British temp worker sent home for not wearing heels

PricewaterhouseCooper have really put their foot in it after sending home their temp receptionist, unpaid, for not wearing heels...
Nicola Thorp

Nicola Thorp is now stepping to it and fighting back after she claims she was unfairly dismissed for her outfit.

The 27-year-old recounts how on her first day at PwC’s Embankment office in the UK, she donned a pair of work-appropriate flats, but she alleges she was told by a supervisor she must come to work wearing two to four inch heels.

The part-time actress also claims she was “laughed at” when she pointed out the double standards with men being allowed to wear flat shoes.

Standing up for herself, Nicola refused to give in to their demands, and was in-turn sent home without getting paid.

Speaking to British paper The Standard, she recalled, “When I arrived on site, I was turned away from work because I was not wearing high heels.”

“I expressed my confusion as to why, and they explained that flat shoes are not part of their dress code for women.”

“The supervisor told me that I would be sent home without pay unless I went to the shop and bought a pair of two to four inch heels. I refused and was sent home.”

Adding, “When I pointed out that my male colleague was allowed to work in flat shoes, and that I felt that I was being discriminated against, I was laughed at. I left feeling upset and confused.”

Heels may look fab, but are they actually practical?

The multi-million dollar corporation have since commented on the issue.

A PwC spokesperson told CNBC that the accountancy firm outsources its receptionists with Portico, a management company, and does not implement a dress policy for them.

“We first became aware of this matter on 10 May some five months after the issue arose. The dress code referenced in the article is not a PwC policy. We are now in discussion with the suppliers about the policy,” an emailed statement read.

Does PwC have Hollywood expectations? After all their accountants Martha Ruiz (L) and Brian Cullinan were chosen to do the final count on the 2016 Oscar ballots.

Standing her ground, Nicola has started an online petition, which has already gained 62,000 signatures.

“I said ‘if you can give me a reason as to why wearing flats would impair me to do my job today, then fair enough,’ but they couldn’t,” she explained to BBC Radio London about why she was so driven to take action.

“I was expected to do a nine-hour shift on my feet escorting clients to meeting rooms. I said I just won’t be able to do that in heels.”

Sadly, this it’s not just us common folk that feel the heat of beauty standards.

One of Hollywood’s most beautiful and talented stars, Penelope Cruz, felt the brunt of a TV attack for her “ugly feet”.

We imagine fashionista Victoria Beckham will be toeing her support for Nicola.

She recently chatted to The Telegraph, explaining that stilettos may be glamorous but they have no practicality.

“I just can’t do heels any more. At least not when I’m working. I travel a lot. Clothes have to be simple and comfortable,” the former platform-wearing popstar admitted.

Double-murder suicide: Man planted car bomb to kill his pregnant wife and sons

A man who killed his pregnant wife and son in a double-murder suicide rigged a bomb intended to wipe out his whole family.

A man who killed his pregnant wife and son in a double-murder suicide car crash also rigged a bomb intended to wipe out his whole family.

Central Coast Gosford Express Advocate reports that a coronial inquest into the deaths of Darren Milne, his pregnant wife Susana Estevez Castillo and their son Liam, 11, revealed Mr Milne had meticulously orchestrated the February 1 2015 crash.

The inquest at Wyong Local Court heard that the 42-year-old father-of-two was an electrical worker who had plotted the murder-suicide for months.

It was alleged that Mr Milne had carefully picked the “heavily wooded” stretch of road between Sydney and the Central Coast and filmed “10 practice runs” on his dash cam just two days before he purposely slammed his Toyota Corolla into a tree on Enterprise Drive, Berkeley Vale, killing his wife and son, and critically injuring his youngest child, Benjamin, who was 7-years-old at the time.

In his evidence leading Senior Constable Peter Mason, of the Forensic Services Group said investigations revealed there was a system of explosives rigged up within the vehicle – including one behind the headlight set to go off on impact – that did not detonate.

Police suggested that Mr Milne planned to kill his family after worrying his two sons, both diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome, would not be accepted in society growing up.

Following the crash Benjamin was rushed to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and placed in an induced coma, with critical head, back and internal injuries.

It is believed the orphaned boy has made strides in his recovery and has been taken in by his aunt’s family on his mother’s side.

Tiger Woods’ ex-wife and ex-girlfriend avoid an awkward run in

Tiger’s ex-wife Elin Nordegren and his former girlfriend Lindsey Vonn were reportedly kept apart at the Kentucky Derby.

Golf pro and love rat Tiger Woods has certainly amassed a convoluted web of women over the years, so it’s no surprise that on occasion there could be some overlap at the same event.

Take this weekend’s Kentucky Derby for example, where Tiger’s ex-wife, Elin Nordegren and his former girlfriend, Lindsey Vonn were kept apart, reports Page Six.

Spies at the event said organisers were told not sit the two blondes near each other, most likely to avoid an uncomfortable atmosphere.

“The staff was being told over a walkie-talkie that Lindsey was on her way over and must be put in a different area from Elin,” a source told Page Six. “They were very clear about that.”

Nordegren, a former Swedish model, ended her marriage to the golf pro in 2010 when multiple cheating claims surfaced.

Vonn, an Olympic skier, then dated Woods between March 2013 and May 2015, and had reportedly got on well with Tiger’s children, daughter Sam and son Charlie, whom he shares with Elin.

If there was deliberate separation at the weekend’s event a rep for Vonn said that the orders didn’t come from Vonn, adding the two women are on “great terms”.

Nordegren, 36, reportedly took a golf club to Woods after discovering his cheating habits and after they separated she gave an interview to PEOPLE where she said that ‘the word betrayal isn’t strong enough’ when discussing the golfing great’s infidelity.

Following their split, Elin received a whopping $100m divorce settlement.

Johnny Depp mocks that awkward apology video to Australia

Johnny Depp has poked fun at the video apology he and Amber Heard were forced to make after their dogs were illegally smuggled into Australia.

We could have guessed that Johnny Depp wasn’t actually sincere in his apology video to Australia but the actor has now left no doubt about his real feelings during a recent public appearance.

Depp was on stage with director Tim Burton and Australian actress Mia Wasikowska during an Alice Through the Looking Glass press conference in the U.K. at the weekend when he made fun of the whole dog-gate debarchle.

“I’m going to do this everywhere I go,” Depp quipped. “I would really like to apologise for not smuggling my dogs into England because it would have been a bad thing to do.”

In April Depp, 52, and his wife Amber Heard were forced to apologise to the people of Australia for illegally smuggling their dogs, Pistol and Boo, into the country.

The A-list couple escaped a possible jail sentence by recording a message advising travellers to respect Australia’s strict quarantine laws.

Would you donate your child’s organs?

When two-year-old Christopher was tragically killed in a car crash last month, his parents made the heart wrenching decision to donate his eyes to a stranger who needed them. Could you do the same?

Two-year-old Christopher Robertson had beautiful brown eyes. He also had an infectious smile and like other kids his age, he longed to be a super hero. And, in a tragic twist, he got his wish.

Last month Christopher was killed in a horrific car crash in Granville, Western Sydney. He was sitting in his stroller when a car mounted the pavement and crushed the stroller into the wall of an apartment building.

Despite tireless efforts from emergency services, Christopher died the next day at Westmead Children’s Hospital.

But in the spirit of Christopher’s inner super hero, his parents made the gut-wrenching decision to donate his beautiful brown eyes to a stranger who needed them.

“We are just glad he could donate his eyes so he could help another,” Christopher’s father, James Robertson told the Daily Telegraph.

Although Australia is a world leader in organ and tissue donation success rates, organ donation remains a confronting topic. Especially when it comes to donating organs and tissue from children.

38 year-old Jon Seccull understands the complexities around this issue more than he would like to.

In 2011, Jon’s three-year-old son Ethan was struck by a passenger train. Like other kids his age, Ethan was a keen climber and had scaled the back fence of the family’s Ballarat home so he could wave at the passing trains.

Ethan’s mum, 35-year-old Michelle was able to revive him at the scene, but it was obvious that he was in a very serious condition.

The youngster was flown to the Royal Children’s hospital in Melbourne where surgeons did all they could for him. Sadly, the brain damage Ethan sustained was too great to recover from.

The Seccull family then faced the heartbreak of saying goodbye to their little boy. Jon told The Weekly Online that it was very confronting to see Ethan on life support.

“He was our perfect little three-year-old to cuddle and kiss, he had lips to kiss and hands to hold,” he recalls.

The seccull’s were able to spend time with Ethan and even had the chance to bring their other children into the hospital to say goodbye to their brother.

The topic of organ donation didn’t come up until Jon and Michelle were alone with Ethan.

“We were bargaining with every worldly possession that we own, wanting a miracle and wanting Ethan to survive – and we knew there were other families in the same position – praying for that miracle,” he recalls.

When the couple discussed the idea they both agreed that if an organ donor could save Ethan they would gladly accept the gift of life.

“We thought it would be awfully selfish to take it, but not be prepared to give it,” says Jon.

The Seccull’s discussed their decision with the hospital who explained the organ donation legislation and logistics.

Armed with all of the information they needed the Seccull’s decided to continue with their plan to donate Ethan’s organs. His life support was switched off later that day.

“He’d fought so hard, but he’d admitted defeat – he didn’t even take a breath,” remembers Jon.

“The hardest part was walking out of the hospital without him.”

Ethan “Jimmy” Seccull

The Seccull’s heart wrenching decision led to life saving surgery for three people – an adult male and two young children.

“It is very humbling to know that our little boy has touched three people’s lives in the way that he has.

Jon says that he is confident that if Ethan had been old enough to understand what he was doing he would have given his full consent.

“Ethan was the type of kid that shared everything that he had, he was the type of kid that would run around the room sharing biscuits or chips, and it never bothered him if there were none left,” says Jon.

Since Ethan’s death, Jon and Michelle have established the Ethan ‘Jimmy’ Seccull Foundation, working closely with the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority, the purpose of the foundation is to promote organ and tissue donation.

“We use Ethan’s story to help amplify the key messages. Particularly in regards to paediatric donation,” explains Jon.

Jon hopes that as time goes on organ and tissue donation become less taboo. “It should just be something that we do as a society,” he says.

While it is a difficult and confronting conversation, Jon thinks that parents should discuss organ and tissue donation so that if the worst happens they will both be on the same page.

“You discuss schooling, what sport they’re going to play, we talk about whether or not they’ll have braces, so why shouldn’t we talk about organ donation?

“Of course no one wants to go through it – but the reality is that it does happen,” he says.

“We take great comfort in knowing that there are three people alive because of Ethan. His legacy and gift lives on.”

Sally Faulkner’s nightmare amplifies the agony of hundreds of parents separated from their children

Sally Faulkner has penned an open letter vowing to bring her children home to Australia. Here, The Weekly Online speaks to another mum in Sally's position.

Sally Faulkner is a woman on a mission. It’s been nearly three weeks since she returned to Australia after the attempted retrieval of her children ended in jail time. And while the drama around the involvement of 60 Minutes has faded, Sally’s resolve to be reunited with her children has not.

In an open letter published on Mamamia, Sally says that her fight to get her children back has been the hardest struggle of her life. “I struggled to keep my heavy heart above my drowning tears,” she writes.

Speaking of the failed attempt to reclaim her son and daughter, Sally says: “As a mother I’d do anything for my children – anything! Just like you reading this now. You’d move heaven and earth to make sure your child felt loved and secure and needed.”

Sally has vowed to carry on fighting to get her children back. “I guarantee you one thing. I will bring my children home and they will know that both Mummy and Daddy love them, because both parents are important and parental alienation is child abuse,” she says.

While Sally’s situation may seem shocking, cases of children being separated from one of their parents are scarily common. The anguish that Sally must be experiencing now is something that thousands of parents in similar situations will relate to.

Sarah is a 35-year-old mother-of-three from Sydney. Sadly, she hasn’t seen her children since the end of 2015 when she left them with their British father in the UK.

The plan had been that they would enjoy a family holiday with their dad and his relatives, and he would return them to their home in time for the new school year. But while she trusted her ex-husband, he wasn’t true to his word.

Sarah with her three children

“When I found out their Dad wasn’t going to return them to me as we had always agreed, I collapsed. My body couldn’t hold me up anymore. It felt like my heart stopped and I couldn’t breathe. I have been living every day in a state of disbelief and shock,” she says.

Months later, Sarah is still living without her children. Although Sarah has the law on her side, the nature of family disputes like this are very complex and take time to resolve. In the meantime, she faces the daily agony of living without her children.

“As a mother having no control or say over your children’s lives is just unthinkable. To have brought your children up and loved and cared for every aspect of their lives and then to have all that taken away leaves you untethered. It feels like your life is in free fall,” she says.

Although Sarah’s children are on the other side of the world, she does have regular contact with them. Conversations are bitter-sweet – she enjoys hearing their voices, but she is conflicted by the questions they ask.

“I have always promised that I would be there for them no matter what. That mummy will always tell them the truth and that they can ask me everything and anything without fear or judgement. Now I have the horrendous and heart-wrenching task of having to tell them what no one wants to hear ‘I don’t know sweetheart, “ she says.

“For now I have to settle with telling them I love them with my whole heart. That I love them to the moon and back. To Australia and back. That they are the stars in my sky and sun in my day and when I see them in June I will hug them until my heart stops hurting.”

Prince George embarrassed Prince Harry in front of the Obamas

Cheeky little Prince George called out his Uncle Harry for being uncharacteristically well-behaved when the Obamas came to visit.
Prince Harry Barack Obama Michelle Obama

Little Prince George may just be a two-year-old, but the little tyke certainly doesn’t miss a trick!

In a candid two-on-one interview in which the US First Lady, Michelle Obama, and Prince Harry sat down with ABC News, the wife of President Obama let slip one very adorable detail about their visit with the royal family.

Turns out, the usually-mischievous Prince was putting on a display of his absolute best behaviour, but that was before his equally cheeky nephew gave him away…

“I have to say the most precious thing, if you haven’t already fallen in love with him, is to see him with his nephew,” said Michelle of Harry, who sat red-faced right next to her.

Watch the sweet moment play out in the video player below! Post continues…

Speaking of the evening in which she and her husband met Harry as well as the Duke and Duchess at their Kensington Palace residence, she quoted Prince George who asked the royal, “Uncle Harry, why are you so quiet? Why are you so quiet?”’

Harry then piped up, calling the moment “so embarrassing”. He explains that George noticed that he was on his “best behaviour” as he is “normally throwing him around the room and stuff.”

“And he didn’t understand what is wrong with you,” the first lady said to Harry. “He’s got a pretty good uncle over here.”

George’s bedtime outfit was jokingly described as a “clear breach of protocol”.

The pint-sized Prince stole the show when the American president and his darling wife dropped by for dinner at the royal’s household in London.

George made headlines when he became the first and likely last person to greet the politician wearing none other than an embroidered robe and slippers – an outfit which has since been jokingly described by the president himself as a “clear breach of protocol”.

Like most garments worn by this royal family, the robe has sold out since its debut on the two-year-old.

George showed off his rocking horse skills as Duchess Catherine proudly clapped him on. The toy was given to George from The Obamas when he was born.

Prince Harry and Michelle Obama have come together with a friendly rivalry, over whether the US or the UK will place first at the Invictus Games for wounded former servicemen.

Parents no longer buying alcohol for their kids

Would you buy booze for your underage teen?

The number of parents buying alcohol for their underage children has nearly halved since 2007, a new study has found.

Researchers from the University of Queensland’s Centre for Youth Substance Abuse Research studied national and drug and alcohol surveys from 1998 to 2013.

In 2007, 22.4 per cent of underage drinkers were given alcohol by their parents. By 2013, that number had nearly halved, falling to 11.8 per cent.

Correspondingly, the number of 14 to 17-year-olds who identify as non-drinkers has doubled, going from 30 per cent in 2001 to 60 per cent in 2013.

The percentage of teens drinking weekly has also dramatically reduced in a similar timeframe. In 2008, one in five adolescents was consuming alcohol weekly, but by 2013 just one in 20 were drinking weekly.

Why such a big change? It’s to do with lifestyle, study leader Adrian Kelly, an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland, says.

“Kids today also have a bit of a healthier culture than previous generations, which naturally results in lower rates of underage drinking,” he told aww.com.au.

“There has been a huge focus on educating adolescents about the risks of alcohol consumption, which has led to less underage drinking and less pressure on parents to supply alcohol.”

Parents have also been the target of government campaigns which have aimed to educate them about the risks of supplying alcohol to young people.

“This has made parents much more aware of the risks, and they’re tightening up,” Kelly said.

Introducing your new favourite superfood: ghee

There’s lemon water, chia seeds and the classic coconut oil that ring to mind as your go-to health miracle workers… But now there is a new kid on the block, ghee!
Kourtney Kardashian

The ingredient, that has been around for centuries and traditionally used in Indian cooking, recently got a superstar endorsement from Kourtney Kardashian.

Learn more about ghee in the video player below! Post continues…

Loading the player...

Ghee is a source of fat which is often made at home by melting unsalted butter until it boils.

During this process, milk solids found in the butter start to separate and are filtered out leaving behind a golden liquid – which this write can confirm is delicious with a bold nutty flavour.

The mother-of-three sung the oil’s praises on a recent blog post.

She explained that she likes to start her day off with a spoonful of the clarified butter.

Kourtney’s morning ritual – a spoonful of ghee.

“Ghee is the first thing I put in my body every morning,” she penned on her website.

“I take one big teaspoon of ghee every morning and melt it on the stove in a pan and drink it out of a cute little ceramic white cup. After I take it, I don’t eat anything for 20 minutes, and then I drink a glass of water before eating food.”

The reality star, who is the best shape of her life since splitting up with baby daddy Scott Disick, seriously believes in the stuff.

“In my kitchen, I only cook with ghee and coconut oil, and try to incorporate it into my meals as much as possible,” Kourtney shared.

“We make French toast, grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, basically anything we can with ghee.”

Kourtney, holding her daughter Penelope, looks phenomenal.

The mum of Mason, six, Penelope, three, and one-year-old Reign also admitted that she likes to “sneak half a teaspoon of melted ghee into my kids’ warm milk because I believe in it so much!”

While there’s no question that the 37-year-old is looking fabulous, is that much ghee actually good for you?

Here are the positives; ghee is so low in dairy that it is virtually lactose free making it a great substitute for those who have intolerance.

Even Kourt’s kids drink the fat.

It also has amazing medicinal benefits which include decreasing inflammation, helping improve the digestive system and you can even use it as an ointment on your skin as a natural remedy for swelling and burns.

Plus it is packed with vitamins A,D,E, and K, and also has K2 and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) antioxidant.

Registered dietitian, Raman Khatar, told the Huffington Post despite all the medicinal factors, you shouldn’t jump into drinking a spoonful of it every morning.

The ingredient has been used for centuries in India.

Instead she recommends, “If you’re having butter on toast or choosing between ghee or another type of fat, then ghee is a great choice because of the benefits it may bring.”

At the end of the day, it is important to remember that ghee is a fat, with a large chunk of it being a saturated fat. In layman’s terms, it is known to raise levels of harmful cholesterol and that is linked to heart disease.

So like all things, it is ALL about moderation.

We might leave the ceramic cup with this Kardashian… and try cooking with ghee instead!
