It’s pretty obvious that saving a proportion of your hard earned salary is a good idea. But for many of us it is much easier said than done... until now.
A new study looking at the psychology of saving has found impulsiveness and materialism lead to bad financial decisions and poor saving habits.
Conversely, they found that the key to developing good saving habits is to focus on the future.
During the study, researchers surveyed 700 American adults about their financial behaviour (including impulsiveness, materialism and financial literacy) as well as questions that tested the extent to which they think about the future.
As expected, they discovered that high levels of impulsiveness and materialism led to poor financial decisions (more spending, less saving).
However, they also discovered that the biggest predictor of good saving and investment was focusing on the future.
Adele Martin is an Australian certified financial planner and Managing Director of Experience Wealth. She says that the results of the study don’t surprise her at all.
“As a society we want instant gratification and it’s why Australia’s credit card debt stands at $32 billion with an annual interest bill of over $5 billion,” she tells The Weekly Online.
But Martin says we can all improve our financial habits using goal based financial planning.
So how can we put this into practice? Martin suggests getting really clear bout your goal and putting pen to paper can help motivate saving.
“Having written goals is crucial for savings,” she says.
“Be as specific as possible as this will help the goal come to life and feel more real. For example ‘in July 2020 we want to buy our first home in Melbourne’.”
Martin also says that being able to visualise your goal will help you to keep saving front of mind.
“Have a picture that represents your goal and place this image on your fridge or phone screen saver as a constant reminder,” she suggests.
Martin notes that focussing on the future also gives people a reason to put their credit card away when they are tempted by an impulse purchase.
“It gives you a reason to say ‘no’ to the new shoes,” she says.
Chantelle Connelly made serious enemies with the girls when she first stepped into the Geordie Shore pad, leaving a trail of drooling lads in her wake.
But as she exited the house, storming off set and sensationally quitting the show during filming the recent season, it seems no-one batted an eyelid.
It all came to blows when Chantelle and Gaz Beadle got into an argument after it was revealed she was cheating on her boyfriend Tommy Sayers.
“On camera she wanted people to think she was single but she was necking on with Gaz,” Marty McKenna reveals to NW.
“She had a boyfriend the whole time!” laughs Gaz. “We had one argument – her first real big argument – and she was like that’s it – I’m leaving.”
But the boys say they haven’t missed her. “Chantelle left but I don’t think anyone really cared,” says Gaz. “She never really got involved.”
Marty agrees: “She was strange, man. She’d just sit there in a conversation and say ‘I agree.’”
Somehow we don’t think there’ll be many catch-ups on the agenda for these three…
Princess Beatrice of York and Dave Clark have decided to end their relationship after ten years together.
The Mail on Sunday is reporting that the 27-year-old royal and her financer boyfriend called it quits after talks of marriage ended in the pair deciding that they didn’t see a long term future together.
Beatrice and Dave began dating a decade ago after Prince William introduced his cousin to Dave when the two became chums at university – William was at St Andrews while Dave was studying at nearby Edinburgh University.
Beatrice has spent the past year in the US studying a finance course in San Francisco before moving to the east coast to take an investment banking job. The royal reportedly made the move across the Atlantic to be with Dave was also commuting between the two coasts while pursuing his career working for taxi app company, Uber.
The Mail claims Princess Beatrice’s parents Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York and sister Princess Eugenie are reportedly “completely shocked” by the breakup.
While the news of the split is being widely reported by UK media there is no official word from Beatrice or her family as yet.
Over the weekend, Taylor Swift made a memorable return to the stage after her summer of love with Tom Hiddleston.
The blonde beauty finally surfaced from her relationship world tour to perform at a birthday bash in The Hamptons, alongside ’00s icon, Nelly.
Attendees at model Karlie Kloss and oil heir Mike Hess’ joint celebration were given the treat of seeing the songstress perform Kelly Rowland’s lines in the rapper’s 2002 classic, Dilemma, with the man himself.

The fun-filled, flirty duet was met with resounding cheers as the pair danced their way around each other, but apparently Taylor needed a little convincing before she felt comfortable stepping into the spotlight.
“Taylor was in an amazing mood, and super fun all night,” a source recalled to E! News, adding “She danced her ass off.”
“At first she didn’t want to perform but then Nelly asked her. Everyone was super into it, the crowd loved it.”
The insider also revealed that the Shake It Off singer was flying solo without her high-profile beau, but that didn’t stop her from planting a few kisses!
In a Snapchat video recorded by a party guest, Tay can be seen strutting her way over to birthday boy Mike before giving him a cheeky smooch.
The pair continued to dance closely with each other with Mike holding onto the 26-year-old’s hips, but that was allegedly all that transpired between the pair who have been friends for years.
Meanwhile, it would seem that any mention of Taylor’s name still proves to be a sore spot for her ex-boyfriend, Calvin Harris.
Upon receiving the Icon award at the Caesars Palace’s 50th Anniversary Gala on Saturday night, the DJ was subjected to a joke that made reference to his former flame.
“Nice suit – who is your Taylor?” host Howie Mandel said to the Scottish musician.
“Nice one … I guess you had that one prepared,” he fired back, clearly shaken up about the sudden mention of his former flame.
“Calvin was not impressed with that joke at all. It was as if Howie did not know that he and Taylor had split up, so it appeared to be a diss to Calvin,” one guest revealed to The Sun.
“He just looked completely shell shocked.”
Calvin and Taylor announced their split in June earlier this year. Just two weeks later, the songstress was pictured kissing British actor Tom Hiddleston.
The 55-year-old was as charming as ever as he sat down with the American news outlet to discuss some of the biggest moments in his life.
And while he may be one of Hollywood’s most beloved leading actors, Hugh is under the impression that he is difficult to work with.
“I’ve driven people mad on films that I’ve made. I want more takes, I want to try new lines. Then I want to interfere in the editing process and I want to interfere in the advertising process, everything, everything,” he said.
“Pretty much Barbra Streisand in trousers, I am!”

But that doesn’t mean the entire world isn’t captivated by the star.
One of his most iconic film moments has to be the that dance in the Richard Curtis’ rom-com Love Actually.
Sadly, Hugh admits he felt very little love for his grooving.
“I dreaded the dance scene in Love Actually more than having my teeth extracted,” he revealed.
“And you know, the thing is, you gotta be in the mood for dancing. You know, it takes me quite a lot of vodka before I really want to, or if I’m alone at home with no one around, I like a bit of a dance sometimes in my pants.”
The British star swooned his way into hearts everywhere following his role in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
But according to Hugh the 1994 flick, which scored him a Golden Globe, was never meant to be a hit.
“When the film was rough cut together, the producers and everyone sat together and watched the film and agreed it was the worst thing ever perpetrated in the history of cinema. There was no laughs. It was just awful. And I felt the same. And we all wanted to emigrate before the film came out,” he mused.
We all know how that turned out!
With great fame comes great drama, and boy, did the lad who graduated from Oxford, deliver.
In the height of his ’90s glory he was dating “it girl” Liz Hurley… until as Hugh described it, his “hiccup” of a summer.
The 1995 bump in the road was, of course, when he was arrested for lewd behaviour in a public place with prostitute Divine Brown.
Reflecting on his arrest, Hugh said: “I was very naughty. I was very drunk. And yeah, it was regrettable.”
“It was entirely to be expected, that there would be a huge hullabaloo about that, particularly given this rather absurd persona that I had been given about who I was on the back of Four Weddings.“
“People thought I was this nice character I played in that film. And so I suppose the contrast between that person and this seedy behavior was juicy stuff. And I quite understand why it was a big story.”
While the actor generally plays the perfect man, Hugh is the first to admit that off-screen, things are a little different.
In fact, the 55-year-old, who is now a dad-to-four-kids, confesses that commitment stresses him out.
“It’s not just commitment. ‘Permanence’ scares me. I don’t know why.I have known a few good marriages, but very few.”
Taking a moment, he added, “And others look to me like they’re pretty miserable. I don’t really think that’s a recipe for happiness.”

Clearly in the mood to share, Hugh, who is on the promo circuit for his new film with Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins, chatted to James Corden… but things soon took a very cheeky turn!
Joking about his many kids, he quipped, “Well, four at the last count, but I can’t stop. If you feel anything coming off me, let me know!”
The actor has two children with Anna Eberstein, including three-year-old son John Mungo. He is also dad to daughter four-year-old Tabitha and three-year-old son Felix with ex Tinglan Hong.

He also decided to share a story about feeling a little too much after a few massages.
“I went mad in 2007,” he said, rather seriously to the laughing host.
“I got massaged into madness.”
Explaining, he said, “I went on a holiday in the Maldives and I was extremely bored, so I thought, ‘I’ll have another massage.’ I was having about 30 massages a day.”
“At the end of the holiday, I felt a little strange. I got on the plane to go home, opened the newspaper, reading the football results, and I burst into tears. And I couldn’t stop crying for three weeks. It was completely absurd. So I went to see shrinks then.”

The 41-year-old mother debuted her prominent baby bump back in March at the European Premiere of Eddie The Eagle at Odeon Leicester Square.
Speaking at the event to The Mirror, Jamie couldn’t help but gush about his wife, “I thought we’d have a couple of kids but that’s about it. Basically I do what I’m told but she’s an amazing family maker and I just go with it!”
“I love kids. My family keep me honest, I have a weird job, a weird life, but my family keep me quite real.”
When asked whether he wanted a boy or girl, the proud dad simply quipped, “You know what, I’m always grateful for what I get, it would be nice to balance it out a bit.”
The couple are already parents to Poppy Honey Rosie, 14, Daisy Boo Pamela, 12, Petal Blossom Rainbow, six, and their youngest son, five-year-old Buddy Bear Maurice.
In 2010, following the birth of their youngest, Jamie revealed how is wife loves naming her kids with unusual names.
“That would be my wife,” he told Sharon Osbourne of their quirky monikers.
“Jools is definitely in charge of the names, and we’re probably quite lucky it was a boy really, because we were out of names [for] girls.”
It’s no secret that Jools wanted more kids. In 2012, she told Red magazine: “I want a fifth,” she said.
“But I know it would be wrong. I never get any time to spend with Jamie as it is. He has said give it a couple of years, then maybe we can think about it.”
Australian sisters Bronte and Cate Campbell swam their way into the history books on the first night of the Rio Olympics in the women’s 100m freestyle relay and now another Olympic champ, Serena Williams has offered some advice for the sporty sisters.
Serena, who has an athletic rivalry with older sister Venus Williams, was fresh from defeating Aussie tennis player Daria Gavrilova when she was asked what guidance she would give the swimming siblings.
While Serena had to be told who the Campbell sisters were, and what sport they competed in, the world no. 1 was generous in her response.
“Are they competing against each other? What sport?,” Williams asked after her two set victory against Gavrilova on Sunday.
“Oh that’s cool. Well I hope they can get gold and silver – I always root for sisters. As long as there are no Americans in there. They’ve just got to leave it all out in the pool and once they get out of the pool, family first.”
The Campbell girls will likely to go head-to-head against each other in the 50m and 100m freestyle finals in Rio later in the week.
Bronte spoke of her elation after the gold medal victory in Rio.
“It doesn’t get better than that,” Bronte said.
“There is nothing better than this in our sport, this is it, and I can’t believe we finally achieved it after all these years of dreaming of it.
The pair’s mother Jenny Campbell called the win “unbelievably special”.
“It was terrible before and during it, my heart rate was probably about 300,” she said.
“It was just so exciting and all four girls did really, really well. It has been many years in the making.
“I’m going to have two daughters together on a stamp—that is so cool.”
Courteney Cox is reportedly planning to skip the big ceremony, and instead elope with Johnny McDaid.
According to an insider, the pair split temporarily when the sheer stress of planning a big wedding just got all too much for them.
“Making wedding plans was so stressful and it was part of why they split,” the source explained.
The couple sees elopement as the perfect way to escape the stress associated with their big day.
“They just want to do this with a minimum of fuss in an LA registry office, then they’ll have a wedding dinner party at her place with friends and family,” said the insider.
Courteney says her daughter Coco wants to play a very special part in the ceremony… or a few special parts! See what she wants to do in the clip below, then post continues.

Both Courteney and Johnny reportedly want the ceremony to be quick and fuss free with just the two of them, and Courteney’s daughter to David Arquette, Coco, present on the day.
The pair are reportedly planning a wedding in autumn in the US.
“They’ve told people to keep a weekend free in October,” the insider said, presumably for the party after their nuptials.
But according to several sources, the groom’s family are less than impressed with their wedding plans.
“Johnny’s family won’t be happy about this, but it’s what they both want right now,” revealed the insider. “They’re finally in a place where they’re having loads of fun.”
The 54-year-old actress and her 40-year-old singer fiancé then plan to holiday in Northern Ireland, Johnny’s homeland.

Mike Tindall took some time out for a special daddy-daughter day with royally cute Mia Tindall as they supported Zara Tindall competing in a dressage festival.
Little Mia couldn’t contain her delight as daddy picked her up for a galloping piggy back ride around the field.
But there was only one problem: poor Mike was riding blind, as his little princess had covered her eyes!
The pair seemed in high spirits throughout the event, taking turns watching mummy as she rode her magnificent horse around the arena.
Then Mike let Mia have a special treat… a massive icy pole all to herself!
The little one struggled to manage the sweet treat all by herself, but soon got the hang of it.
At one point in the day, Mia couldn’t believe her eyes during a falcon show, where a giant majestic bird flew right up to them.
At first the little blonde was fascinated by the winged creature, but she began to get more uncertain the closer she got to it.
In another gorgeous photo, the two-year-old can be seen with an exhilarated expression on her face as her aunt Autumn Phillips takes her on a while ride down an inflatable slide.
Autumn has previously described her feisty niece as a “little wrecking ball” and a “little monkey”.
After her special bonding time with Daddy, Mia was happy to see mum in all her riding finery, and jumped into Zara’s arms for a cuddle, while Zara addressed the media.

“She’s got quite a little personality on her,” he said in a previous interview.
“We encourage that.”
