Gorilla mum facing criminal charges

The mother might be charged with child neglect for allowing her son to fall into the gorilla’s enclosure.

Police are considering neglect charges against the parents of the child who fell into Cincinnati Zoo’s gorilla enclosure.

The Cincinnati Police Department has reportedly reopened its investigation into the incident which saw rare male gorilla Harambe shot dead after a four-year-old child fell into his enclosure.

Police initially dismissed the idea of charging the boy’s parents but are now reconsidering possible criminal charges, ABC News reports.

“The incident at the Cincinnati Zoo involving the young child who fell into the gorilla enclosure is under investigation by the Cincinnati Police Department,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters said.

“Once their investigation is concluded, they will confer with our office on possible criminal charges.”

Witnesses have reported the child expressed a desire to enter the enclosure before climbing over a one-metre barrier and falling into the moat surrounding the gorilla habitat.

The mother has since taken to Facebook to defend her parenting, saying accidents happen and praising the actions of zoo workers.

The zoo is also facing charges after an animal rights group filed a federal negligence campaign against the zoo.

Khloe Kardashian spotted cosying up to NFL star

The PDA-packed pictures speak for themselves…
Khloe Kardashian Odell Beckham Jr

It would seem that Khloe Kardashian is finally moving on from Lamar Odom following their tumultuous divorce.

The reality star was pictured getting very close to 23-year-old NBA star Odell Beckham Jr. at rapper Drake’s Memorial Day pool party in Hidden Hills over the weekend.

Despite the strict “no photograph” policy at the bash, one fan managed to sneak a few shots on her camera phone of the couple, who were allegedly “making out in a corner” of the party.

The snaps exclusively obtained by TMZ, show a curvaceous Khloe in a tight, beige dress standing in between the legs of the footballer, who sat atop a wooden table.

Other shots show the 31-year-old leaning in close whilst placing her hands on his legs.

So who is her new beau? At just 23 years of age, Odell is an NFL superstar who plays as the wide reciever for the New York Giants.

Click here to check out the images in question.

One Twitter user shared a video of the rumoured couple together at 1 OAK nightclub in Las Vegas on Friday night, where they were both celebrating Scott Disick’s birthday.

“I was mostly surprised by how Khloe and Odell were making out in a corner, oh and Kylie was there too,” said an insider present at the shindig.

“Obviously you couldn’t take pics so that’s why they weren’t so secretive about their relationship. She knew no one was allowed to photograph.”

The stars’ PDA-packed appearance comes just days after the blonde beauty allegedly filed for divorce from ex-husband, Lamar Odom.

New couple alert? Odell Beckham Jr. is an NFL superstar who plays for the New York Giants and is eight years younger than Khloe.

According the new reports, the star cited irreconcilable differences – a reasoning which could very well relate to recent images of Lamar consuming alcohol once more, despite suffering severe organ failure from a near-fatal drug and alcohol related overdose last year.

“He almost died. If that’s not enough to keep him sober, then what is?” A source explained to Entertainment Tonight after images of the basketballer drinking first emerged.

“One thing is so clear; Khloe would never get back with Lamar unless she knew 100 percent that he was maintaining his sobriety, so him drinking again is a huge slap in her face.”

Watch Khloe talk about how she’s holding up through Lamar’s recovery in the video player below.

Glee star dropped from miniseries after child pornography charges

After Mark Salling, who played Puck on popular show Glee, was formally charged for possessing thousands of images depicting child pornography on Friday, he's now being forced out of work.

On Friday, actor Mark Salling, who played Puck on the popular show Glee, was indicted on charges of receiving and possessing child pornography following an investigation by the US Attorney’s Office.

Scroll down for video

He was first arrested over the crime in December but released on bail. Investigators seized from his home a laptop, hard drive and US, all of which contained thousands of images depicting child pornography.

Following this, he has now been dropped from an upcoming action miniseries Gods and Secrets, TMZ reports.

Mark was due to appear alongside Denise Richards, Kellan Lutz, Jane Seymour, Jackson Rathbone, and RJ Mitte (from Breaking Bad).

Mark played Noah ‘Puck’ Puckerman on the Glee

Director Adi Shankar is now “personally” paying for the reshoots and there are already plans to donate a percentage of the film’s profits to an abused children’s charity.

The Gods and Secrets director has since responded to the indictment, according to a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter:

“I hope that Mark finds inner peace … Hopefully some good will come of all of this and I pray that when the dust has settled, the hyper-connectivity of the information age that has brought to light the transgressions of several public figures, will also force us to look within our society to identify and eliminate the root cause of the rape culture we exist in.”

According to the Justice Department, Salling is planning to turn himself in to federal authorities on June 3. He is expected to be arraigned on that date.

He could face five to 20 years in prison if convicted.

A version of this story appeared on Cosmopolitan.

A marriage sabbatical could save your relationship

Could taking a marriage sabbatical revive your relationship? Jacqueline Hellyer asks.
Taking a month off from my marriage saved my relationship

I have a client at the moment who recently took a ‘marriage sabbatical’. At least, that’s what she and her husband called it.

A work sabbatical is traditionally when you take a break from your job to study something else for a while. The idea is that regular work is too full to focus on the study, so you have some time away, and come back to the job both with new and useful knowledge and a fresh spirit.

That’s what this client is doing with her marriage: she’s taking a month off to be away from her husband and all the expectations and pressures she feels (rightly or wrongly) from being in the marriage, in order to have the space to learn more about herself and what she wants and needs in her life and in her marriage.

So, yes, it’s a marriage sabbatical.

I love this term. It’s so much better than ‘trial separation’ or other more onerous terms. It’s calling it for what it is: time out.

These clients, like so many others who seem to have reached a plateau, have been married for over twenty years and are now empty nesters. They’ve had some struggles in recent years, but otherwise life is good – they’re well off, healthy and their careers are thriving. But she’s lost the zing and feeling a bit lost.

I see it mostly in female clients. They can’t see the forest for the trees, meaning they can’t identify their needs from within the marriage. They need a break to see things more clearly.

Not surprisingly, their husbands can find this concept of needing a break as threatening. He’s worried that if she has this level of freedom she won’t come back to him. This is of course one possible outcome. But as the saying goes: “Set the caged bird free, if she comes back, she’s yours, if she doesn’t she’s not.” You have to set her free to find out.

Of course the husbands will argue that she’s not caged. If she’s not, then there should be no problem in her expressing her freedom. Or he might argue that being in a marriage or committed relationship comes with certain obligations to be there for him.

Undoubtedly that’s true, but if she’s feeling she’s so stifled, for whatever reason, why not give her space to discover herself anew? Then if she does come back to you, you know she’s with you out of true desire and not obligation.

And of course this is equally true if it’s the man who wants the sabbatical.

Scary stuff – for both, however it plays out!

Negotiating the ‘rules’ of the sabbatical are important: how much if any contact to have with each other, and of course the biggie – can you see other people while apart? That discussion in itself is challenging yet empowering and personal-growth-inducing. It’s hard though, which is why I get called in to help out.

I do admire the men and women who can allow this to happen. It does take a considerable amount of personal growth to be able to accept this choice. This level of awareness and consciousness does mean though, that if the one on leave decides that they don’t want to be in the marriage, they are mature enough to separate with love and consideration, rather than the more typical bitterness and hostility.

So back to our couple who opened this article, when he said his wife was having a ‘marriage sabbatical’ I knew that he understood, and so did she. He gave her the space with love, got on with his own life in the meantime (so wasn’t just ‘waiting’ passively), she accepted that offer graciously – and they both gave their relationship the best chance for growth that they could.

The result? She chose to stay with him and they’re continuing to grow and develop their relationship anew.

10 ways to live a better life

Adopting a few simple habits in your day can make all the difference towards living a better life.
10 ways to live a better life

Almost everyone would admit that they could be happier in their lives, however if we keep doing what we’ve always done we’ll keep feeling how we’ve always felt.

It’s time to adopt some new healthy habits in order to reach for the joy we’ve always strived for and grab that happiness with both hands.

Start saying yes

It’s very easy for us to get stuck in a routine and we become blinkered to new experiences. By practicing saying yes, we open ourselves up to getting out of ruts, and inviting new experiences into our lives.

It’s also a very positive way to speak to ourselves. Instead of saying “No, I couldn’t do that/go there/speak to them,” tell yourself “Yes, Yes I can.”

Spend more money on experiences than material things

When you purchase something you desire you get a momentary thrill which you feel perhaps for a day or two before you set your sights on something else that you desire. These material desires do not bring you intrinsic happiness, but merely a momentary satisfaction.

Spending your money on experiences not only broadens your reality but it builds memories that carry a feeling with them. Experiences also give you stories to share with people. Manolos, not so much.

Stop being judgemental

It is very easy to sit back and cast aspersions on others but without having lived in their skin we can never understand the intricacies of another’s life.

“We can never truly know someone’s full story,” says From The Leftfield’s psychologist Dr Sasha Lynn. “What might look odd to you on the outside may make perfect sense to someone else on the inside. Conversely, what we think is ok for us might look completely odd to someone else. Holding preconceived notions does nothing for any of us. It doesn’t make you feel good, and it doesn’t help others.”

Stop doing all of the time and start being

We are always so busy. We fill every minute of every day with doing all of the things. We cram more on our To Do lists and at the end of each day we are emotionally and physically spent.

What if instead we looked at being. How do we want to be? Would we like to be more relaxed, less anxious, less exhausted? Trying doing the things required to allow you to be this way.

The art of quiet and slow is not easy in this world’s frenetic pace, but practicing meditation, reading or simply daydreaming is a great way to restore your balance on life’s crazy see-saw.

Begin something new

It’s easy to become stagnant and set in our ways but a new project or activity stimulates our brain activity and senses.

“Starting something new brings with it a range of benefits. Although it can seem scary at first, trying new things can improve our mood, challenge us, keep us moving forward and bring a great sense of enjoyment to our lives. And if it doesn’t work out? Then it’s not a waste. It’s given us tools to learn and build from, and we know we’ve given it a go,” says Dr Lynn.

Practice gratitude

We often look at the things we don’t have a life but a simple [shift in perspective]( http://www.aww.com.au/latest-news/lets-talk/can-mindfulness-increase-your-happiness-23379|target=”_blank” can have a huge impact on our attitude.

“Gratitude is so very vital to so many things in our lives,” tells Dr Lynn. “It gets us into the habit of reframing- changing our cognitive patterns, which is just a fancy way of saying it can help change our thinking process. Often by focusing on what is going well, it helps us to build resilience, balance, compassion, and emotion regulation.”

Exercise (but don’t beat yourself up when you can’t)

Research shows that just 30 minutes of exercise a day can help with a variety of problems ranging from weight gain and heart problems to mild depression and anxiety. If you have weight loss or specific health goals you may need more but as far as general health goes 30 minutes is a cracking start.

Making exercise a priority and scheduling it into our lives will only improve your life, but conversely, understanding that you will not always have time and being chilled about that is equally important.

If you feel your life is too busy, make an effort to fit in 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week and anything else you get is a bonus.

Let go of negative thoughts about yourself

An important step towards living a better life is kicking negative self-talk to the curb. We would never dream of speaking to a friend the way we speak to ourselves, so make a vow to treat yourself as a friend and be kind and gentle.

“When we think about ourselves in a negative light, it holds us back from life. We don’t push ourselves to try new things, we withdraw from others, we remain stagnant. It also keeps us internalising and self-consumed, which is never healthy. If it doesn’t do anything for you, and doesn’t change your situation, why continue with it?” says Dr Lynn.

Help others

A 2016 study suggests that giving social support to others has better effects on the brain than receiving help from others. When we help others, or even donate to charity, the mesolimbic system is triggered. This is the portion of the brain that triggers the reward feelings and releases feel food chemicals. This is something psychologists call “helper’s high.”

Helping others builds relationships, boosts your self-esteem and makes removes your focus from your own life and shifts it to someone else’s.

Smile at one stranger a day

The act of smiling triggers a little happy dance in your brain. Smiling activates neural messages that benefit your health and happiness. Smiling is contagious so when you smile (and activate your feel good neurotransmitters) and someone returns that smile you are helping them activate their happy hormones.

“It might seem a bit creepy, but ask yourself- when a stranger smiles at you, how does it make you feel?” asks Dr Lynn. “Most of the time, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy and you smile back, feeling uplifted and happy. Research has actually shown when we do and say nice things for others, it actually benefits us too. So we’re self-serving and helping others simultaneously.”

Loose lips: Kiss Bang Love star Geordie tells all!

The sweet-natured tradie opens up about the very un-glamorous side to Channel Seven’s new dating show.
Geordie Kiss Bang Love

Last night, the nation watched as Melbourne lad Geordie made out with 12 hopeful women on Kiss Bang Love.

And while it might sound like many people’s ultimate fantasy, Geordie has revealed it’s anything but!

Speaking to the Herald Sun, the fitness fanatic explained of shooting the kissing scenes: “I was there from seven in the morning until 10 at night.”

“The process of doing it, going through each kiss, and talking about every kiss, is very long. I kissed the first 12 (women) one after another, then had a break… and ate a lot of breath mints,” the 27-year-old added.

As for what rules were in place, Geordie said the producers let him call the shots.

“[The producers] said: ‘Do what you feel is natural.’ But I didn’t want to be grabbing them all over their body while kissing.”

Once the lead star of the episode has kissed the 12 candidates blind-folded, they then pick five finalists to smooch sans blindfold.

Geordie and Bronwen didn’t hold back during their one-on-one date.

After that, they must whittle it down to two lucky ladies, who they’ll then take on an intimate sleepover date.

From there, only one person can picked to go on a romantic holiday.

In a unique twist, a former flame is secretly embedded within the batch of 12 candidates.

Ultimately Geordie picked Shana to go away to Noosa with and the pair are still dating.

“I found what I wanted, and it’s going really well,” Geordie mused.

In the end, the tradie picked Shana as the winner and the pair are still going strong.

How to open wine without a corkscrew

Never be left high and dry with your wine bottle again.
Loading the player...

In the days before the Stelvin, or screw cap wine lid, you would hear the occasional cry of despair from someone who wanted nothing more than a glass of vino but was brought undone by a missing corkscrew.

Now, this handy video by YouTuber Jordan O’Brien means that you need never be parched again when your corkscrew has disappeared into the depths of the kitchen reports Daily Mail.

Jordan highlights three different techniques using household goods to solve the problem. Two of the techniques require somewhat of a tool box, but if all else fails the final technique uses nothing but a standard toothbrush.

The toothbrush uses brute force to shove the cork into the bottle which will create a little mess when you finally hit your home run, but don’t cry over spilled wine because you can now access the rest of the nectar.

The next technique requires a screw, a screwdriver and a pair of pliers and it more or less “MacGuyvering” a make-shift corkscrew. It will still require a little elbow grease to pull the cork but you will deserve a drink when you’ve conquered the bottle.

The final technique is similar to the previous but instead of pliers gripping the screws, you’re using a hammer claw to wriggle it out after you’ve screwed two screws into your cork.

These techniques are so surprisingly simple you’ll be surprised you never thought of them before and you’ll want to buy this kid a drink.

Queen Elizabeth on the cover of Vanity Fair

And of course her four corgis were right by her side!
The Queen

From Queen of England to cover girl, is there anything this 90-year-old royal can’t do?

Sitting comfortably in the lush gardens of her Windsor Castle home, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch posed happily in a stunning Vanity Fair cover shot by iconic photographer, Annie Leibovitz.

Her Majesty graces the summer issue of Vanity Fair for the second time.

Perched on a bench covered by a blue blanket, Queen Elizabeth II is surrounded by her four loyal corgis and dorgies Willow, Vulcan, Candy and Holly.

And it was an idea thought up by the Queen herself!

“The most moving, important thing about this shoot is that these were all her ideas,” Annie, 66, said to Vanity Fair.

“She wanted to be photographed with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh; her daughter, Anne, the Princess Royal; and her corgis.”

The 90-year-old has always adored her corgis.

“I was told how relaxed she was at Windsor, and it was really true. You get the sense of how at peace she was with herself, and very much enthralled with her family.”

The photographer, who previously shot stunning portraits of the monarch in her home almost a decade ago, was referring to the jaw-dropping family portraits released in late April to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

A particularly intimate family portrait showed Her Majesty with her five great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren, sitting in the Green Drawing Room of Windsor Castle.

Check out the spectacular portraits by hitting the link below!

As the youngest, little Charlotte sat atop her great-grandmother’s knee whilst cheeky George proudly showed off his knee-high socks next to them.

And if the snap wasn’t already sweet enough, two-year-old Mia Tindall was pictured clinging to the monarch’s handbag as if it were a prized possession – a moment that was recently revealed as totally unplanned.

Watch Mike Tindall talk about his cheeky daughter’s role in the royal snap, in the video player below. Post continues!

Also pictured in the portrait is eight-year-old James, Viscount Severn and his sister, Lady Louise, 12, whose parents are The Earl and Countess of Wessex.

The Queen’s other granddaughter’s Savannah, five, and Isla Phillips three, who are daughters of The Queen’s oldest grandson Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn also stand tall next to the 90-year-old.

Another portrait released earlier this year to mark the momentous birthday shows the 90-year-old with her only daughter Anne, The Princess Royal.

Anne is incredibly close to the Queen.

The 55-year-old posed alongside her mother, placing her arm lovingly around her, as they reclinef on a plush couch in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.

Her Majesty was clearly thrilled to be in her daughter’s company.

The new issue of Vanity Fair (which is bound to include more incredible photographs!) will hit UK newsstands later this week.

Apparently this isn’t a trick question – his first name isn’t actually Rove.

Oh, the deception!

One contestant passed (because who the heck knows his name is something other than Rove), and the next contestant locked in ‘Darren’.

Bum-bow, incorrect.

Turns out, the Gold Logie winner and radio host’s first name is John. John Henry Michael McManus, if you want to get technical.

So there you go, mind blown.

Of course, the jokester made light of the situation on social media.

Kiss Bang Love recap: episode two

After Lisa failed to find love at first kiss last week, will single guy Geordie have better luck? Elisa Parry decides.
Loading the player...

Tonight’s contestant Geordie is a 26-year-old chippy and farmer who’s looking for love. Perhaps not the sharpest tool in the shed, it’s unclear at this early stage if Geordie is aware he’s on Kiss Bang Love, not Farmer Wants A Wife.

Geordie, you sure you’re on the right show?

When he’s not fixing things on the family farm – because family is really important to him and he loves spending time with his family – Geordie spends his time training for Iron Man competitions.

Yep, you guessed it, along with “nervous” and “great”, “family” is getting added to the Kiss Bang Love drinking game list. Play on at your own peril.

Geordie is very comfortable wearing lycra.

To recap the rules of the show, Geordie must kiss 12 girls blindfolded, meet his top five favourites without the blindfold, and take two on overnight dates. He will then take the new love of his life on a mini-break to Noosa.

On hand to offer advice/live vicariously through Geordie, are his friend Michael and brother Lachie.

“Just pretend like you’re in da club.” Wow.

Highlights of this episode’s blindfolded kissing round include business owner and self-confessed “biter” Jessica, who in her very short intro piece to camera, manages to set some serious alarm bells ringing. To say she went in with confidence would be a serious understatement.

Clearly Channel 7 really needs to up their catering budget.

Having finally grasped the premise of the show, Geordie shockingly admits, “She was like, sucking my face!” The brutal realisation that he’s not on Farmer Wants A Wife after all begins to sink in.

Could you just hold still while we wipe that excess saliva away for the next girl?

Our next worthy contender in the pecking (or, let’s be real, pashing) order is 26-year-old Shana, a model-slash-miner. Shana believes her smile is her best asset, though it doesn’t stop her from putting her other ample assets on display.

It’s on between Geordie and Shana who gets the highest score so far of 8.5 out of 10. We hope Geordie’s lack of commitment to full numbers is no indication of his commitment issues in general.

Next up, Shakespeare-spouting actress-slash-model Kayla wins the award for “I don’t know where to put my hands” as she attempts to take Geordie’s temp and check his vitals throughout the kiss.

After suffering through 11 make-out sessions, it’s time for Geordie to meet secret kisser “Brianna”. Brianna is actually Bronwen, a close friend of Geordie’s who was asked to join the show by their mutual friend Michael.

The risky gamble pays off with Bronwen scoring a whopping 9.5 out of 10, and a double fist pump from Geordie.

Victory!

Geordie’s second round of kisses with his top five girls goes relatively smoothly, though nothing has prepared him to see his close friend Bronwen walk through the door…

After recovering from the shock of pashing his bestie twice, Geordie decides it would be a good idea to keep doing it. He chooses Bronwen and Shana to accompany him on the overnight dates.

Geordie and Shana spend the day in active wear riding through Daylesford. They talk about how natural and comfortable they feel with each other while looking very unnatural and uncomfortable.

Once the 24 hours is up, Geordie must love and leave Shana to meet his second date and close friend, Bronwen.

Bronwen and Geordie spend the day in Melbourne swimming in a pool with other people. It’s obviously very romantic.

Despite being a bit nervous about the situation, Bronwen seems like a great girl, with great family values (boom, that sentence will put you under the table). Geordie and Bronwen seem relaxed together and sure, they’ve known each other a long time, but there is still a spark there.

During the final debrief session, Geordie’s brother Lachie and friend Michael help to spell out Geordie’s situation: “You know Bronwen, you know she’s 100% genuine, you know what she wants. And then on the flip side, you’re going for someone that is brand new and a big risk.”

So what does our single guy Geordie do with this sage advice? Ignore it and goes to Noosa with Shana. We get it mate, the lure of a beach holiday with Shana and her assets in a bikini was too strong to resist.

But really Geordie? For the record, we were #TeamBronwen all the way.
