Parents risking SIDS to avoid ‘flat heads’

Parents are ignoring safe sleeping guidelines and putting their children at increased risk of SIDS in order to prevent flat head syndrome, a study has found.

Parents are ignoring safe sleeping guidelines and putting their children at increased risk of SIDS in order to prevent flat head syndrome, a new study has found.

Over 100 parents were interviewed by health professionals about flat head syndrome to test their knowledge on its causes and effects. The researchers discovered that many parents were going against SIDS guidelines to prevent their baby from getting a flat head– a possibility if a baby consistently sleeps with its head in the same spot.

Associate Professor Alexandra Martiniuk, from Sydney’s George Institute for Global Health, said the findings were worrisome.

“Parents were very aware of SIDS guidelines and they want to do the best for their child, of course, it’s their baby,” Associate Professor Martiniuk told the ABC.

“But they actually choose to ignore some of these SIDS guidelines because they thought flat head was a more of a reality for them.”

The study found that many parents were rolling up towels and putting them under mattresses to ensure their babies did not sleep with their head in the same position for extended periods of time.

“But, of course, these sorts of practices are quite dangerous because then they create a sleep environment that isn’t safe,” Martiniuk told the ABC.

SIDS risk greater for babies who share bed with parents

Precautions to take when putting your baby to sleep

The tragedy of SIDS is something that strikes fear into the heart of every parent, but there are some simple sleep practices that have been proven to help reduce the risks for your baby.

SIDS (also known as cot death) and fatal sleeping accidents remain the most common causes of sudden and unexpected deaths of infants between one month and one year of age.

Thanks to awareness-raising initiatives such as the SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping program, there’s been an 80 per cent reduction in the number of SIDS-related deaths since 1988.

The program’s guidelines are based on scientific evidence and were developed by Australian researchers, paediatricians, pathologists and parents with input from overseas experts in the field.

Research is ongoing into the causes of SIDS and definitive answers are yet to be found, but here are six precautions to take when putting your baby to sleep.

1. Put baby to sleep on their back from birth, not on the tummy or side. If your baby suffers from reflux or is developing a misshapen or flat head (positional plagiocephaly), back sleeping is still recommended but consult your doctor or the www.sidsandkids.org site for advice.

2. Sleep baby with head and face uncovered. Bedding should not include pillows, doonas, duvets, quilts or cot bumpers, and no stuffed toys before the age of seven months.

According to SIDS and Kids CEO Leanne Raven, “In 2005, the NSW Child Death Review Team reported that almost 60 per cent of babies who died of SIDS were found with their heads or faces covered at the time of death.” Death was attributed to subsequent blocking of airways and overheating.

3. Keep baby smoke-free before and after birth. Don’t let anyone smoke around your baby – and don’t allow smokers near the nursery or near windows or vents that lead to it.

4. Provide a safe sleeping environment, for night and day sleeps – this is defined as a safe cot, on a safe mattress with safe bedding. In April 2013, Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand introduced a new, world-first, voluntary standard for all infant sleep surfaces to reduce the likelihood of death or injury to babies.

According to Dr Ron Somers, who helped develop the new standard, “A baby sleeping on a surface that is too soft has more than five times the chance of dying from sudden infant death than one sleeping on a surface tested to this new Australian standard.”

5. Sleep baby in their own safe sleeping place/cot but in the same room as an adult carer for the first six to 12 months. The benefits of room-sharing include the ability to respond rapidly to a baby’s needs, more convenient settling and closer mother-baby contact.

“Several studies have shown that when a committed caregiver sleeps in the same room, but not the same bed with their baby, the chance of the baby dying from SIDS is reduced by up to 50 per cent when compared to babies sleeping in a separate bedroom,“ says Raven.

6. Breastfeed if you can. Research is ongoing as both breast- and bottle-fed babies have died from SIDS, but there is strong evidence to suggest that breastfeeding reduces the risk of SIDS.

Since 1988, SIDS and Kids has helped save an estimated 7,500 babies’ lives through education and community awareness programs such as the Safe Sleeping campaign.

Thanks to fundraising initiatives such as Red Nose Day, more than $16 million has been devoted to researching the causes of stillbirth and SIDS and find answers for parents. Over 3500 families still experience the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child in Australia each year.

SIDS and Kids provides bereavement support to those affected by the death of a baby or child, and receives more than 10,000 calls for help every year via its 24-hour hotline 1300 308 307.

Madonna wishes “wild child” son Rocco a happy birthday

The songstress proves her rift with son Rocco is well and truly over by celebrating his 16th birthday with a slew of loving Instagram snaps.
Madonna Rocco Ritchie

He may be getting older with each day, but Rocco will always be his mama’s little boy!

This week, Madonna’s eldest son celebrated his sweet sixteen, so naturally, the Rebel Heart hitmaker took to Instagram.

Sharing several throwback snaps of her beloved boy, the mother-of-four expressed her pride and love for the man he’s grown to be.

He’s grown up so fast!

“Happy Birthday to my First Born Son!” the 57-year-old captioned one image of Rocco posed behind a fur shield in Malawi, Africa.

“A true Warrior with a beautiful Heart. Let the Sun shine!”

Another touching snap sees Madge reminiscing about the days when she could comfortably carry her son – then a toddler – in her arms.

“Once my baby always my baby. Happy Sweet 16!” she wrote alongside the black and white pic.

A sweet moment shared between mother and son.

It’s been a rocky year for the mother and son to say the least, but the slew of happy snaps would indicate that the dust has finally settled.

The superstar’s offspring had been at the very centre of a bitter custody dispute, refusing to return to his mother’s New York home after visiting dad Guy Ritchie and step-mum Jacqui Ainsley in December of 2015.

The pair’s case was unable to be settled due to the Material Girl’s commitments of an 8-month long tour, which received copious amounts of backlash due to her sloppy performances and tardy appearances as a result of the ongoing battle.

While performing in Melbourne, the Queen of pop had an onstage meltdown, rambling to the crowd and calling her ex-husband a “son of a b–ch” in between taking swigs of straight liquor from a fans hip flask.

Later in that same performance, she dedicated a song to her son. Childhood photos of the blonde haired boy flashed across the big screens as she said: “If I have learned one thing in my life, it’s just go with it. If you just laugh, it doesn’t hurt as much.”

After finally wrapping her time on the stage, Madonna made her way to London in a bid to mend the rift between her and her eldest son.

And apparently, some face-time was all it took for the pair to get back on track.

Since her touchdown in the UK, Rocco and his mum have been spending some much-needed, quality time together.

Just last month, Madge and her brood embarked on a charity trip to Africa, where they bonded as a family for the first time in a long while.

“Oh Africa you have filled our hearts with joy and appreciation!” she wrote beside one of the many shots that chronicled the family’s trip.

The family has become a strong unit once more.

It has been six weeks since missing Melbourne mother, Karen Ristevski, was last seen at her home in Melbourne's northwest.
Karen Ristevski

It has been six weeks since missing Melbourne mother, Karen Ristevski, was last seen at her home in Melbourne’s northwest. Now, her stepson, who is an ice-addict, claims she may have run away and is in hiding.

In a statement to the police, stepson Andrew Rickard, said the relationship between his father and stepmother was “fake” and built upon money, maintaining their image and their daughter.

He wrote that “a situation developed between myself and Karen which I’d rather not fully detail at this time,” The Australian reports.

The 47-year-old left her luxury home in Avondale Heights at 10am on June 29 after allegedly having a fight with her husband Borce about money issues.

Karen said she was going to get some fresh air but no-one has heard from her since.

Concerns for her safety were raised when she didn’t arrive to work at the Bella Bleu boutique at Watergardens Town Centre in Taylors Lakes.

Her family said she had medical issues and that’s it’s extremely unlike her to not contact anyone in the family.

Karen’s daughter Sarah urged the public to help find her.

She told the media: “I just want my mum to come home.”

Ms Ristevski has not used her mobile phone or bank accounts, or made contact with friends or family since June 29.

If anyone has any information that could help police, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Teen girls share bloody eye-witness account of boy who was killed on waterslide

Two horrified witnesses to the death of the boy decapitated by the world's largest waterslide have spoken out about the gruesome scene.

Two horrified witnesses to the death of the boy decapitated by the world’s largest waterslide have spoken out about the gruesome scene.

Jess Stanford and Melanie Gocke were at the Schlitterbahn water park in Kansas City, Kansas, on the same day a ten-year-old boy was killed on the 17-storey ride last week.

Caleb Schwab, the son of a Kansas state politician, was killed after sustaining a fatal “neck injury” while on the 51 metre Verruckt slide.

“When I heard a noise that didn’t sound like it was supposed to come from that kind of ride, that’s when I turned around,” Sanford told CNN.

Gocke said she saw Caleb falling down the slide, leaving a trail of blood behind him.

“I didn’t understand what was going on so I only saw Caleb sliding down the last half of the slide, and then I saw the blood,” Sanford said.

Caleb’s friend called for help but the medics were unable to revive him, the girls recalled.

“They realised that he was dead, so I don’t think they tried to revive him,” Sanford said.

Authorities have closed the park since the incident occurred.

Tweets below illustrate what the ride looks like.

Another witness to the tragedy revealed some of the gruesome details surrounding the boy’s death earlier in the week.

Esteban Castaneda, who was at the waterpark at the time of the incident said there were several loud bangs that came from the ride before a body washed down the slide after a raft, reported ABC7.

Castaneda said a lifeguard was trying to control the crowd as he tried to help but soon it seemed apparent that the boy had been decapitated.

Castaneda also said that he and his 14-year-old cousin had ridden the slide earlier that day and the teenager had told him that toward the end of the ride his velcro belt had come undone.

PEOPLE reports that the two women in the boat with Caleb – neither related to him – suffered minor facial injuries.

“There was a woman being treated for some kind of injury on her face and head,” witness Kelsey Friedrichsen, 27, told PEOPLE. “That was when my boyfriend said, ‘I think there is someone else.'”

“It looked like he must have somehow been ejected from his seat, bounced around between the netting and the slide and just slid down,” Friedrichsen said. “He would have fallen down without the raft. It’s kind of like a tube.”

Verruckt was certified as the world’s tallest water slide by Guinness World Records – the water park’s website reportedly said riders had to be at least 54 inches (137 centimetres tall) to get on the slide.

Caleb’s parents, Kansas State legislator Scott Schwab and his wife, Michele, released a statement on Sunday night remembering their freckle-faced little boy.

“Since the day he was born, he brought abundant joy to our family and all those who he came into contact with,” the Schwabs’ said.

“As we try and mend our home with him no longer with us, we are comforted knowing he believed in his saviour, Jesus, and they are forever together now. We will see him another day.”

A Schlitterbahn spokeswoman, Winter Prosapio, said the park had been shut down indefinitely and “a full investigation” is underway.

“We honestly don’t know what’s happened,” Prosapio told the Kansas City Star.

“That’s why a full investigation is necessary. We have to understand what’s happened. The Fire Department, of course, is here. (An) outside, inside investigation will be underway, and it will be a complete one… To be honest, this is not something we’ve experienced.”

Hugh Jackman’s latest photo has fans concerned

Fans show their worry for the Wolverine star after he shared a Instagram snap looking significantly aged.
Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman shocked his 7 million Instagram fans when he uploaded a new snap looking almost unrecognisable from his usually healthy self.

In the snap in question, the 47-year-old poses beside a tray of baked fish and although he presents a thumbs up, his gaunt face, dark circles and aged skin has caused fans to share messages of concern.

Behold the photo that has fans sending well wishes for the Aussie hunk.

“I’m worried about you,” expressed one follower while another added “Wow, are you okay? You look a little frail.”

Others shared a different theory; that Hugh was in fact in stage makeup for the third and final Wolverine film, which is to be based on the Old Man Logan comic books.

“He is playing old man Logan so he is likely wearing extra makeup to look older since he is playing an older Wolverine.”

Another added: “Don’t worry. That’s just a “Makeup” for Wolverine 3 movie.”

The star has indeed been growing his iconic Wolverine beard over the last few months…

The Aussie star made Wolverine famous in 1999’s X-Men. He has since reprised the role in six films, including a cameo in this year’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

Hugh has previously spoken out about the role’s physical demands, which requires him to bulk up to the point where appears “animalistic.”

“It’s absolutely physically demanding to play the role of Wolverine. There’s a lot of action, and I try to do as much of it as I can because it’s better for the audience,” he quipped in a 2014 interview with the LA Times.

“You don’t just have to look physically in shape; you really have to be mobile and be able to fight and jump and do wire work and stuff like that.”

“Of course, you want to look a certain way, but to me the look is more about him being animalistic than just looking buff.”

The father-of-two will reprise his role as Wolverine for the eighth and final time in a film based on the Old Man Logan comics.

This olympian has been competing while 4-months pregnant

I learned of the pregnancy two days before travelling.

Most world class athletes would like their Olympic Games preparations to be smooth sailing but that’s not they way it played out for volleyball player Diana Reyes.

Just days before she was set to jet to Rio the 23-year-old was involved in a car crash in her native Puerto Rico and she was sent to hospital for check-ups.

It was during that screening that the athlete learned she got another unexpected surprise; she was 4-months pregnant.

Her doctors reportedly gave her the all-clear to compete in Brazil, and she made the journey to Rio with her team but didn’t tell them she was pregnant.

Reyes said: “I learned of the pregnancy two days before travelling. I can play, there is no restriction. Our coach congratulated me and knows I can play.

There is no official rule stating that athletes can’t compete while pregnant, after all US beach volleyballer Kerri Walsh-Jennings was five weeks pregnant when she and her teammate Misty May-Treanor took him gold at the London Olympics in 2012.

Reyes and her team have thus far haven’t been so lucky. Her country crashed out of competition following three consecutive losses.

A number of athletes – male and female – pulled out of Olympic competition due to fears about the Zika virus.

Brazilian authorities have been battling the mosquito-borne virus, which can cause crippling birth defects, since the outbreak began in early 2015 and athletes of childbearing age were warned of the risks before coming to Rio.
