Daniel Morcombe murder to be made into movie

The chilling murder of Queensland boy Daniel Morcombe will be made into a film, with promises of new information on the case.

The chilling murder of 13-year-old Queensland boy Daniel Morcombe will be made into a film, with promises of new information on the case.

Daniel was abducted from a Sunshine Coast bus stop in December 2003 and his remains were found in August 2011.

His parents Bruce and Denise never gave up on the search to find answers and justice for their son. They created the Daniel Morcombe Foundation which teaches young children about personal safety.

Daniel’s story will now be told on the big screen – if the filmmakers can get the financial backing. It’s been in the works for 18 months, with scripts written.

The film will shed light on the family’s search for the boy, and the police operation to catch his killer, Brett Peter Cowan.

Mr Morcombe said: “(The filmmakers) will bring Daniel’s legacy to life.”

“At times it gives you goosebumps, to be honest, and certainly the video clip that’s been produced is a little haunting.”

He continued: “We’ve just read the second script on the weekend and we’re really happy with that.”

The filmmakers have launched an online campaign to raise funds for the film, with filming to begin early next year.

“People don’t make a lot of money out of film like they think they do, but people make films because they love to tell the story. And this story, in particular, is an extremely important story to tell,” director Peter Cousens said.

Reeva’s Cousin Reveals: “Reeva tried to tell me – I could have saved her!”

As Oscar Pistorius is sentenced to six years imprisonment for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, Woman's Day chats to her cousin in this world exclusive.

While the world reels in shock at the leniency of the judge’s sentence – with many calling for Oscar to be jailed for 15 years, the prescribed minimum term for murder – Kim Martin reveals she believes her cousin Reeva tried to reach out to her for help. And if she’d listened she might have been able to stop the murder.

It was February 14, Valentine’s Day, when news of the killing of South African model Reeva broke across the world. The 29-year-old had been shot four times through a locked bathroom door, by her boyfriend, Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius.

“Public opinion may be loud and persistent but it can play no role in the decision of this court,” Judge Thokozile Masipa said of the South African Olympic sprinter, who has already served 12 months in jail for his girlfriend’s death.

“I’ll never forget the last time
I saw Reeva,” recalls 44-year-old Kim from her Cape Town home.

“It was January 2, just a few weeks before her death, and she brought Oscar to meet us. They dropped in on their way to a popular beach spot up the coast and we went to breakfast.”

But it wasn’t long before Oscar started to get agitated. “It was very strange, almost awkward. He was unhappy with the service at the cafe,” remembers Kim.

“He got up from the table to take a phone call. I asked Reeva quickly while he was gone if she was happy. She paused, shrugged her shoulders, and said very unconvincingly, ‘Yes, but we need to talk.’ I never had a chance to have that conversation.

Loading the player...

“Looking back, I know that was the day she reached out to me – it was a cry for help. I never asked her to elaborate and that’s plagued and haunted me ever since.

“She was in strife. And it was too late before we all realised.”

In a trial that captivated the world, Pistorius pleaded not guilty to murdering Reeva and claimed that the killing was
a tragic mistake, that he mistook
his girlfriend for an intruder when
he fired through the toilet door.

Much to the dismay of Reeva’s family, he was initially found not guilty
of murder, but guilty of culpable homicide – South Africa’s equivalent of manslaughter – and sentenced to five years in jail.

After spending just 10 months behind bars, Pistorius was released and ordered to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest at his uncle’s luxury home.

Then, in December
2015, prosecutors successfully appealed the conviction. Pistorius was finally found guilty of murder.

Reeva Steenkamp and Oscar Pistorius

It’s taken years for Pistorius
to be dealt a fitting punishment, yet time has done little to dull the horror of
his crime.

“I was in
the car with my husband Dion,” recalls Kim of
the moment she heard of Reeva’s death. “We were on our way to work listening to the radio. They said Oscar Pistorius had shot and killed his girlfriend.

“I knew even without hearing her name it was her. I thought, no, no please – not Reeva. I remember screaming hysterically, calling her phone and she wasn’t answering.

“I was completely engulfed by grief and then unbelievable guilt that maybe I could’ve saved her.

“Reeva was the first baby I ever held,” says Kim, flicking away tears. “I was 12 when Auntie June handed her over and I cradled her in my arms. There was an immediate bond between us that got stronger every day right until the day we lost her.

“That’s why I’m going to be her voice – and to make this my life’s work to continue her crusade to help others.”

Kim has made it her life mission to help others like Reeva.

Kim and Reeva’s mum June are joining forces to set up the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation (reevasteenkampfoundation.org) in her memory, to help educate the world about domestic abuse and violence. It will launch on August 19, which would’ve been Reeva’s 33rd birthday.

“When you consider the World Health Organization states that approximately one in three women experience abuse and domestic violence at some point in their lives, I knew I had to do this. The foundation is already getting extraordinary support – including from Australia,” says Kim.

“Domestic violence is very difficult to work with – it’s not like a cancer that’s picked up on a scan, and it doesn’t discriminate. It happens across all socio-economic groups. Who better to be the face of this than Reeva who I know would’ve fought so hard for her life,” she adds.

“I don’t believe Reeva was ever in love with Oscar. They’d hardly been together at all. They first
met back in November, just a few months before she died.”

Asked if she thought Pistorius was the jealous type, Kim says, “Definitely, 100 per cent. I know he was driven by jealousy.”

Oscar may have finally been found guilty of murder but nothing can ease the pain of losing her best friend.

“Nothing will bring back our Reeva. For the rest of my days I’ll make sure the world never forgets Reeva Steenkamp – the kindest human being I will ever know.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call 1800 737 732 for support.

Dad charged with murdering wife, assaulting kids: ‘I’m a loving father’

A man has been charged with the murder of his 27-year-old wife and assaulting his three children (all under the age of six).

Despite being charged with killing his wife and assaulting his three young children, 34-year-old Bassam Raad says he’s a loving father.

He was arrested on Monday night after his young kids (aged six, four and two) were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was then linked to a murder of a then-unidentified woman.

The battered body was found dumped two kilometres from the family’s Broadmeadows home wrapped in a quilt on June 17, and was then identified as Raad’s 27-year-old wife Zeinab Taleb.

Last night in an out-of-sessions court hearing, he was charged with murder and three counts of intentionally causing serious injury.

At the hearing, Detective Senior Constable Miranda Stubbs said forensic officers found a large amount of blood inside their home, pointing to the belief that Raad murdered Talen there.

Raad told the hearing: “My heart is breaking. I want to see my kids.”

“I am a loving father.”

He was refused bail and will front the Melbourne Magistrates Court today.

In 2008, Raad was acquitted in trial after he and 11 other men were accused of planning terror attacks in Melbourne.

Sam Wood and Snezana Markoski move in to their new home

Six months after purchasing their first $1.65 million Melbourne home, Bachelor couple Sam Wood and Snezana Markoski finally move on in.
Sam Wood Snezana Markoski

Roomies!

Finally, after six months of living in a lush Melbourne home without his finance and her gorgeous 10-year-old daughter, Sam Wood’s girls are finally moving in.

The handsome personal trainer confirmed the exciting news in an announcement posted to his Facebook page on Wednesday night.

“When you’ve spent all night cleaning the house as your fiance and her beautiful little girl are finally coming to live and you know it still isn’t clean enough,” he joked.

The Elsternwick love nest, which will soon be filled with the complete and happy family, boasts three charming bedrooms, including one for Snez’s beautiful daughter Eve.

The stylish, modern home also features a spacious backyard, perfect the fitness guru’s darling dog.

Sam can’t wait for his girls to arrive home!

Hey Sam and Snez, can we come to the housewarming?

Whilst the third bedroom could well be used as a guest room, fans are speculating that a recent teaser from the bach himself might indicate that the quaint room could be repurposed as a nursery.

Earlier this week, Sam suggested an announcement on his Facebook page, sharing the cover of an upcoming magazine which read, “Our exciting news…We can’t wait”.

And since we know that the couple are indeed trying for a baby, the announcement of a new arrival could come any day now!

Watch Sam and Snez talk about their future plans in the video player below! Post continues…

Loading the player...

“We’re enjoying it very much,” Sam told Australia’s OK! Magazine before adding, “We do want more kids.”

With a wedding looming Snez says she doesn’t mind if she’s a pregnant bride.

“I mean, whatever happens first, happens first,” Snezana revealed.

There’s no doubt the pair would make amazing parents with Sam already forming a close bond with Eve.

Is this what breakfast time will look like from now on?

It’s certainly not the first time the clucky couple have addressed their desires to start a family.

When Woman’s Day caught up with the love birds shortly after last year’s finale in September, they admitted they couldn’t wait to take things to the next level.

“Neither of us can believe in the ridiculous way we’ve managed to find each other. I adore kids and can’t wait to have a family with Snez,” Sam told us.

The loved-up couple cannot wait to grow their little family!

Identical twin sisters give birth on the same day

What are the odds!

Scroll down for video

Identical twin sisters Sarah Mariuz and Leah Rodgers always had an unbreakable bond, but never did they expect to fall pregnant at the same time, only to give birth on the same day at the EXACT same time!

From different US cities in different time zones, both women gave birth to their first bubs on June 30 at 1.18am.

Sarah welcomed a baby girl, Samantha Lynne in La Jolla, California, while Leah met her baby boy Reid Joseph in Denver, Colorado.

Leah pictured here with her husband Kyle, welcomed her bub first.

“It’s that magical twin connection I suppose,” Sarah told People of the uncanny coincidence.

“There have just been certain things in our life where things just match up – it’s odd.”

“We didn’t plan being pregnant at the same time. But our journeys aligned, even giving birth! Twins have a special bond, it’s hard to explain.”

Check out Leah and Sarah’s incredible story in the video player below! Post continues…

Loading the player...

Recalling the moment the 35-year-olds discovered the baffling news while celebrating Thanksgiving, Leah, who is 11 minutes older than her sister, said: “I wanted it to be a surprise, but when she showed up at the door – it was the funniest thing – but as soon as I saw her, I knew she was pregnant too.”

“I can’t explain it, I just knew.”

Sarah planned on letting Leah have her celebratory moment to herself, but when she discovered that they were only due four days apart, she simply couldn’t hold it in any longer.

“I ran down the hallway and got the ultrasound pic out of my purse and slapped it down next to Leah’s.”

“We were jumping up and down, just so happy for each other. Everyone was just in shock,” she said to Today.

Exactly one hour later at the same local time, Sarah, pictured with her husband Nick, met her newborn.

“It’s a really cool thing to be able to share,” says Leah. “The adventure will only continue as our babies share the same birthday like we did! We can’t wait for them to grow up together.”

Both Leah and Sarah have since returned from hospital and are making plans to introduce their babies, who will no doubt share a close bond, as soon as they can!

Congratulations, Leah and Sarah!

Oscar Pistorius sentenced to 6 years in jail

The court case has finally ended.
Oscar Pistorius sentenced to 6 years in jail

A South African judge has sentenced Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius to six years in jail for his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp’s murder.

Pistorius fatally shot Ms Steenkamp four times through a toilet door and has already served 12 months in jail for her death.

The original manslaughter conviction was increased to murder by the Supreme Court of Appeal in December and Judge Thokozile Masipa said she had accepted the defence argument that a lesser punishment was appropriate.

Pistorius and his sister in court.

“Public opinion may be loud and persistent but it can play no role in the decision of this court,” Masipa said on Wednesday.

“I am of the view that a long term in prison will not serve justice.”

The state and large sections of the public demanded Pistorius be jailed for 15 years, the prescribed minimum term for murder, saying he had shown no remorse.

It’s unclear whether the state would accept the sentence. They have two weeks to appeal.

Queen Elizabeth’s reigning fashion through the ages

The Palace are continuing the festivities for the Queen's 90th birthday in the most majestic way!
Loading the player...

The Queen’s most recognisable frock will be on display Buckingham Palace.

The stunning exhibition, that ties into her 90th celebrations, titled Fashioning A Reign: 90 Years of Style from the Queen’s Wardrobe, will open to the public from July 23.

And the palace has just given us a sneak peek!

This was worn by the Queen on a state visit to the Netherlands in 1958.

This is the second time the Monarch’s most-treasured outfits from her childhood to the present day has been exhibited.

It will “show the unique requirements of royal couture” with a mix of historical items including iconic designs from Sir Norman Hartnell and Sir Hardy Amies.

Royal watchers will recognise her sunshine yellow coat that she donned at Wills and Kate’s 2011 nuptials.

The Angela Kelly design will be on public display for the first time ever!

The clothes are piece of history.

And of course, fans of Britannia’s longest reigning monarch would be delighted to see her favourtie glittering ballgowns.

One majestic item on display is a turquoise silk shift dress with silver floral embroidery by Hardy Amies.

It was worn by the Queen for an official portrait by Cecil Beaton in the White Drawing Room, Buckingham Palace, 1968.

While the other glittering gem on show is a pale blue and gold evening dress worn on a state visit to the Netherlands in 1958.

With a full arc of her life through her fashion, avid royal watchers will get a chance to see other historical items, including her uniform that she donned when she was Princess Elizabeth.

Just a teen, the royal proudly wore it while serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) during the Second World War.

The proud mother wore this ensemble, designed by couturier Sir Norman Hartnell, at Princess Anne’s wedding.

The exhibit will highlight some of the most prolific moments in Her Majesty’s life.

It will no doubt shine a light on the splendours she has experienced through her 64-year-reign.

The Queen’s official residences will host three separate displays marking her 90th birthday – with a total of around 150 outfits to be shown at Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and at Windsor Castle.

We think that sounds absolutely grand!
