The Queen sheds tears for fallen soldiers

Rarely has she ever cried in the public eye, but on Tuesday, her Majesty was overcome with emotion as she unveiled a memorial for Britain’s lost soldiers.
Queen Elizabeth II

It was a rare and touching sight.

Britain’s longest serving monarch, who so rarely lets her emotions show during public appearances, let her guard down for one swift moment at a royal engagement in Staffordshire, England this week.

The 90-year-old had just returned to her seat after unveiling a bronze lion statue in memory of the 32 members of the regiment who have died since its formation in 2006.

Over 250 guests watched as the monarch allowed tears to roll down her cheek, including the families of the fallen as well as several soldiers that had been severely injured in Afghanistan.

The usually-stoic Queen was overcome with emotion.

Swiftly, she wiped away her tears with a gloved hand.

According to onlookers present, the royal took a few moments to “regain her composure” following the emotional outburst.

She wiped her cheeks with a gloved hand and went on to lay a wreath beside the monument.

It read, “In memory of the glorious dead. Elizabeth R.”

Following the service, Queen Elizabeth II seemed to be in good spirits as she chatted to guests, including war veterans and their families.

Speaking to stonemason Nick Johnson and sculptor Georgie Welch – the creatives responsible for the stunning sculpture – the Queen complimented them on their work and dedication.

“The Queen said it was very lifelike and that it had a real look of power. She also said it looked fearless. I was so nervous I couldn’t stop my knees shaking, but the Queen was absolutely charming,” said Georgie after their encounter.

“I don’t think you can get any higher honour than to meet the Queen,” quipped Nick in response.

The Queen laid a wreath for the fallen soldiers.

The usually-stoic monarch has only ever wept on a handful of occasions throughout her 64-year reign.

A tear famously rolled down her cheek in 1997 at the decommission ceremony for the Royal Yacht Britannia.

The Queen had shared over 40 years of memories on the vessel with Prince Philip before it was deemed too expensive to maintain at a cost of $21 million a year.

A second tear left her eyes in 2002 at a Remembrance Day service, just months after her mother’s death.

Air travel deemed her beloved Royal Yacht Britannia redundant.

Her Majesty was joined by wounded soldiers for a service that honoured those killed while serving in the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.

At the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, the Queen wiped away tears during the emotional service and laid a wreath that read the message: ‘In memory of the glorious dead. Elizabeth R’.

The Queen laid this wreath at the memorial

It is believed the only other time she has cried in public was in 1997 when the Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned.

While at the ceremony, she unveiled a bronze lion memorial, which is heralded the ‘Lion of England’. This is to commemorate the 32 who gave their lives serving in the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment since it formed.

Paramedic stole Rolex from dying Sopranos star

A paramedic has been accused of stealing a Rolex from Sopranos star James Gandolfini in his final hours.

The Telegraph UK reports the Italian paramedic has gone on trial, accused of stealing the Rolex from Gandolfini’s wrist as he lay dying in a Rome hotel following a heart attack.

Claudio Bevilacqua, an ambulance stretcher-bearer, was part of the team who rushed to the Boscolo Exedra Hotel in the Italian capital in June 2013.

The 43-year-old is accused of taking the $4000 Submariner watch.

Two members of the hotel’s security staff reportedly noticed the watch was missing and it was reported as stolen on an insurance form filed by Gandolfini’s family.

Bevilacqua did not attend the start of the trial earlier this week and has not entered a plea.

His trial has been adjourned until November.

Brad and Tallena’s reality TV journey has certainly been a rocky one. For weeks, it looked as though the show would be the end of them.

Brad eventually penned a letter breaking up with Tallena after it was revealed she had shared a spa and a bed with her experimental partner, and got a matching tattoo with him.

But the show’s therapy eventually seemed to work, helping them get their romance back on track, leading to Brad’s proposal last night.

Viewers were divided over the unique situation

Brad also controversially gifted Tallena with a new cheque to help pay for their wedding, after he tore up a previous cheque meant for the same purpose.

“I know we have a lot of work to do but I don’t ever want to be without you and I want to be as happy as we once were,” he said.

Woman’s Day recently revealed the couple tied the knot earlier this month in Queensland, surrounded by family and friends.

America’s sweetheart Cameron Diaz has revealed she believed that she’d never get married after she hit the age of 40.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the actress was asked what’s something new that she’d tried in recent years that took her by surprise. Her answer? Marriage to her now-husband Benji Madden.

“I got married last year,” the 43-year-old shared with the magazine. “That was the biggest thing I’ve done in my 40s, and it opened me up in different ways.

“It’s pretty awesome,” the bubbly blonde continues. “I didn’t think it was something I’d do, and I don’t know if I’d have done it if I hadn’t met my husband. It was a surprise.”

Cameron said she may never have married if she hadn’t met Benji.

The pair met just a few months before they got hitched in January 2015.

She says when she first met her hubby to be, she thought he was “super hot”.

“It was one of those things where everyone tells you, “You just know when you know,’” she said. “I was like, ‘What does that mean? Oh, I get it! You just know when you know!’ Like, ‘You’re my husband.’”

The actress is attending interviews and signings to promote her new book.

And while the star has dated a slew of other men before she wed (including Justin Timberlake and Jared Leto), she says they all faded into nothing when she met The One.

“Nothing matters now that I have my husband,” Cameron said in a recent interview. “I don’t even remember any of that. “That’s how I know he’s my husband, because no one compares.”

Cam chats about making the most of her 40s. Post continues below.*

The actor has been out and about to promote her new book The Longevity Book, a tome about the art of growing older that offers steps women can take to maintain their health and resilience as they age.

She told Harper’s Bazaar that since she hit her 40s, she’s shocked by how her body has changed.

“Your body changes in so many little ways. It doesn’t react the way it used to,” she confesses. “I didn’t get the results that I used to as easily as I once did. Now I look at myself and realise, ‘Oh right, I’m in this time now in my life where I have to be thoughtful. If I slack off, things don’t come back so easily. I have to be committed.’”

A thief who stole a wedding ring from the finger of an elderly dementia sufferer’s hand has been jailed for nearly 10 years.

Once inside, Hollingworth, who was drunk and on drugs, he asked to used the bathroom but instead ransacked Swale’s bedroom, the Hull Daily Mail reports.

He then returned downstairs, where security cameras installed by Swale’s son recorded him tackling her to the ground and ripping the rings off her hands, including the gold wedding ring she had worn for 48 years.

Celine Dion’s last words to her husband

Celine Dion has finally revealed her private pain at the loss of her husband, Rene Angelil.
Celine Dion Rene Angelil

In heartbreaking interviews in the US, the singer spoke out about how she lost her soulmate when Rene passed away, and how she’s coping day-by-day.

“Rene always insisted the show must go on,” she told People magazine. “You know what, I’m 48 years old and I lost the love of my life. I miss him a lot from when he was great, but not when he was suffering. I cannot be selfish. You have to let people go.”

“I feel at peace.”

The mother-of-three also told of how she used a family favourite Disney movie, Up, to break the news of their father’s death to her kids.

“Before I told them that their dad was not there, I talked about when we, everybody, gets sick. Then I said, ‘Do you remember the movie Up?'” She said of the 2009 Disney feature length animation to ABC News.

“‘Oh,’ they said, ‘Yes, Ellie went up. You know, she, with the balloons.’ And I said, ‘Well, yeah. You know, today Papa went up.’”

Celine gave an emotional interview to ABC News about life after her husband’s death.

The Canadian songstress explained that whenever she heard her children refer to where their father had gone, she wanted to hear them say “up”.

Up is good. Up is uplifting,” she explained.

She then took the children outside for a private family ceremony that involved sprinkling “pixie dust” and releasing balloons up into the sky.

“We’re gonna say ‘Papa we love you. Have a good up’ and we’re gonna spread this and it’s gonna go to him,” she remembers telling them.

The singer put her career on hold to be a carer for Rene before he passed away.

Rene performed the role of manager as well as doting husband for Celine, and the 48-year-old put her career on hold three times to care for him through three different bouts of cancer.

At one point they believed they had removed the tumours that were making him so ill, but the disease returned aggressively in 2014.

She recalls finally telling him he didn’t have to worry about her or anything else anymore as her last words to him before he passed.

“You were worrying for my career. You were worrying for the children. You were worrying for everything. It’s enough. Do you trust me? Please do. Trust me,” she recalled saying to the 73-year-old.

“It’s been a long, long journey,” the iconic artist confessed to ABC of the process of caring for her husband, whose cancer first appeared in 1999.

“We were living in hope, knowing that there’s no hope.”

Rene is survived by Celine and his three children René-Charles, 15, and five-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy.

“I really, really just want to prove to my kids their mother is strong,” she said.
