Sydney’s smokey morning haze

Sydney-siders have woken up coughing and wheezing this morning thanks to 40 controlled hazard reduction burns taking place around the city.

Sydney-siders have woken up coughing and wheezing this morning thanks to 40 controlled hazard reduction burns taking place around the city and as far as the Blue Mountains.

A spokesman for the NSW Rural Fire Service said hundreds of volunteers as well as National Parks employees, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Conditions are good,” he said, adding that the NSWRFS was taking advantage of the fine weather before rain scheduled on Sunday.

The smoke and haze has been so thick over the city that some building’s smoke alarms have been set off.

Earlier this morning the NSW Fire Service tweeted there would be reprieve:

“Smoke has settled due to lower temps overnight. Should clear throughout the morning.”

Just weeks after revealing she was engaged to Rob, the 27-year-old announced that she is pregnant with her second child.

Both Rob and Blac shared the news within minutes of each other via Instagram, using an emoji of Blac rubbing her baby bump.

The baby news follows their April engagement, where Blac shared a photo of herself wearing a massive diamond ring with the caption, “YES!…!…!”

According to People, the couple originally intended to announce the news on Mother’s Day.

“She would have preferred to have announced it on Mother’s Day herself,” a rep for the model explained, “but her hand was forced.”

Following their engagment

When it comes to why her future in-laws may have jumped the gun, the rep adding, “It’s the business. There’s a TV show to promote.”

But it seems the mum-to-be is still loving her impending pregnancy.

“She’s very happy and doing great. She hasn’t had morning sickness. It’s been a very easy pregnancy thus far.”

While none of the Kardashian clan have commented on the new addition to their family, Blac’s BFF Amber Rose took to Instagram to congratulate the duo on their future nuptials.

“Congratulations to my family. Please don’t let nothing or no one tear you guys apart! I never seen my sis so happy and I couldn’t be more happy for her! Sometimes we find love in the strangest places.”

Before concluding, “God bless you 2! Now let’s get this wedding together so y’all can start making some babies #truelove #putaringonitsoyouknowitsreal.”

Rob and Blac, who was previously engaged to Kylie’s boyfriend Tyga, with whom she has a 3-year-old son, King Cairo, began their whirlwind romance in January.

Now a wedding AND a baby on the way… We’re not sure how much more we’ll be able to keep up with.

Man bursts into tears when caught trying to meet 13yo girl

A man accused of trying to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex was caught and confronted by a group of ‘paedophile hunters’.

A man accused of trying to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex was caught and confronted by a group of ‘paedophile hunters’.

Three members of the group cornered the 30-year-old man inside a shopping centre in Kent, England, who then burst into tears when accused of “being here today to meet a 13-year-old girl for the purpose of sex.”

The encounter was filmed by the men – who choose to remain anonymous – and posted onto YouTube. They then showed him screen grabs of an alleged conversation with the young girl, telling the man that he’d be arrested and his house searched, before police arrived.

Kent Police confirmed a man in the area was arrested and his house to be searched. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

The ‘vigilantes’ seem to be acting outside of the law, trying to catch the paeophile predators by themselves. One of the men pretends to be a teen girl, then saves chat logs and hands them over to police.

However, Detective Inspector Robert Chitham of the Paedophile Online Investigation Team at Kent Police said that the public shouldn’t take part in this behaviour as it’s highly dangerous.

“I would discourage people from taking the law into their own hands to avoid them being put in any possible danger,” he said.

“Revealing the identity of suspected paedophiles, often on the basis of little information, could lead to suspects being threatened.”

“This can divert significant police resources into protecting suspects, which would be better invested in investigating and, where there is evidence, prosecuting them.”

Julia Morris: “There’s no such thing as a work-life balance”

Comedian and actress Julia Morris tells The Weekly Online that sometimes she doesn’t want to spend time with her kids and husband, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Julia Morris is a busy woman. She’s an award-winning actress on House Husbands (which is soon starting filming of its fifth season), a host of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, and a successful and damn hilarious comedian.

She also has two girls, Ruby and Sophie, with her husband, fellow comedian Dan Thomas.

Free time is a rarity for her, and she’s not afraid to admit that on the odd occasion she does have some moments to spare, she doesn’t necessarily want to spend it with her kids and husband.

“You can try and create extra time for yourself but it doesn’t mean that I want to spend it with my husband and children,” she tells The Weekly Online.

“The one thing that never gets seen to is time just for mum. I know I get to be myself when I’m out working but when I’m home, it’s Dan, the girls and I – so when’s that time you actually get to yourself? That’s the sacrifice of looking like you’ve got it all.”

The comedian isn’t one to shy away from saying she needs some Julia time. “I’m blocking the girls at the moment, I’m not feeling guilt for that – I definitely need time for myself.”

She tries to find these child-free moments during the week when the kids are at school, but she admits that when it comes to the weekends, she likes to devote her time to her family.

“If the girls want to do playdates, then [that’s a] triple bonus. But if not and they want to have children at the house, then I feel like the minimum I can do is be present and let that happen.”

So how does a busy working woman like Julia balance it all? Well, she says that fairytale concept just doesn’t exist.

“I love that people keep saying we need to strike that work-life balance but I can absolutely assure you there’s no such thing. I think it’s an advertising catch-phrase.

There’s no point looking for that work-life balance because you’re just going to be dissatisfied in the fact that you can’t find it.”

So what’s the best remedy? “I guess – for want of an overused expression – it’s being in the moment,” she says.

In Julia’s eyes, having this mindset when it’s come to being a mum has made her proud to admit she’s far from perfect. “I don’t have perfection in me. I can try and try but I’m doing so much stuff I’m probably going to get a few of these wrong.”

This, she believes, is the same for all parents – and there’s nothing wrong with that. Because when it comes to parenting, there are no rules. “I think you can just try your best every single day. Who knows what the children are going to take from our lives. I’ll know in my heart at the time that I tried my best,” Julia says.

In a world that is constantly passing us by, Julia sums it up pretty neatly: “Life’s like a treadmill; I’m not really noticing what’s up ahead, I’m just trying to keep up.”

She did give us a few priceless pieces of parenting advice though:

1.Apologise to your kids when you need to.

“When we do make mistakes, it’s [about] going to them and saying you know what, I did do that wrong and I’m going to try better next time and I’m sorry I mucked that up. It’s not that often, but it is important as an adult. That’s a big lesson I try to pass on.”

2.Send videos as thank you cards.

“I found a genius revelation for the girls’ birthdays. If someone buys you a birthday present I think the least you can do is say thank you in return. I said to Dan, ‘you know what, as they’re opening the present, let’s video it and then email it saying thank you!’ I reckon that saved us probably a whole Saturday and a Sunday morning of making 20 thank you cards.”

3.When you desperately need some free time on the weekend, the Pyrolytic function on the Westinghouse oven is Julia’s sneaky hack.

“On the weekend, tell the family you’re going to clean the oven and suggest they go out for a few hours to avoid the chemical fumes. Once they leave, just turn on the Pyrolytic function (which cleans the oven for you without any chemicals) and enjoy a cuppa and a magazine on the couch in silence!”

We’ll take that advice, Julia.

Without my mum – how one woman’s grief inspired her to reach out to ‘motherless mothers’ everywhere

Mother's Day can be very hard for mums who have lost their own mother. The Weekly Online spoke to Leigh Van Der Horst, author of Without My Mum to find out more.
Without my mum

Among other things, 40-year-old Leigh Van Der Horst describes herself as a ‘motherless mother’. On the one hand she is the devoted mother of four sons (aged 15, 13, 11, and 4) but on the other, she is bereaved, having lost her own mother in 2008.

The dichotomy between the two is often difficult, but it is particularly poignant on Mother’s Day. “It is a reminder of what we don’t have,” she says.

And, with retailers going into overdrive weeks before the day itself it is hard to think about anything else. Despite having children who want to make the day about her, Leigh says that since her mother passed away she hasn’t enjoyed Mother’s Day.

“You become quite numb to it all over time which I guess is sad for those of us who have children and should enjoy it. But it is exhausting enduring an entire day devoted purely to our mothers,” she says.

Leigh wrote her book Without My Mum in order to reach out to other women who had lost their mothers. “I gained so much strength hearing other stories of women in similar circumstances and I felt that the world needed a book about the topic of losing a mother that was comforting, inspiring and supportive,” she explains.

“I opened up about my experience and was very honest about my feelings throughout the book as I knew it would resonate with so many others.”

Leigh was right and the book did resonate with other ‘motherless’ women. In fact the messages from others became so frequent that Leigh decided to start a closed Facebook group in which people could share their stories and offer each other support.

“There are so many parallels [with my story]. I think the hardest thing we suffer is when our own children are missing out on special time with their Nanna and we see it all around us. That and Mother’s Day, both very hard to deal with,” she says.

The Weekly Online asked Leigh why she thinks that mothering without a mother is especially hard. “It’s not for the babysitting or the cooked meals, it’s the love that comes naturally from a mother in a good relationship with her daughter.

“It’s the loss of a great love. I read somewhere that we needed to remember that our mothers are our first true loves and that’s why the impact of their death is so devastating. As a mother myself, I went to my mum so much for advice and she was spot on, every time. I no longer have that guide,” she says.

For women who are missing their own mothers this Mother’s Day, Leigh’s advice is to talk about it. “Find a grief councillor, or a psychologist. Someone that you feel comfortable with and then let it all out. The only way to heal is to acknowledge the pain, allow it to rise, then fall and then move forward,” she says.

Leigh also notes that grief doesn’t have a time limit. “It can go on and on. You do gain strength over time and you do open your heart to love and life again,” she says.

“It is not the end of the world, although it may feel as though it is.”

‘Selfless’ Keelen Mailman named Barnardos Mother of the year

Now in its 21st year, the Barnardos Mother of the year awards are the largest and most recognised of their kind that celebrate mothering.

14 years ago, Barnardos Mother of the Year Keelen Mailman, opened her home (and her heart) to then 9-year-old Fay Anderson and her four brothers and sisters who were desperate for a loving home after years of neglect and abuse.

Yesterday, Anderson got the chance to thank her ‘Aunty Kay’, when she introduced her guardian at the annual awards.

“I didn’t want to live on this earth anymore. I was being physically and emotionally abused by someone who was supposed to love and care for me, let down time and time again by my parents. She was my chance, my Aunty Kay. I wish I could give her the world,” she said.

The audience then heard how Mailman had to rise above childhood trauma that was characterised by sexual abuse and poverty to become the primary carer for her incapacitated mum at 12-years-old, after she’d suffered a severe stroke.

Mailman drew on this same selfless strength when she successfully represented herself in court to obtain full guardianship of her nieces and nephews, offering the same unconditional love and support to her new “kids” that she showed her three biological children.

On top of this, Mailman was also running a cattle station 700 kilometres west of Brisbane, for which she became the first Aboriginal woman to do so.

But as she told the Huffington Post, she isn’t one for fuss and bother. “It’s hard for me to talk about without getting emotional. I must have done something right to touch my niece’s life so much,” she said while reflecting on her niece’s decision to nominate her.

Now in its 21st year, the Barnardos Mother of the year awards are the largest and most recognised of their kind that celebrate mothering.

Mailman told the audience at the Museum of Contemporary Art that all of her kids have now grown up and moved out of home, but she’s still as busy as ever.

In fact, Mailman’s dedication to improving the lives of others continues in the form of a community project that she is working on with Indigenous health advocate Sheryl Lawton, which will see plans for a healing centre for young men and women.

“We’ve got to look out for the younger generation, there’s enough to give a little to everyone and we want to share our Bidjara culture with the rest of the world,” she said.

8 foods you shouldn’t keep in the fridge (but probably still do)

How many of these food sins are you committing?

Fresh herbs

Although it might make sense to store your herbs like basil, mint and parsley in the fridge to keep them fresh, it actually causes them to wilt much faster. Your herbs will also naturally absorb the odours from food around them – and a banana-flavoured coriander sprig just won’t do.

The best way to keep your herbs is at room temperature, sitting in a vase filled with water, just like flowers. For extra freshness, cover the leaves with damp paper towels or tea towels.

Honey

Sure, it might make sense to store it alongside your jams and butter, but honey has no place in the fridge. The cool air will cause your honey to harden and crystalise, and once this happens – there’s no turning back.

If you want to keep it sweet and runny, keep your jar tightly sealed in your pantry. It should last for several months (if you can wait that long before tucking in).

Bread

If you’ve bought (or made) a big loaf of bread and you know there’s no way you’ll be able to get through it all in a couple of days, it may be tempting to pop it in the fridge to help keep it fresh. However, this usually ends up doing the opposite, drying out the dough and leaving you with a stale sandwich base.

Instead, slice up your bread and freeze it, if you know you won’t eat it right away. Ensure you allow your bread to completely defrost before eating it or toasting it, and it will maintain the same consistency as if it was fresh.

And if you know you’ll polish it off within a few days, keep your bread in the pantry in a tightly sealed plastic bag for up to four days.

Tomatoes

Ever bitten into a fresh tomato, just-picked off the vine, and wondered why it tastes so much better than the ones you bought from the supermarket? The answer? Refrigeration. The cold air in your fridge stops the ripening process, Harold McGee explains in his book On Food And Cooking.

Chilling your tomatoes actually changes their texture, too, as the cold air damages the membranes inside the fruit walls, causing the tomato to lose flavour and develop a crunchy, mealy flesh.

Onions

This is another one that many of us are guilty of – but storing your onions in the fridge causes them to soften and grow mould.

Your best bet is to keep them in a cool, dry place, like your pantry. Store them away from your potatoes, though, as both vegetables deteriorate more rapidly when stored together.

It’s worth noting, other members of the onion family like chives and scallions are still good for the fridge as they are naturally higher in water – just be careful of your Spanish, brown and white onions.

Kumara and potatoes

Your root veggies belong in your fridge with the rest of your vegetables, right? Wrong.

The cool air from your fridge causes your potatoes’ starch to turn into sugar quicker, leaving you with a sweet and gritty vegetable.

Instead, keep your ‘taters in a cool, dark place like a root cellar or your pantry. Wrap them in a paper bag to keep the potatoes fresh, while allowing them to breathe.

Avocados

If you purchase an avocado slightly under-ripe with the hope of using it in a couple of days time, avoid chilling it at all costs. The cold air will stop the ripening process and cause this (usually) creamy fruit to became firm and unworkable.

On a more positive note, if your avo has reached ultimate ripeness – you can keep it in the fridge for a few days to keep it in tip-top condition until you want to use it.

Garlic

It’s the sure-fire way to add major flavour to any of your savoury dishes, but garlic should always be kept out of the fridge. The cool air will cause the bulbs to grow sprouts and form mould. You’re also at risk of your garlic cloves becoming rubbery if you refrigerate it.

Instead, keep it in the pantry with your onions, either in a paper or plastic bag.

Belle Gibson facing $1 million in fines over cancer scam

Disgraced ‘wellness’ blogger Belle Gibson is facing huge penalties for making money off her fake cancer claims and defrauding charities.

Belle Gibson, the woman who lied about healing her terminal cancer with wholefoods, is now facing more than $1 million in penalties for making for money off her fake claims.

The 24-year-old blogger was hugely successful with her global health scam before her web of lies finally came undone.

She gave hope to seriously ill people that wholefoods would ultimately cure them and tricked multinational companies like Apple and Penguin into believing it too.

After The Weekly spoke to her last year to hear her entire con story, she has since gone into hiding.

But now, the disgraced ‘wellness’ blogger has had legal proceedings launched against her in Federal Court by Consumer Affairs Victoria, according to The Age.

This could lead to prosecution against her company for her false claims of beating terminally ill cancer by not using conventional medicine, and also the unlawful fundraising of her company in 2013 and 2014.

Penguin Publishing is also being fined $30,000 for not fact-checking her story before printing her book The Whole Pantry, and will also have to include “prominent warning notice” on future books about natural therapies.

Belle’s company Belle Gibson Pty Ltd is currently in liquidation. It owes almost $140,000 which included $83,500 in tax to go to the federal government.

After deleting much of her online presence in the wake of the scandal, Belle Gibson appeared to quietly return to social media late last year, using a pseudonym “Harry Gibson” on Facebook.

Posts seen by The Weekly Online suggest she was still in a relationship with her partner Clive Rothwell, an IT worker. A profile photo appeared to show the two of them in a playful embrace.

Facebook posts also indicated Belle had moved home and was travelling to Adelaide, South Australia, with Clive and her young son Ollie over Christmas. Her son was “excited to be going to see nanny”, it said.

It’s possible they were reunited with her estranged mother Natalie Del-Ballo, who was based in South Australia. Last year, Ms Del-Ballo publicly condemned her daughter’s actions and said she “was deeply upset and incredibly hurt” by her behaviour in an interview with The Weekly.

However, following Belle’s later interview with 60 Minutes, her stance appeared to have softened and defended her daughter, portraying her as having told “a white lie”.

Under the latest Herry Gibson Facebook profile, there were also photographs of the family, as well as a photo of “healthy” brownies or biscuits that had apparently been made without sugar for her son and his friends.

The Whole Pantry included many recipes for wholefood-based recipes, including sugar-free biscuits and baked goods. Her book, published by Penguin, included a section at the beginning on her cancer claims.

Elsewhere there were posts in support of refugees and new technology.
