He just keeps on belting out those tunes!

Simon explained why it was so important to him to raise money for the debilitating illness.

“The more Alzheimer’s kicked in, the more Dad became violent – both physically and verbally – it was incredibly difficult to manage. And terrifying at times.”

Ted’s son talks about how he used to travel around the country singing.

“In the last few years his memory has deteriorated a lot – often not recognising me as his son. Its a horrible illness. However, now when we’ve got him singing again he’s back in the room. It’s these moments that we treasure,” he shared.

“The plan is to share as much of Dad’s singing as we can and hopefully it will help raise money to fund the work of the Alzheimer’s Society – more specifically to go towards paying for a person at the end of the phoneline to help other people like us.”

“I’d love to get him singing with a band, he’d really love that.”

5 ‘unhealthy’ foods that are actually good for you

Forget everything you think you know…
Mila Kunis

When you think of the word healthy, your mind might immediately jump to those trendy Instagram superfoods such as kale, quinoa and acai bowls.

You probably wouldn’t fit peanut butter and wine into the superfood categories, but if that’s the case, you would be missing out on some seriously delicious and nutritious options.

Somewhere along the line, the below five foods got mixed up on the wrong side of the tracks and branded with a bad reputation.

But it may surprise you to discover that some of those foods people deem ‘bad’, can actually help you fight off chronic disease and may even help you shed those extra kilos.

So let’s clarify a few things, shall we?

1. Wine

While drinking in excessive amounts is quite obviously an unhealthy habit, moderate alcohol consumption can actually reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes.

A moderate alcohol intake, which includes one drink for women per day, and two for men, can also help to keep your brain sharp as you age.

A 2011 study found that moderate drinkers were 23% percent less likely to develop mental diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, and if that wasn’t reason enough to treat yourself with a glass of Pinot Noir tonight, red wine and dark beers are rich in antioxidants, which may just help you to prevent the common cold this winter.

2. Potatoes

Somewhere along the line, potatoes got confused as a starchy ball of calories, rather than the delicious superfood they really are.

At just 110 calories a pop, potatoes deliver a feeling of fullness and satisfaction, while providing you with a healthy hit of potassium, fibre, calcium, magnesium and vitamin C and B.

Potatoes have the most health benefits to offer with the skin on, so get the most out these fluffy nuggets by baking or roasting them with a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper.

Try this jerk salmon with yogurt potatoes recipe from our friends over at Food To Love!

3. Coffee

In addition to transforming you into a functional human being before 9:00am, this delicious brew also contains the antioxidant superpower of flavonoids which are an incredible weapon against the signs of premature aging such as wrinkles, sun spots and that loss of elasticity we all dread.

Scientists have also found substantial links between the consumption of coffee and a significantly lower incidence of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and heart failure.

With all of that said, make like Kate and drink up!

As if coffee wasn’t already good enough!

4. Peanut Butter

When you think peanut butter, you don’t automatically jump to the word healthy, but it might surprise you to discover that nut spreads are actually a key component to weight management.

While it’s true that peanut butter is considered to be high in fat, this amount falls into the heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated variety, which are indeed essential in the body’s everyday requirements.

The spread is also choc-a-bloc with protein and fibre, which keep you feeling fuller for longer, and therefor serve as an excellent snack.

Pro tip: Look for nothing but nut options with no added salt for your healthiest choice, or better yet, blend up your own!

Check out this delicious roasted peanut butter muesli recipe here!

5. Eggs

Forget egg white omelettes, in order to get the most out of these glorious little gems, you’re going to need to consume the whole thing, yolk and all!

Eggs are one of the richest natural sources of choline, an anti-inflammatory nutrient deemed essential for neurological function and the production of happy hormones serotonin and dopamine.

And at just 70 calories each, eggs are a great source of protein, vitamin D & B, iron and zinc.

Stay fuller for longer with a good, healthy brekkie!

‘Aussie sluts forum’ is where disgusting men share lewd pictures of women without permission

It is as horrendous as it sounds.

Just when you thought that ‘blokes advice’ was as bad as it got, Mamamia have exposed another men’s forum that will make your skin crawl.

“Aussie sluts” is a forum in which anonymous men post photographs of naked women. Along with the photos they post details such as the woman’s name and where she is from. Predicably, forum members will make lewd comments about her. It’s misogyny 101, and it’s always in session.

The majority of the women featured on the site don’t know anything about it.

Simone Williams is the Mamamia reader who alerted the women’s website about the so-called forum. She writes that her “blood ran cold” when she first set eyes on the site.

“There are sections for schools, for workplaces, for ages and for postcodes. There are gleeful boys requesting photos of girls, using last names and Snapchat handles and describing the obtaining of a nude photo as a ‘win’.

“I see photos of girls I knew in high school, of girls who I met at work and in Grade One and through netball and university. I feel sick as I see the comments below photos of my friend’s sisters and people I follow on Instagram,” explains Williams.

It is as horrendous as it sounds.

Women featured on the site can press charges under Commonwealth telecommunications law. But of course, if you don’t know about it, you’re not likely to press changes.

And, depressingly, women who do want to have their photos removed have to go to the police for help. Which, given the circumstances, some find too humiliating.

Nicola Henry is a senior lecturer at La Trobe University who studies revenge porn. She told Mamamia that many women would be wary of getting police help because of the culture of victim blaming.

“Even if legislation were in place, I just think the fear of not just victim-blaming but also police having access to those images must be terrifying, you’d feel vulnerable,” she said.

Dr Henry notes that prosecuting the sexist forum for a federal crime would send a clear message to the community and to perpetrators that this behaviour was unacceptable.

However, she also said that legislation is not the only solution. Another way to tackle the issue head on would be to better educate young kids about respectful relationships and consent.

“The reality is that people are going to continue to engage in this behaviour whether or nor laws are in place,” said Dr Henry.

In the mean time, we can expose sites like “Aussie sluts” for the misogynistic cesspits that they are. We’re so tired of casual misogyny seeping into our lives. But we’ll never stop calling it out.

This isn’t a one off story that will get lost in the news cycle. It’s part of an ongoing conversation that’s not going anywhere until the perpetrators stop trying to blame women for their own rapes, assaults and sexist discrimination.

It’s a conversation we’ll keep having until misogyny is just a depressing chapter in the history books and not part of every day life.

Is Princess Eugenie set to marry long term boyfriend Jack Brooksbank?

Reports straight out of London claim that Princess Eugenie and boyfriend Jack Brooksbank are due to get married in 2017.
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

The Sunday Express reported that the couple were planning to become officially engaged before the end of the year and were looking move into Kensington Palace.

According to the British publication, her parents Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are “over the moon!”

This would no doubt be the perfect next step for the couple, who’ve been together since 2010.

Sarah is a huge fan of her daughter’s partner.

Princess Beatrice’s dramatic split could definitely factor into Eugenie’s engagement plans.

Buckingham Palace refused to comment on the matter, but a spokesman for Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, denied the report to HELLO!

“The story is not true”, the spokesman said to the publication.

The denial may have something to do with the Duchess’ eldest, Princess Beatrice, just splitting up with her partner-of-ten-years Dave Clark.

Sources close to the pair cited that the issue of marriage was the reason behind the break up.

“They sat down and asked themselves why they weren’t already married and thrashed things out,” a close friend revealed.

With another telling The Independent, “Everyone was a bit down about Beatrice and Dave ending it after 10 years but it’s fantastic news about Eugenie and her sister is overjoyed for her.”

The timing is certainly unfortunate, especially given that the siblings both live together at St James’s Palace.

However, Eugenie may be looking to upgrade.

The Sunday Express claims that Eugenie, 26, and Jack, 29, are planning to move to Kensington Palace’s Ivy Cottage, a three-bedroom home next door to Prince Harry.

The Princess of York met her partner through friends during a break in Switzerland.

Jack, who is the manager of celebrity hotspot club Mahiki in Mayfair, is especially close to the royal’s family. He even attended Ascot with The Duke and Duchess of York.

A family friend recently told The Daily Mail, “Jack is very close to Eugenie’s family. He is always invited away with them in the summer.”

Brendan Dassey responds to his conviction being overturned

Making a Murderer’s Brendan Dassey has released a statement in the wake of his conviction being overturned.
Making a Murderer’s Brendan Dassey

Over the weekend, a major breakthrough came for Brendan Dassey when Judge William E. Duffin overturned his life sentence.

The judge said Brendan was duped by investigators who promised him “he had nothing to worry about,” before adding the “repeated false promises, when considered in conjunction with all relevant factors, most especially Dassey’s age, intellectual deficits, and the absence of a supportive adult, rendered Dassey’s confession involuntary” under the law.

If his case is not appealed, Brendan could walk free within 90 days.

And now, Brendan’s attorneys have released a statement on behalf of the Wisconsin local.

“It has taken a decade but the law is finally bending toward justice in the case of Brendan Dassey.”

“We look forward to taking the appropriate next steps to secure Brendan’s release from prison as soon as possible and are thrilled for him,” his legal reps said.

Steven Avery’s team also responded to the news: “We are thrilled for Brendan Dassey that his conviction has been overturned. We fully expected this outcome from an unbiased court that carefully examined his confession.”

Brendan’s cousin Carla recently uploaded this photo of Brendan with his mother.

“I was just visiting Steven Avery and he is so happy for Brendan. We know when an unbiased court reviews all of the new evidence we have, Steven will have his conviction overturned as well,” a rep said to E! News.*

In 2006, Brendan rose to notoriety as an intellectually-challenged teenager who, along with his uncle Steven Avery, was charged for the murder of local photographer Teresa Holbarch.

At the time of his life sentencing Brendan was a shy, bespectacled adolescent who often struggled to find the right words to explain himself.

The widely popular Netflix series Making a Murderer focuses on Brendan and Steven’s respective trials as well as the fevered interrogation the 17-year-old received from the police, which led to his eventual confession.

Despite retracting his spoon-fed statements from the authorities and later claiming innocence, Brendan was still found guilty of first-degree murder by the jury.

The creators of the show have also sent their well-wishes to the now 26-year-old.

Steven Avery’s team say he is thrilled for his nephew.

“Today was a major development for the subjects in our story and this recent news shows the criminal justice system at work,” a statement for Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos read.

“As we have done for the past 10 years, we will continue to document the story as it unfolds, and follow it wherever it may lead.”

Last month, Netflix confirmed a second season of Making A Murderer was in the works, however an air date has yet to be confirmed. With these huge new developments now coming into play, season two will no doubt focus on Brendan’s potential release.

Brendan, who suffers from learning difficulties, was just 17 when he was convicted for murder.

The story behind the “not all disabilities are visible” sign

Tonya Glennester took her five-year-old daughter into a disabled toilet to give her more space and privacy. What happened next is pretty amazing.

Last week a photo of a new accessible toilet sign went viral around the world. The sign, which features pictures of a man and a woman next to the traditional wheel chair symbol, was designed to remind people that not all disabilities are visible.

The sign has received international praise and has opened up conversations about disability.

So how did the new sign come about? Asda says that the idea was prompted by a conversation between a store manager and a customer.

Tonya Glennester, was visiting the supermarket with her five-year-old daughter, Evalynn. Evalynn has ADHD and autism and can become distressed in noisy or crowded places. Glennester, who also sufferers from health issues took Evalynn into the disabled toilets to give her some space and privacy.

But when the mum and daughter left the disabled toilets they were criticised by people who were waiting to use the facilities.

“I tried to explain that not all disabilities are visible but we were told ‘you don’t look disabled’. We were both really upset and left the store but I decided to go back in and speak to the manager because I know there are so many stories like ours,” said Glennester.

“I am a member of the [local] Autism Support Group and I know several children and adults with additional needs who have been hit by the same brick wall – where society just looks at the cover of the book instead of reading the details so to speak. I just thought it was time for something to be said.”

Glennester, who is a designer and artist, asked if there was anything that could be done to help the situation. Store manager, Abby Robinson took the matter straight to Head Office.

They decided to support customers with invisible illnesses by introducing better signage.

Glennester added: “I was overwhelmed to see that Asda took my concerns so seriously and has made these changes nationwide. So many people will benefit from this – it will raise awareness and help people understand that you can’t always see someone’s disability. The standard disabled sign is no-longer a true representation of the disabled community so it isn’t really viable anymore and it’s great that Asda appreciates that and has taken action.”

Robinson says that she is really pleased with the outcome. “I feel very proud that a simple conversation with a customer and her daughter has resulted in this initiative to raise awareness of invisible illnesses,” she explains.

“This will go some way in helping people’s understanding of this issue and not jumping to conclusions.”

The PR Queen responds to cynics who questioned the timing of her breast cancer diagnosis, weeks after her husband’s conviction.
Roxy Jacenko

Sweaty Betty maven Roxy Jacenko has snapped at cynics in a fiery promotional clip for next Sunday’s airing of 60 Minutes.

The blonde beauty secured a resident spot in the limelight when her husband, Oliver Curtis, was sentenced to two years in jail for conspiring to commit insider trading in 2007 and 2008.

Three weeks on from his conviction, she announced the discovery of a cancerous lump in her left breast, which reporter Allison Langdon pointed out in their one-on-one interview, has caused some members of the public to question the timing of her diagnosis.

“It is what it is. I’m unfortunately the person who has got the cancer, my husband is in jail, and I’m now a single mother,” she snapped in a teaser for the upcoming interview on 60 Minutes before adding, “I don’t really give a f— what they think on my timing.”

Watch the clip in the video player below. Post continues…

“There’s a problem isn’t there – when you announce that you have breast cancer and people’s first reaction is cynicism?” asked the segment’s reporter, to which Roxy fired back, “You’ve got too much time on your hands if you say that.”

“It’s normal people out there,” Allison replied.

“Well they’re not normal Allison. Change your friends,” the mother-of-two retorted, adding, “They can say that, the reality is, [breast cancer] is not something that I ever thought I would face.”

When asked about whether she had any knowledge of the businessman’s conviction, the 36-year-old revealed that they “don’t discuss it”, but insists that Oliver has “got no reason to lie to me.”

The mother of Pixie, five, and Hunter, two, also opened up about her adjustment to life as the sole carer of her and her husband’s children.

As scenes flashed across the screen of her making her way through hospital in preparation for surgery, Roxie says, “I don’t want to let down the children.”

“There is me and only me. So I’ve got an obligation to all of those people to keep running, in heels!”

As for whether Roxy and Oliver have ever discussed his past, the PR guru says it’s not something they talk about. “He’s got no reason to lie to me,” a defiant Roxy explains in the teaser.

The full interview with Roxy Jacenko will air on 60 Minutes this coming Sunday.
