Mum warns of dangers of poorly-covered beach campfires

A two-year-old girl was on a family holiday when she suffered second and third degree burns after stepping on a beach fire that hadn’t been extinguished properly.

Warning: graphic images below

Camryn Keag, 2, was on holiday in Queensland’s Stradbroke Island with her parents Nicole and Russell, and her older brother Jack when she stepped on a beach fire that hadn’t been extinguished properly.

The incident occurred on Flinders Beach. As Camryn was walking up from touching the water, she screamed.

“I ran towards her – I thought she’d been bitten by a snake or a spider. She had been standing, but she’d fallen to her hands. It was then I said to Russell, ‘the ground is hot’,” Nicole told Kidspot.

They immediately took her back to the water, with an ambulance on the way. Nicole said Camryn’s foot was white.

She was rushed to Royal Brisbane Childrens’ Hospital, and had surgery to cut away the debris and treat her wounds. She’d suffered third degree burns to her feet and second degree burns to her hands.

It’s going to take years for little Camryn’s scars to stretch and grow, so it’s expected she will have many more skin grafts to come.

After the incident, she had to go through multiple skin grafts, compression garments and frequent visits to hospital for check-ups and dressing changes.

Camryn’s feet after the accident (left and middle), and exactly a year later (right).

The beach fire was covered by sand and not by water, which means the tragic accident could have been avoided.

Sand starves a fire of oxygen and extinguishes flames, but it can still continue to heat the ground beneath the surface for up to 24 hours.

Since the incident, Nicole has been doing whatever she can to raise awareness of, and to implement measures to enforce, the proper extinguishing of campfires on beaches.

Every year, it’s estimated that up to 40 children are burned in this manner in the state alone.

Nicole, along with Kidsafe and the surgeon who has helped repair Camryn’s foot, has worked towards the funding of signs to go up in Queensland Parks and Wildlife areas.

Next month, Nicole will be joining the 900km bike ride from Sydney to Brisbane for charity initiative Bike4Burns 2016, to raise funds for research in treatments and scar prevention for kids with burn injuries.

Camryn is now 4 and happy as ever.

Pregnant mum and son stabbed by used needle at McDonalds

A mother who was 17 weeks pregnant took her son, 3, to the bathroom of a McDonald's store in Newcastle and were both stabbed with a used needle.

When Amanda Der Veer was 17 weeks pregnant, she took her son Aspen, 3, to McDonald’s in Newcastle as a treat after a shopping trip.

After eating, Amanda, 32, took Aspen to the family room bathroom. While Amanda was washing her hands and Aspen was playing with toy cars, she heard him cry out.

“I turned around to see him looking at his hand and I realised he was holding a needle in the other hand,” she told Kidspot.

“My heart stopped and I lunged and took the needle from him. Then I realised it was sticking out of my hand,” she says. “I pulled it out of my hand and threw it.”

The incident happened five months ago on November 7 at the Macca’s store on King Street in Newcastle, NSW.

The store manager saw them both emerge in tears, and took them to the ladies bathroom to wash their hands.

“Then I went over to my friends and told them what happened and started vomiting all over the floor. I just felt so filthy, dirty and sick,” she says.

Amanda’s heart was racing. “First I thought what if whatever was in the needle had gone into Aspen and then I thought about me and the baby,” she says.

“I had already had two miscarriages and all of my pregnancies have been high risk.”

Amanda and Aspen went to hospital to be tested, but they have to return after three months and then again at six months to learn if they have contracted any diseases.

Before the incident, Amanda was taking tablets for gestational diabetes. Ever since, she’s had to take insulin injections, because the tablets no longer work. Using needles now is something she struggles with.

“I’ve tried twice to inject myself. The first time, I just sat at home staring at it – I was a crying mess. The second time, I vomited everywhere. Now my husband has to inject it for me.”

Amanda said she had to call the McDonald’s store six times before she was able to get through to the manager, and after no follow-ups were made by their head office, she gave up.

A McDonald’s spokesperson told Kidspot that any incident of this nature is not acceptable and the company works continuously to ensure safety of staff and patrons.

“Our restaurant was in contact with the customer on a number of occasions immediately following the incident in November; but we certainly apologise if the customer feels she has not been appropriately supported, we have again reached out in the past week to offer any further assistance we can,” they continued.

How the Queen celebrated her 90th birthday

Ringing in her huge milestone, Queen Elizabeth II opted to be with her people on her big day.
Queen Elizabeth ii

Taking part in a walkabout, Her Majesty was greeted by thousands of adoring fans, who had lined the streets of Windsor to wish her a very happy 90th birthday.

Our very own Erin Holohan was lucky enough to be at Windsor for the landmark occasion.

Describing it as an electric day, she waited alongside fellow eager fans, in the hopes to wish the Queen a happy ninetieth.

Speaking to some of the well-wishers, Erin was told some had lined up outside Windsor Castle from as early as three or four in the morning on Thursday, with some sleeping out overnight, just in hopes to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty on the special day.

Erin was delighted to catch a glimpse of Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

At 11:30am, the band arrived, playing a beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace.

Donning what can only be described as a majestic lime green statement-making outfit, the 90-year-old wore a Angela Kelly design completed with her favourite pin — the star diamond brooch, gifted to her in 1981.

Elizabeth was driven to the top of Castle Hill where she stepped out of her car to be greeted by loud cheers from the crowd.

Joined by her husband-of-68-years, Prince Phillip, Her Majesty waved at her biggest fans before going on a short walk and then launching a new walkway in her honour.

Charles greets his “mummy”.

Of course, no birthday would be complete without cake.

Joined by fellow 90 year olds from around the country, the royal cut her very own birthday cake.

Later that day the royal birthday girl attended a beacon lighting ceremony.

Joining them was the couple’s eldest Prince Charles and his wife Duchess Camilla.

The Queen was delighted by the turnout.

Following the short engagement, the Queen headed home to Windsor Castle, where she was believed to be having a private dinner with 71 guests, including 30 members of the royal family,

No doubt she’ll be treated to some more cake!

Baby born with no eyes finds joy swimming

Adorable Daisy Smith was born with a rare condition where her eyes weren’t formed during pregnancy, but she’s found her happy place in the water!

An adorable baby girl born with no eyes has discovered her love for swimming.

Scroll down for video

13-month-old Daisy Smith was born with a rare condition known as anophthalmia.

This condition – where the eyes aren’t formed properly during pregnancy – affects around one in every 10,000 babies in the UK.

When Daisy’s mother Danielle, who lives in South Wales, UK, was warned by her doctors that her unborn baby had a cyst on her brain, she knew without a doubt she would still go through with the pregnancy.

“After we got over the shock, we realised that Daisy is just like any other baby,” she told The Sun.

“We were offered a termination but I am so glad we didn’t take it. We made the right decision.”

Tragically, Daisy’s hearing is also impaired as she suffers from glue ear. This makes her heavily reliant on touch – which probably explains why she enjoys swimming so much!

Despite the little tot’s struggles, Danielle says she’s happy and giggly all the time.

Daisy’s family take her out swimming regularly and to physiotherapy sessions to help with her mobility.

“We want her to have a normal childhood,” explained Danielle.

“Swimming was part of that but we were amazed how much she took to the water.”

“Now when we go every week, Daisy remembers the sound of the creaking doors at the swimming pool so she knows where she is and starts laughing.”

So sweet!

At the moment, Daisy uses expanders to open up her eye socket, but when she’s older, Danielle hopes to have glass eyes made for her.

It’s not the first time Princess Mary has played photographer.

Earlier this year, the 44-year-old released a set of photos to commemorate her twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine’s fifth birthday.

“No one told me I would be coming home in diapers too!” Chrissy Tiegen on her childbirth

New mum, Chrissy Teigen opens up on the not-so-joys of motherhood following the birth of her first child last week.
Chrissy Teigen Luna

We love Chrissy Tiegen for her no-filter, candid views on social media, and although she and her talented hubby, John Legend just welcomed a baby girl into the world, this much has not changed!

Giving her 1.4 million followers a very candid insight into her new life as a model mama, the Cravings cookbook author treated her fans to an honest series of tweets that perfectly depicted the aspects of childbirth that a lot of celebs never talk about.

“Buying myself a push present,” the 30-year-old tweeted along with a picture of a ‘perineal irrigation bottle’ worth $2.84.

The apparatus, also known as a peri-bottle, is used by new mums as a hand-held bottle with a squirt function, intended for rinsing an area that has been stretched during childbirth.

But according to Chrissy, the product that aims to ‘heal and reduce the chance of irritation or infection of the sutured perineal area’, although helpful, has a less-than-glamorous name.

“Have you EVER heard of a grosser name for a product, EVER?” she joked shortly after sending out her first tweet.

Chrissy has never been one to withhold the candid details!

The mum-of-one also made another hilarious musing about motherhood, joking that she never would have guessed that her and her adorable baby Luna, would be leaving the hospital in matching outfits.

“No one told me I would be coming home in diapers too,” the brunette beauty tweeted.

But despite the nappies and push presents, Chrissy is absolutely besotted with her new life as a mother to her darling girl.

Watch a still-pregnant Chrissy talk about baby names in the video player below! Post continues…

On Tuesday, the Sports Illustrated model took to Instagram to share the first look at little Luna Simone Stephens with the world.

“Hi my Lulu!” the proud mum captioned a pic of her cradling her bundle of joy.

And clearly motherhood suits the cookbook author, who beamed down at the bub with a smile of content as she sat on her deck looking fresh faced and relaxed.

We are melting!

The parents, who announced they had welcomed their daughter earlier this week, decided to reveal her arrival a few days after her actual birthday on April 14th.

“She’s here! Luna Simone Stephens, we are so in love with you! And sleepy. Very sleepy,” Chrissy penned in her trademark hilarious style to her Instagram followers.

The adorable pic was quickly followed up with another from the model’s husband, John Legend.

Mum caught rushing home from work to cover up husband murdering her daughter

A six-year-old girl was allegedly beaten to death by her father, with the mother helping destroy evidence of the crime.

The mother of a six-year-old girl rushed home from work after her husband, who allegedly beat the little girl to death, called her to come home and cover up the murder.

Ben Butler, 36, called his graphic designer wife, Jennie Gray, 35, when she was at her London office in October 2013. The case is currently undergoing a court trial.

It was only 11 months earlier that their daughter Ellie had returned back to the stay-at-home dad after a conviction of him assaulting her when she was a baby was overturned.

A jury heard that six-year-old Ellie suffered head injuries similar to those caused by a fall from a one-storey building or a high speed car crash.

When bullied Jennie received the call to come home, she jumped in a cab. The cab driver, Derek Greenwood, spoke at trial, saying she was desperate to get home.

“I was just trying to refuse the job because it was all the way to Sutton,” he said.

“Then she said ‘would you take me to Sutton, because my child is ill.’”

He later heard her on the phone three-quarters of the way into the journey, saying ‘you’ve gone where? You’ve done what?’

Jennie has admitted she staged the scene and lied to police during the investigation into their daughter’s death, but hasn’t admitted to child cruelty.

Ben says little Ellie’s death was an accident. He was the only adult present in the house at the time.

Forensic pathologist Dr Nathaniel Cary believed the head injury Ellie suffered could have been from a caused by a heavy blunt weapon, or from being thrown against a wall or the ground.

The court heard a multitude of injuries inflicted on Ellie, including at least two significant and fatal impacts to the head.

The prosecutor believed Butler committed the act in a moment of rage, and he had an extremely short fuse, always “teetering on the edge of a violent loss of temper”.

Both parents are also accused of child cruelty when Ellie had a shoulder fracture in the weeks prior to her death, and it was left untreated.

The jury heard that Jennie was besotted with her husband, and destroyed evidence to cover up his crime.

CCTV captured Jennie as she left her work moments after the phone call, and her colleagues seemed to gauge there was something seriously wrong.

In 2009, Butler was jailed for 18 months for an alleged 2007 attack on six-week-old Ellie which resulted in severe head injuries. She was taken into care.

His convictions were overturned, and the couple eventually won custody of Ellie.

The trial continues.

Bindi Irwin addresses rumours Terri has found new love

I really believe that each and every one of us has that one person in our life.
Bindi Irwin addresses rumours Terri has found new love

Rumours have been swirling that Terri Irwin has found love again however, her daughter Bindi has denied the claims.

Speaking to KIIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O Show, Bindi, 17, said she still believes her mother is in love with her late father.

“My mum is still absolutely married to dad, and I really believe that each and every one of us has that one person in our life,” the wildlife warrior said.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Irwin’s were set to move to the US due to Terri’s new love with a “controversial” new man.

But again, Bindi shot down the claims.

Terri, Steve and Bindi

“No, no. Mum read that article and went, ‘Wow! He’s so mysterious that I don’t even know about it!’”

At the time, a spokesperson from Australia Zoo told Daily Mail, “This seems to have literally come out of thin air. There is absolutely no truth to that claim.”

They also denied the claims they were moving overseas, saying, “The Irwin family live at Australia Zoo. They always have and they are not planning to move anywhere.”

The Irwin’s have dedicated their life to continuing Steve’s work, spreading the word about wildlife conservation and running Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.

Sadly, Steve passed away in 2006 after being stung in the heart by a sting ray when Bindi was just six years old.

She has always maintained that she can feel Steve with her at all times and she reiterated that point on air with Kyle and Jackie O. She said her dad’s “always with us” and she saw no need in trying to reconnect with his spirit through a medium.

Recently, Bindi paid tribute to Steve in the most touching way; by receiving her driver’s licence in her dad’s old ute.
