Michelle Bridges hit a nerve: I was obese and unhappy

Michelle Bridges doesn't speak for all obese people, but for me, there is some truth behind her controversial comment.

When Michelle Bridges said that she has never met “someone who is morbidly obese and happy” she sparked a fierce social media backlash that labelled her a ‘fattist’ and blasted her for fat shaming.

Bridges certainly doesn’t speak for all overweight people, and high profile women such as Chrissie Swan and Meshel Laurie have vehemently waved the flag for body positivity.

But for me, Bridges hit a raw nerve. For me, there is some truth behind her controversial comment.

Twelve months ago I was obese.

I wasn’t unhappy. In fact I felt strongly that being overweight wasn’t a reason to be unhappy. I wanted to be a positive influence for my daughters and show them that bodies come in all different shapes and sizes.

I didn’t avoid swimming pools or beaches. I even wore a bikini, there was nothing to be ashamed of. ‘It’s just my body’ I reasoned. ‘It’s not me.’

But despite my sunny outlook the weight was dragging me down.

I was sluggish, lethargic and fond of sitting on my rotund arse. It was hard to get up in the morning. I was living in a fog.

I wasn’t unhappy – but I wasn’t exactly happy either.

On holiday with my family I let my kids pull me in to the sea for a swim and a splash. My husband took some photos (later he said that there was a danger that I’d never be in our family pictures, I was always behind the camera).

When I saw the photos I got a bit of a shock. It wasn’t just the weight (rolls of fat cascading over my hips) it was the air of apathy that hung around me. I looked like someone who didn’t care.

Something started to shift. I embarked on a health kick. This time it will be different I told myself. And it was.

I embraced exercise in a new way. I started working with a personal trainer who inspired me to push myself harder than I ever had before. I ran round the park, red faced and sweating profusely. I was determined to enjoy it – even when I felt like puking.

I found myself living in the moment – ‘here I am’ I told myself during every spin class, run and PT session.

I made other changes too. I gave up alcohol (at first to give my health kick an extra boost and then because I enjoyed sobriety. No one was more surprised than me) I weighed my food and re-learned what it meant to be full.

I’d like to say that I did all this because I wanted to be fit and active and that the inevitable weight loss didn’t matter. But, it did matter. And while it wasn’t my main motivation in the beginning my resolve grew with every kilo shed.

I replaced my wardrobe with a smaller size. Then I replaced that wardrobe with a smaller size and that wardrobe too. I became a tiny bit addicted to shopping – the thrill of getting into smaller clothes was a new type of high.

They say that old habits die hard, but I was working harder than ever. My new lifestyle became my new normal.

A friend told me that I was like a different person – and she wasn’t referring to my smaller figure. “You just seem really happy,” she said.

It’s been a year. I am 24 kilograms lighter. I am the fittest I’ve ever been. I have more energy to run after my children (sometimes literally, they scoot and I run, exercise and family time rolled into a fast paced game of tag) and I’m rarely grumpy.

Perhaps the strident body positive outlook that I strived so hard to maintain was just a clever disguise. Maybe I was in denial.

But when I look back on myself, overweight and perpetually harassed I see a woman in knots.

And now, untangled from the shackles of my own obesity, I really am happy.

The Monkees to release new album

We’re still believers!

This year marks just over five decades since Monkee-mania began.

And now, all three surviving band members – Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork – have teamed up to release their first new studio album in 20 years, Good Times!

Scroll down for video

The three men have all written songs together, provided vocals and performed music on the album and the unmistakable voice of the late Davy Jones is also included with a vintage vocal on the Neil Diamond-penned “Love To Love.”

Fascinatingly, they have also completed many songs for Good Times! that were originally written and recorded for the group during the 60s.

Harry Nilsson wrote the title track Good Times, which he recorded at a session with Nesmith in January 1968.

The production was never completed, so the band returned to the original session tape (featuring Nilsson’s guide vocal) and have created a duet with his close friend Dolenz.

Good Times will mark the first time Dolenz and Nilsson have sung together since Dolenz’ May 1973 single Daybreak.

Good Times! will be available on May 27 and can be pre-ordered now.

10 things you never knew about Taylor Swift

It’s safe to say that we learnt A LOT about the 10-time Grammy award winner when she sat down with Vogue for 73 questions.
Taylor Swift

Nothing was off limits when Vogue US went to visit songtress, Taylor Swift in her Beverly Hills home – which was absolutely stunning, mind you.

The Bad Blood singer didn’t hold anything back when answering 73 candid questions on everything from her insecurities and feelings of being “slut-shamed” in her ’20s, to her girl squad, her guilty pleasure food and, of course, her cats!

To help you discover more about the girl with it all, here’s 10 things we learnt about the 26-year-old superstar:

The telling interview only made us love the star more!

1. T-Swizzle’s dream diet would be made up of endless chicken tenders

When asked what her favourite food is, the singer admits, “I mean if we’re saying, like, what I wish I could eat everyday if calories didn’t count is, like, chicken tenders.” She also revealed that her favourite cocktail is a “vodka, diet coke”, and that should you ever do a Maccas run with the star, you can expect her to order a “cheeseburger, fries [and a] chocolate shake.”

2. Taylor’s friends are extremely loyal

When asked what surprises her most about people, Tay replied, “I’m pleasantly surprised by the fact that I tell my friends absolutely everything and it never ends up getting out.” Of course, Taylor was referring to her Bad Blood squad of gal pals, including Selena Gomez, Lorde, Lily Aldridge and Karlie Kloss.

The infamous Taylor Swift squad!

3. Her boyfriend, Calvin Harris, is an incredible present giver

The best gift the star has ever received was an olive tree, given to her by her musician partner. “My boyfriend planted an olive tree in my yard for Christmas,” Tay confessed.

4. She has some powerful words to say to her younger self

“If I could talk to myself at 19, I would say, ‘Hey, you’re gonna date just like a normal 20-something should be allowed to, but you’re going to be a national lightning rod for slut-shaming,’” the triple-threat said regarding the relentless media scrutiny she faced in her ’20s on her dating life.

Eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot a tiny picture of Calvin and Taylor in a small frame attached to the sink pipe in her kitchen.

5. The Pennsylvania-born starlet has a hidden nickname

We’re used to calling her T-Swizzle, Swifty, Tay and so on, but her brother Austin has a very near and dear nickname for his big sister. “My brother calls me Taffy!” the star quipped.

6. Taylor is just as obsessed with cats as we expected

Within the almost 10-minute clip, the blonde beauty guided the camera into a formal sitting room where multiple kitten knick-knacks could be seen atop the shelves. “Probably more than 10 and I don’t know if you’re counting the one that’s alive down there,” she replied when asked how many cats were in the room. She also managed to name 8 different cat breeds in 10 seconds!

Tay’s perpetually scowling cat, Olivia, is famous on Instagram.

7. Her style icon is Blake Lively

The musician takes fashion inspiration from the stunning, Gossip Girl actress, Blake Lively and would happily raid her closet given the chance.

8. Her favourite TV show and movie is also ours

“Friends!” Tay quipped when asked what television show she likes best. And her favourite film? “Love Actually”.

9. The Iconic singer didn’t always want to make music

At age five, Taylor admitted that she wanted to take after her father and be a “stock broker”. “I did not know what a stock broker was, yet I walked around telling people I wanted to be stock broker when I grow up,” she said.

10. Taylor wants to become a doctor!

Touching on her next goal, the Blank Space hitmaker explained that she “really [wants] an honorary doctorate degree because Ed Sheeran has one and I feel like he looks down on me now because I don’t have one.”

The star has a network of loyal, supporting friends.

I nearly died while giving blood

Derek Zemmin had a near death experience, and the other side has changed his life.
Derek Zemmin near death experience

I nearly died when I was in college and the experience of death has changed me forever.

Death was so peaceful but coming back to the world I felt a horrible pain, like someone repeatedly punching me in the stomach.

I saw two women and a man surrounded by a black circle that appeared to be getting larger and closer. The lightening strikes of pain continued and the circle widened and I could see them clearer.

Then I could hear the man yelling “Derek, breath Derek… breath , Code Red!!!”

I was trying to say stop whatever he’s doing because it hurts and then I noticed it was his arms on my chest giving me CPR.

“Code Red!! Breath Derek, breath!!”

Then the worst pain of all I felt my chest cave and then inflate… it was my first breath.

My girlfriend and I had decided that we would both go for an STD blood test. When it was our turn we were split up, and went into two rooms across the hall from each other.

In the room were two nurses and a dodgy old wooden school chair and desk combination with the bean shaped desk attached to chair by a metal beam. I wondered if this was a suitable medical chair. One of the nurses noticed the look on my face and said:

“We like to use these old desks to keep patients arm in position, just makes it easier.”

I folded myself into the small chair. She mentioned that her colleague Suzy had just finished training and that I was going to be her first patient on her first day.

I should mention that I have an issue when it comes to blood. It’s not the blood of others or horror movies person bothers me, however, the thought of a metal object piercing my vein, a direct line to my heart, taking something from me and filling into a tube bothers me a lot.

I mentioned this to the nurse and she gave instructions to Suzy and I about how to handle someone who may get a bit woozy or possibly faint. She assured me I would be fine and to look at the wall, pick a focal point and trust Suzy.

With that she left the room while Suzy began. I calmly found a black spot for my focal point. I told Suzy I didn’t want a commentary about it but before I could complete my sentence she said “Don’t worry we are almost done.”

I then started to think about my life. Going back to when I was a child, about two or three years old, it is my earliest memory that I know of. I can recall seeing peas and carrots on my highchair as I look down on my baby fingers struggling to pick them up to eat. I know this is a memory because as I got older I hated peas.

I then recalled my first asthma attack, outside our house playing baseball with the neighborhood kids and suddenly not being able to breath, falling down and passing out.

One after the other I continued to see parts of my life, different friends and hilarious moments, the good, the bad, the really bad, life changing moments, girlfriends, heartbreaks, my first love, flashing before my eyes.

It was as if I was at some crazy movie theater showing all the moments and journeys of my life, but not just seeing them but feeling them, happy, sad, important, fearful, pure joy, exhilarating, euphoric, dramatic, content getting faster and faster leading up to the past month of getting a scholarship into college and up until the last second and then black.

Total darkness… nothing.

No light, nothing but calmness… empty space but not the feeling of an empty void but a sense of peace, comfort and zero emotion. Everything I had just visualized and felt was gone.

I will never forget this next part but yet I can’t quite remember it. I didn’t hear a voice or see anyone… I simply was just there and someone else was with me, a kind of presence. Similar to being in a dark room with someone you love and trust completely, you know they are there but not entirely sure of their exact location.

There was a conversation that took place for hours and possibly days. There were no words spoken; it was more like an exchange of thoughts.

All I can remember is this other presence gave me a message which I understood as:

“Derek, you will not remember most of this but you will remember this time that was shared. What was just learned will be within you always but it is not your time. Know that the path you are on, what you believe in is the right one and to be grateful for every moment you have. Give love and happiness to others.”

I have searched (and am still searching) for anyone or even a book that might have documented that same experience but I have had no luck.

After I was dragged from this place by the intense punching like pain in my stomach I realized I was at the clinic, something bad had happened, I saw Suzy crying, the older nurse holding one of my arms and another nurse holding my legs and I immediately went into shock.

“Derek calm down, calm down your going to be ok… breath” this time his voice more controlled and not as loud.

“Calm down… somebody get him some orange juice and water”.

Finally I started to slow down my breath. My arm felt funny and I looked down, the older nurse was cleaning blood from my arm. I realise the floor was covered in blood, my back, my hair. It was everywhere.

After about twenty minutes the doctor said I was going to be ok

“What happened?” I asked.

It is thought that I passed out and when I collapsed I landed in a position that cut off the blood flow to my brain. Suzy couldn’t life me and needed to get another doctor to help but they were finishing a patient first. They couldn’t have known that I was dying.

My near death experience was amazing and something I have never forgotten. It has changed my life in more ways than one. I live life knowing that death is something not to fear but something to include as part of life.

The moments we have, we should appreciate every second. Life is way too short and it is up to each and every one of us to make the most of it because it can be gone in a flash.

Afternoon tea always consists of three tiers, and the bottom tier is the first stop. It’s filled with savory sandwiches and wraps. Think egg, salmon and spinach, and, of course, a traditional cream cheese and cucumber sandwich!

The middle tier

No afternoon tea is complete without delicious, freshly baked scones. Topped with jam and cream – and in some cases today lemon curd – they’re the quintessential English treat.

The top tier

In their own words: The Royal Family on The Queen

Behind closed doors, Her Majesty is a vibrant family member who isn’t afraid to poke fun of herself!
Loading the player...

As she celebrates her milestone 90th birthday, the people who know her best give some fascinating insights into what Queen Elizabeth is really like.

Prince William on her personality

“From a personal point of view, I am privileged to witness the private side of the Queen, as a grandmother and a great-grandmother. The Queen’s kindness and sense of humour, her innate sense of calm and perspective, and her love of family and home are all attributes I experience first-hand. All of us who will inherit the legacy of my grandmother’s reign and generation need to do all we can to celebrate and learn from her story. Speaking for myself, I am privileged to have the Queen as a model for a life of service to the public.”

Prince Harry on her funny streak

“She is very funny but I think she gets it from my grandfather. They are very funny together. My family is the same as any other family when it comes to humour behind closed doors, though I’d like to think I was funnier than my grandmother.”

Watch Prince Harry talk about his beloved ‘granny’ in the player below. Post continues after the video!

Duchess Catherine on her love and support

“She’s been very generous in not being forceful at all and in any of her views, but I feel she’s been there, a gentle guidance really for me.”

Prince George and Princess Charlotte on their great-grandmother

Although he’s not quite old enough to articulate his bond, proud mum Kate has revealed how fond Queen Elizabeth is of her great-grandson. “George is only two-and-a-half and he calls her ‘Gan-Gan.’ She always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay and that just shows her love for her family.” While Duchess Catherine says of Princess Charlotte: “The Queen was really thrilled that it was a little girl, and I think as soon as we came back here to Kensington she was one of our first visitors here.”

Three royal rascals! (L-R) Princess Charlotte, Queen Elizabeth as a little girl and Prince George. The trio all bare a very similar smile.

Prince Charles on her incredible ability to balance family and duty

“I remember my mama coming up when we were being bathed as children, wearing the crown [before her Coronation in 1953]. It was quite funny – practicing. My mama takes great pride in her family, from being a young mother at the start of her reign, to now being a great-grandmother twice over. The fact that my mama has been a constant feature on the scene has provided that sense, I think, of continuity in a time of immense change over 60 years.”

Prince Philip of her gentle nature

“Tolerance is the one essential ingredient. You can take it from me that the Queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance.”

Watch members of the Royal Family talk about Her Majesty in the player below. Post continues after the video!

Prince William on her enduring help

“She’s been a very strong female influence and having lost my mother at a young age, it’s been particularly important to me that I’ve had somebody like the Queen to look up to and who’s been there and who has understood some of the more, um, complex issues when you lose a loved one… So she’s been incredibly supportive and I’ve really appreciated her guidance.”

Prince Harry on honouring her legacy

“People have always said ‘Do you feel as if you’re following in her footsteps?’ Well that’s exactly what we are doing. There is nowhere on this planet that I can think of that she hasn’t been in the last 90 years. She’s been everywhere.”

First koala joey makes debut at Australia Zoo

This is the first koala joey born this season at Australia Zoo in Queensland.

The first koala joey born this season at Australia Zoo in Queensland has made his debut in the past week, poking his head out of his mum’s pouch for the first time.

The yet-to-be-named baby male koala is the first of a record 13 born on Koala Island as part of the zoo’s breeding program, which focuses on genetic diversity in an effort to save the vulnerable species.

“The population of koalas in Queensland are being radically affected by disease, habitat loss and the increasing human footprint,” said Kirsten Latham, head of the Australia Zoo koala department.

The new joey will stay with his mum, Ash, for over a year while he learns a variety of life skills such as climbing and grooming, before reaching independence. According to a statement released by the zoo, “the little daredevil has already been caught climbing onto his mum’s head while the other joeys are still nestled in the pouch!”
