Today’s supermarket hullabaloo

It hasn't been a good week for Aldi, Coles and Woolworths. With Aldi’s controversial pledge to end caged eggs and outrage over Coles and Woolies slashed milk prices, these are the issues on our radar.

It’s been a big week for Australian supermarkets, and we wouldn’t necessarily say it’s been a good one. Coles, Aldi and Woolworths have all been under fire by passionate and vocal Australians who demand change – they want to stop cage eggs now and support Australian dairy farmers by boycotting supermarket branded milk.

These are the stories amongst the big three supermarkets that we couldn’t stop talking about this week.

Aldi’s controversial pledge to end caged eggs

Supermarket Aldi have made the pledge to stop selling cage eggs… but not till 2025. Nine years away.

The move came after a brave and passionate 14-year-old Angelina Popovski started a petition to stop selling inhumane cage eggs so that Aldi Australia could match what their US and Europe counterparts are doing.

Close to 100,000 signatures were on the petition and spurred Aldi Australia CEO Tom Daunt to make change.

Many on social media have been outraged that it’s taking them so long to roll out the changes.

Aldi responded to one comment explaining the long timeline, saying that it’s “due to limited amount of infrastructure to support cage-free only industry.”

Coles and Woolworths feeling the heat over discounted milk

Shoppers are continuing to revolt against cheap supermarket branded milk, even as Woolworths slash prices again to a staggering low of 50c for 2 litres.

A photo was posted on Facebook from Woolworths’ Redlands store (near Brisbane) showing the shocking price. Lisa Rowntree said on the Woolworths Facebook page: “Hey Woolies people, can you tell me which stores are selling milk for $0.50 for 2 litres? You should be ashamed of yourselves. ‪#‎Shame‬.”

Woolworths’ responded with: “Hey Lisa, due to the close expiry date, these items are being sold at $0.50 to clear the unused stock.”

Coles and Woolworths have been accused of exacerbating the pressure on dairy farmers by cutting their own milk prices.

There has been a massive surge of support over the current milk crisis, with people wanting to support Aussie dairy farmers by choosing not to buy supermarket branded $1/litre milk. The higher retail price of dairy farmers milk means more money goes to them.

Support has been so big that customer calls to Aussie Farmers Direct has jumped nearly 40 per cent over the past week and website traffic has doubled, as more shoppers are seeking out ways they can do the right thing by dairy farmers.

On Wednesday, Agriculture Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce announced that all farmers affected by the unexpected slash of prices would receive a $555 million concessional loan package. He told The Australian “The momentum is there nationally for farmers to get a fairer deal, $1 litre milk that is cheaper than bottled water is not fair.”

Greens leader Richard Di Natale showed his support on Wednesday night, saying: “We cannot continue to have a sustainable dairy industry while Coles and Woolies are ripping off dairy farmers.”

While the slash of prices from these supermarkets are still continuing, these are the milk brands you can buy to help the community:

Here’s how you can spend a night in Princess Diana’s childhood home

That is, if you have a spare $55,000!
Princess Diana

The childhood home, or rather castle of Princess Diana, is opening up for overnight stays for the first time ever in a bid to raise money for charity.

Guests will be able to spend the night in Diana’s old bedroom in the 500-year-old Althorp estate in Northamptonshire, where she resided before her marriage to Prince Charles in 1996.

Located just 70 miles from bustling London, the 90-room manor situated on the 13,000-acree estate boasts around 30 bedrooms and multiple dining rooms, one of which is modelled after the 100-seat ballroom at Buckingham Palace.

But while it all sounds rather incredible to live like a princess for an evening, you can be sure that your short stay comes at a royal price.

A weekend stay at Althorp will cost a couple just under $55,000 or $355,000 for a party of 18.

Diana resided in Althorp until her marriage to Prince Charles.

In a recent interview with NBC’s News On Assignment, Earl Charles Spencer, who currently owns the estate that has been with his family for 18 generations, announced the news alongside his American wife, Countess Karen.

“We are launching a campaign to raise funds for Whole Child where we are going to open the home, open Althorp, to raise funds,” Lady Spencer said to journalist Cynthia McFadden.

The house boasts over 90 rooms, 19 of which are open to the public.

Although the countess came up with the idea, Earl Charles Spencer whole-heartedly agreed.

“But I was instantly on board,” he added. “I’ve always thought of this house as contributing. It’s not just a little bastion or fortress of privilege.”

Well that happened.

Scroll down for video

Controversial Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie didn’t hold back during an interview on ABC’s Kitchen Cabinet on Thursday night.

Speaking to host and author of The Wife Drought Annabel Crabb, Lambie said she has been eager to jump out of her parliamentary seat and take on some of her peers.

“Who would be your first victim do you reckon?” asks Crabb.

“Bernardi,” spat Lambie without hesitation.

“He’s just an arsehole… Typical ‘Hello, I’m born with a silver spoon up my rear end’.”

“I really hate that sort of attitude.”

Lambie has strong opinions about some of her political peers, including Cory Berardi

Elected as a member of the Palmer United Party, Lambie is now an independent, focused on veteran’s rights, Tasmanian jobs and national security.

This isn’t the first time Lambie has voiced strong opinions about some of her political peers. In an interview with The Weekly in 2014, Lambie described then Prime Minister Tony Abbott as having ‘no guts’ and ‘no balls’.

“Females scare the crap out of him [Tony Abbott] but he’s going to have to grow a pair because he has to deal with me,” she said at the time.

Paramedics were called to check on the little boy’s welfare and he was taken to Bankstown Hospital as a precaution.

Suri Cruise has been secretly calling dad Tom Cruise

And mum Katie Homes apparently has no idea…
Suri Cruise has been secretly calling dad Tom Cruise

Uh oh, Suri Cruise might be in a bit of trouble with her mum!

The pint-sized princess has been apparently making calls and texts to her dad Tom Cruise whenever Katie isn’t around.

Suri was spotted outside her school earlier this month making a call, and a source told Star magazine that it was Tom on the other end of the line.

“Suri has been talking to Tom behind Katie’s back. He looks forward to her texts,” an insider told the magazine. “For Tom, [the whole situation] has been very emotional.”

The 10-year-old is reportedly not allowed to speak to her father publicly because of his position in the Scientology community.

And sources say if Katie found out, she’d be furious.

“Katie is very concerned about Suri being brainwashed; that’s why she wanted to monitor every conversation,” the source explains.

“She’s well aware of how powerful Scientology is and she doesn’t want Tom luring Suri away from her. It’s a constant fear,” the insider adds.

“It’s not surprising that Suri is confused by the lack of communication between her parents,” the source confessed to Star.

“She’s growing up, asking more questions and it’s becoming harder to shield her from the whispers. She wants to speak to her dad.”

It’s unknown when Tom and Suri last saw each other. While her relationship with her father remains the subject of much intrigue, in 2008 Tom proudly told Oprah Suri was the centre of his universe.

This story originally appeared on Woman’s Day.

Seven Year Switch’s Michelle: My battle with postnatal depression

Seven Year Switch star Michelle has told of her battle with postnatal depression, explaining it contributed to the collapse of her relationship with Jason.

The pair ended their relationship on Monday’s reunion episode after giving the show a crack when it was revealed they hadn’t had sex for 17 months.

Scroll down for video

“I was drowning in my need to be the best mother ever,” she told mamamia.

“My relationship with Jason was under massive strain, I had changed.”

“I wasn’t myself and I couldn’t even bare to have sex, even if I wasn’t so tired, I just couldn’t.”

On the reunion episode, she confessed they both tried to “put all the things we learned [from the show] into practise” but they decided to end their engagement.

“It got to the stage where we looked at each other and we couldn’t try anymore. We were just suffering each other’s pressure.”

After 12 months of “feeling like a terrible mother and partner,” she visited her doctor who diagnosed with Post Natal Depression.

“This was a real shock to me; I thought PND was when you don’t connect with your baby. But in reality, there is so much more.”

She began seeing a psychiatrist and slowly, things with Jason seemed to get back on track.

However, after the birth of their second child, a combination of post-birth complications and money problems, she felt the grasp of PND creeping up again.

“So, the girl you see on Seven Year Switch is me at my worst, my darkest. It’s a woman losing her battle with PND. It’s a woman who is lost and feeling alone. It’s a woman that some days just wanted to run away.”
