Tara Brown speaks from Beirut cell

As a judge warns there is “no chance” the charges the 60 Minutes crew will be dropped, Tara Brown has told media she is being treated well.

As a judge warns there is “no chance” the charges laid against the 60 Minutes crew detained in Beirut after a botched rescue mission will be dropped, Tara Brown has told News Corp Australia she is being treated well.

News Corp reports judge Rami Abdullah has warned the 60 Minutes crew there is “no chance” the charges against them will be dropped as the case will be held over until Monday.

Reporter Tara Brown along with producer Stephen Rice, cameraman Ben Williamson and sound recordist David Ballment have been holed up in a Beirut cell since attempting to recover two children Noah 4, and Lahela, 6 whose Brisbane mother Sally Faulkner claims were kidnapped.

In the botched rescue mission, Channel Nine paid two men to grab the children off the street where they were walking with their grandmother and a nanny.

Speaking to local media, the grandmother said she was ‘pistol whipped’ during the incident.

On Wednesday, Ms Faulkner and the 60 Minutes team members were brought before Judge Rami Abdullah.

They were interviewed privately and wearing handcuffs.

The team were supported by Channel Nine’s News Director Darren Wick.

The 60 Minutes crew have been formally charged with hiding information, forming an association with two or more people to commit crime against a person, kidnapping or holding a minor even with their approval and physical assault.

Speaking from her cell, Tara Brown told News Corp it’s hard to gauge what will happen next.

“Quite genuinely we are being treated well by the standards here, it’s fine, it’s not crowded,” she said.

Julie Bishop: Mum taught me I can do anything

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop reveals the amazing and inspiring role her mother played in her life.

Julie Bishop is arguably the nation’s most powerful woman, who can hold her own on the world stage.

But in the May issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, she reveals her inspiration and drive comes from her late mother, Isabel.

“Mum was always a source of wisdom,” she says. “She was married at 21 and raised four children on a rural property in the Adelaide Hills. By the time my older sisters had left home, she was frustrated with her life and complained she would never be able to get a job outside the home. I went through the classifieds and found a job for a community youth leader and I pinned that ad to the phone.”

Julie’s mother got the job, and never looked back and soon she was running the local youth centre.

“Then she went into local politics and eventually became the mayor of East Torrens. She had wanted to study law at university, but couldn’t as she had to look after her mother who was dying. So, I guess Mum subconsciously encouraged me into law – that was what she’d wanted to do, but didn’t have the chance. And she showed me you can achieve anything.”

Julie Bishop told her story to encourage other young women, as part of her role as a judge in The Australian Women’s Weekly Qantas Women of the Future Awards.

The royal couple were on the last day of their Indian tour before they set off for Bhutan, when they were caught up in the disaster.

Catherine and William felt the tremors during their stay in Assam in north-east India, where they were visiting the Kaziranga National Park.

“As far as I know, tremors were felt across the region and everyone is okay,” a royal spokesperson confirmed.

Kensington Palace’s official Twitter account have yet to comment on the event, but a Hello! royal reported has revealed, “The Duke and Duchess and their party are safe and sound as well as members of the press, who are staying in Guwahati, the largest city in Assam.”

Meanwhile, British Deputy High Commissioner Scott Furssedonn-Wood, who was staying in the same jungle resort as the couple, recalled the event: “We felt the tremor very strongly, but all is fine.”

Earlier on Wednesday the mum-of-two and her husband embarked on a safari adventure, where they had the chance to feed baby elephants and rhinos.

It was during this time the 34-year-old fondly spoke of her darling two kids Prince George and sweet Charlotte.

The royal mum is missing her darling kids.

When village elders asked why they didn’t bring the kids, Catherine said, “Because George is too naughty. He would be running all over the place. The next time we come we will definitely bring them!”

The future Queen also admitted she missed her kids, saying that the little girls dancing in the village reminded her of Princess Charlotte.

This is the first prolonged visit that she has spent apart from her young ones since she’s given birth to them.

Despite the fact that Kate’s mind was back home, it was clear the royal was loving her time in the natural environment.

All worth it! Catherine was blown away by the beautiful animals and surroundings.

The pretty brunette and her hubby-of-nearly-five-years sat on bamboo mats, where they learned about how the village was established in the 1970s, and how it now grows tea due to the local elephant and wildlife population.

“How do the local people view the elephants and rhinos, are they considered sacred?” William asked.

The 33-year-old was told the villagers “love” the elephants because they happily live alongside them.

Margaret Cunneen: the reason I fight to protect kids

The famous prosecutor reveals what drives her to seek justice against child sex offenders.

She’s the big-hearted, sharp-shooting, black-belt Crown prosecutor who, up until 18 months ago, was best known for her extraordinary record of putting some of Australia’s most notorious murderers, rapists and child abusers behind bars.

But Margaret Cunneen SC has had the spotlight shift onto her in a public battle with NSW’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), which accused her of attempting to pervert the course of justice following a car accident involving her son’s girlfriend.

In a candid interview published the May issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, Margaret discusses the impact the long-running fight has had on her and her family, how it has altered her career plans – and the truth about what drives her to seek justice against child sex offenders.

She reveals it was her own experience of being sexually abused as a young girl by a neighbour that motivated her to devote much of her career to working on child sex abuse cases.

“It happened all through my early childhood,” she tells The Weekly. “I can’t remember when it started. Mum used to leave us with him when she went shopping. He was about 40 and he had spina bifida. He was incontinent and I remember he smelled of urine. I was eight when he died.”

After putting herself through law school while working full-time as a young woman, Margaret was determined to use her skills as a lawyer to ensure child abuse victims’ voices were heard.

“I knew children could keep the secret for a long time and I understood how it could happen literally under your parents’ noses and how, from that era, you had no words or confidence to report it,” she says.

In her 40-year career, Margaret has put numerous paedophiles, including Robert “Dolly” Dunn, Colin Fisk and Phillip Bell, behind bars. From 2012 to 2014, she was Commissioner of the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry into child sexual abuse in the Maitland-Newcastle area.

She’s also mother to three adult boys, a black belt in tae kwon do and married to 9th dan grand master Greg Wyllie, a martial arts teacher. She was the inspiration for ABC TV series Janet King and was depicted by actor Lisa McCune in the Channel Nine telemovie Blood Brothers.

Exclusive poll: What Australia really thinks of the monarchy

While state and territory leaders all support a republic, the Australian people beg to differ. Our national survey reveals the popularity of the Queen and how the power of the young royals cannot be underestimated.
Loading the player...

As the Queen celebrates her 90th birthday, an exclusive poll has revealed Australians prefer Prince William and even toddler Prince George to become our head of state.

Only 25 per cent are happy with Prince Charles as our future King – Australians say they think it is time we “cut ties” and his wife, Camilla, is also a sticking point.

The Australian Women’s Weekly commissioned OmniPoll to conduct an independent nationwide survey, and the results appear exclusively in the magazine’s May issue.

And despite where our political leaders currently stand, only 35 per cent of regular Australians want to sack the Queen and become a republic.

“From our survey, the Queen’s popularity is certainly in no doubt,” notes Acting Editor-in-Chief Juliet Rieden. “But the results are rough on Charles, who has a deep-seated personal relationship with Australia.

“Yet his image has never fully recovered from the tragic death of Diana. So, while it’s unlikely Charles will step aside, ultimately, it could be his son and grandson who secure his position.”

THE KING AND US – KEY FINDINGS

  • For the first time in history, Australia’s Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and all the state and territory premiers support a republic. According to the survey, however, only 35% of those questioned want to dismiss the Queen and declare Australia a republic. 39% are in favour of the status quo and 26% are undecided.

  • Support for a becoming a republic is weakest in Tasmania (18% for republic), while Queenslanders are keenest to lose the Queen (36% for republic).

  • Just 25% of respondents are in favour of Charles becoming our King and Head of State, while 49% prefer Prince William. Even toddler Prince George outpolls Charles with 32% happy to see the youngster as our Head of State in the future.

  • Of those unhappy with Prince Charles as our future Head of State, almost half (47%) felt it was time to cut ties with the monarchy after the Queen’s reign ends – while 30% of this group declared they didn’t want Camilla Parker-Bowles to be ‘Queen of Australia’.

  • While it’s no surprise that the older generation has a close affinity with the monarchy, only 23-percent of 18-to-24-year-olds supported a republic.

  • OmniPoll surveyed a cross section of more than 1,200 Australians over the age of 18 (with sample quotas for each state, city and regional areas, gender and age).

The Queen turns 90 on April 21. She has been on the cover of The Australian Women’s Weekly more than 60 times. The last time was in 1982. She is on the cover, along with Prince William and Prince George in the May issue, on sale Thursday April 14.

Family arrested at gunpoint at Area 51 sparks fresh UFO rumours

Video has emerged of a family of terrified tourists being arrested at gunpoint in Area 51 – inciting fresh UFO rumours.

Video has emerged of a family of terrified tourists being arrested at gunpoint in Area 51 – inciting fresh UFO rumours.

The dramatic footage posted to YouTube last month shows armed guards order a family of four out of their car on a deserted road in the remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base, within the Nevada Test and Training Range. This is the so-called “Extraterrestrial Highway” due to rumours of alien spacecraft being tested.

Jeremiah Hasvold filmed the footage of the family and guards while he and his son were checking out the site from the Area 51 gate. The hostile security reaction has caused many to speculate the classified zone really might be home to alien secrets.

For years, the base was unacknowledged until 2013, when its existence was declassified in a CIA document.
