The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the Sydney to Los Angeles flight that left on June 21.
The incident occurred when a passenger’s smartphone slipped between the seats and crushed the reclining mechanism, six-and-a-half hours into the 13 hour flight.
The battery then burst into flames, causing crew member to extinguish the blaze and the flight continued onto LA.
The ATSB confirmed the incident, and said it would seek information from Qantas as part of its investigation, news.com.au reports.
Qantas and other Australian airlines banned the carriage of lithium-ion batteries in cargo holds last year after they were found to pose an unacceptable risk of fire.

Brisbane mother Sally Faulkner has been charged with kidnapping her own children.

A Lebanese judge has charged Ms Faulkner and former soldier Adam Whittington following a child recovery operation in Lebanon earlier this year, 9news reports.
The 60 Minutes crew, which includes reporter Tara Brown and producer Stephen Rice, have had charges they were facing downgraded to misdemeanours.
“We have been advised tonight by our legal team in Lebanon that the charges our 60 Minutes crew are facing in Lebanon have been downgraded,” a Nine Network spokeswoman said.
“There will still be a trial on a date to be determined and out of respect for the Lebanese legal process we will not be making any further comment while the matter is still before the court.”
Ms Faulkner’s lawyer is hopeful the kidnapping charge will be dismissed on appeal.
Wittington’s lawyer, Joe Karam, said an appeals court now has to approve or overturn the indictment, ABC News reports.
“We are fully confident with the Lebanese criminal justice system that whenever it goes to a trial we will reach to the right appropriate decision, where they consider a kidnapping of a child by his mother is not a kidnapping,” he said.
The 60 Minutes team travelled to Beirut where a team from Child Abduction Recovery international were paid to grab the two children of Ms Faulkner.
On April 7, Faulkner and the 60 Minutes crew were arrested by Lebanese police.
A rumoured $1 million payment to the children’s father Ali Elamine enabled them to be released.
However, Faulkner was also forced to relinquish full custody of her two children.

In 2008, Harry shared a piece of his heart and grief at a Thanksgiving service. “William and I can separate life into two parts. In a touching new interview with The Mail on Sunday‘s You magazine, she recalled how her friend had a knack for making children happy.
“She would have been a fantastic grandmother. It breaks my heart even thinking about it, because she would have been amazing, she really would,” says Julia.
The 56-year-old had firsthand experience with Diana’s special way with kids, as the Princess was godmother to her son Benjamin, now 26.
Diana was, “the most brilliant godmother – warm and loving and fun, the sort who gave the presents parents never wanted to give because they were so huge and noisy and nightmarish, but that the children loved,” she said to the British newspaper.
Prince William was so moved by her friendship with his mother, he returned the favour, naming Julia one of Prince George’s godparents.
“Diana is my role model. I am aiming to be as good a godmother as she was,” Julia admitted about her role in George’s life.
Diana and Julia struck up a friendship after meeting back in 1987 at a dinner. The two mothers were often spotted enjoying London’s social scene, as they lived near each other.
