the trash bin.”
