‘We’re not all superheros’: William and Kate offer some real talk on parenting fears

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge share some normal parenting worries as they continue to champion children’s mental health charities.

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge continued to champion children’s emotional well-being and mental health awareness with a low-key visit to a helpline dedicated to assisting adults deal with problems facing children and young people.

On Thursday the royals visited Young Minds in London, which is one of the eight partners of the mental health campaign Heads Together, a charitable initiative the royal couple set up together with Prince Harry.

After speaking to the organisation’s volunteers 34-year-old Kate said that as a mother-of-two herself she could relate to how some parents might feel overwhelmed when worrying about their children’s well-being.

“What we’ve taken away is just how normal it is” said Kate. “We are parents ourselves. I am sure we will face worries. We do face worries, because we’ve got small young children. If those worries escalate, how vital it is to get support – and you are providing that support.”

Kate added, “As a parent and as a mother, having that feeling that there is somebody there that is non-judgemental, that can provide the professional support, and that can really provide helping hand at a really difficult time.”

The couple also listened in on some live calls from adults concerned about children’s mental health and that prompted William to give rare insight into the emotional impact his role as an air ambulance pilot has. The Prince recalling seeing “too many sad families” and feared listening to particularly distressed calls might make him too upset.

“Can I have an easy one please? I’m carrying a lot of things at the moment. I will be in floods of tears at the end otherwise,” William said. “I’ve had too many sad families with the Air Ambulance. I can’t deal with any more stuff. Just maybe at the lower level, if I can.”

The Prince, who donates his salary to the East Anglia Air Ambulance, added: “I’m steeling myself the best I can.”

The future King later said he found the whole experience “very eye-opening.”

“I thought the service was fantastic,” said William. “I think the idea that you’ve got these very caring, lovely people on the end of the phone who listen for as long as they need to, to build the picture of what is going on, and then provide extremely good advice. And then the fact that you’ve got the mental health professionals later down the line if necessary.

“I think that is a really good balance of getting the right support straight to these families who are clearly at their wits’ end at what to do, and reaching out. Thank goodness they do reach out to something like this.”

William went on to poignantly add that it’s important parents understand they “can’t be brilliant at everything.”

“It is totally fine to talk about it and to seek help and to speak out, because we’re not all superheroes,” William said. “There is a lot of pressure on parents, and most of it is self-made by parents themselves, where you feel you have to be able to handle everything. You have to show strength and resilience to everything. But there are some times when it all gets too much and you need to reach out, and that’s totally fine.”

The Prince’s sensitive words come a day after he talked of how he missed his mother “every day” to comfort a young boy whose mum had recently died.

“I know how you feel,” William told 14-year-old Ben Hines, whose mother Alexandra passed away in June 2015. “I miss my mother every day. It’s okay to feel sad.”

The 34-year-old Prince was just 15 when his mother died in a car crash in 1997 and he advised Ben, who is the youngest of three brothers, to make sure he connects with his family over his feelings.

“As four boys, you have to talk a lot better, we’re not good sharers. It’s a classic example of lots of talking needed,” he said.

“Time makes it easier. I know how you feel, I still miss my mother every day and it’s 20 years after she died. The important thing is to talk about it as a family, it’s okay to feel sad, it’s okay for you to miss her.”

6 y.o Oshin’s parents battle doctors over treatment again

His mother wants to give her sick child the best quality of life possible, especially if he's only going to live for a short time, however traditional medicine holds more hope for Oshin to live longer.
Oshin Strachen

Oshin Strachin is a very sick little boy who is unlikely to survive without treatment for his aggressive malignant brain tumour. But the treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy is likely to make him worse before he gets better and this is something his mother cannot bear.

Angela Kiszko, and her husband Adrian Strachen, decided that they would treat their son with alternative natural therapies in Asia. Despite the family’s wishes, a Family Court order in March ruled that they must commence treatment here immediately, reports news.com.au.

This week they returned to court to decide whether Oshin had the right to die with dignity and take palliative care, or if he should continue chemotherapy in addition to radiotherapy treatment instead.

Hospital lawyer, Carol Conley, said Oshin’s latest MRI indicated he was responding positively to treatment, reports Perth Now.

“The applicant wants to give Oshin a chance at life,” she said.

Lawyer for the family, Jun Khew Wong, said Osher’s chances of survival remained low.

“Oshin does have the right to die with dignity,” he said, reports Perth Now.

The case raises a question of who has the right to choose a child’s fate. Angela wants to give her sick child the best quality of life possible, especially if he’s only going to live for a short time, however traditional medicine holds more hope for Oshin to live longer.

Initial surgery removed the six-year-old’s tumour however the cancer returned, and doctors recommended chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Australian Medical Association president Professor Brian Owler said Oshin was unlikely to survive without the treatment, but the survival rate would be well over 80 per cent if he was to have radiotherapy and chemotherapy, reports news.com.au.

When Angela researched the treatment she was horrified by the effects it has on the body.

“I read all the things he’d have to go through, all the side effects — I literally just wanted to vomit and I thought I could not put myself through it. Why would I put my son through it?” she said on 60 Minutes.

Angela described the treatment as putting people through “toxic hell”, so they decided on alternative therapies.

“I don’t want my son’s brain fried with radiation,” Angela said.

“The effects are too harsh, too damaging and I find it really difficult to even call it treatment.”

In April the court heard that Oshin would have a 30 per cent chance of surviving for five years if he underwent chemotherapy and a 50 per cent chance with both chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

At the time AMA national ethics chairman and WA president, Michael Gannon, said it was brave of the court to overrule a parent’s decision because it is difficult to say who knows best for the child.

“There is no doubt at all about this decision being made based on significant prospects of a cure or, if not, significant prospects of a high quality of life for a meaningful period of time.”

Justice Richard O’Brien has reserved his decision until next week.

Bindi Irwin’s boyfriend Chandler Powell performs his first ever “crop jump”

And the wildlife warrior and daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter couldn’t be more proud of her boyfriend.
Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell

Bindi’s wake-boarder boyfriend Chandler Powell has undergone his official initiation into the Irwin family with his first successful “croc jump.”

In a series of shots posted to his Instagram page, Chandler can be seen mimicking the late Crocodile Hunter’s signature moves as he puts his entire body weight onto the majestic nine-foot, saltwater creature.

“Completed my first head jump yesterday on Madison the croc,” the 19-year-old wrote beside a snap of him beaming with the wild reptile.

“Definitely one of the most thrilling experiences! @australiazoo has the best and most experienced croc team in the world, thanks for letting me be a part of it and showing me the ropes (literally).”

He also penned, “Can’t come close to describing the rush we got from jumping this dinosaur. Big Dunc is 15 feet 1.5 inches!! Currently the largest out of the 144 crocodiles being tracked in the Wenlock River. Love seeing the capture techniques created by Steve are still used today to ensure the safety of the crocodile as well as ourselves.”

Chandler on his Croc Trip.

“Thank you @bindisueirwin showing me some of the most gorgeous places in Australia and for letting me jump crocs with you. After such an amazing adventure I can’t imagine what is to come in the future,” penned a very proud Chandler.

And while the moment was clearly a huge honour for the American wakeboarder, having been a long-time fan of the late Aussie legend, it was Bindi who simply couldn’t contain her pride.

Taking to Instagram, the Dancing with the Stars winner shared her own happy snap of the two beside Madison the croc, with the caption: “Today was a huge day for me on this #CrocTrip2016.”

“I was so excited that my amazing boyfriend was given the opportunity of taking the head on the jump team. This technique of croc catching was first created by Dad and the most incredible honour is getting assigned to hold the crocodiles head while we attach a tracking device.”

“To see @ChandlerPowell in khaki as such an integral part of the team was really wonderful. I feel extremely blessed to have someone in my life who is so passionate about wildlife and conservation. #ProudGirlfriend”

No doubt Steve would be so proud of his daughter!

Chandler has taken to the trade like a croc to water!

While it’s clear that Bindi’s fallen head over heels, a telling interview from earlier this month revealed that she won’t be walking down the aisle just yet.

“I don’t think I’m at a point in my life where marriage and getting engaged is really a huge priority right now for me,” the 18-year-old said to Entertainment Tonight.

“Maybe in five years, but right now I’m really happy with where I’m at.”

She went on: “I’m really happy with our relationship and I think we’ll just continue to have fun. It’s just nice to have someone there no matter what.”

Watch Bindi and Chandler tell the ADORABLE story of how they met in the video player below! Post continues…

The loved-up couple met in 2013 when Chandler visited Bindi’s home, Australia Zoo, on a competition tour.

“When the two of them met he was obviously awfully impressed,” the 19-year-old’s grandfather recently confessed to Woman’s Day adding, “Enough that he wrote a letter to the zoo and said ‘would it be all right if I wrote to her?’”

After some good old fashioned correspondence, the teens took to Skype and Facetime in a bid to stay in touch, and it wasn’t long before their friendship turned into something more.

Speaking of how she and the college student make long-distance work, Bindi quipped, “It’s nice when you find somebody who’s just endlessly kind and understands you and is really like-minded. I always get really excited.”

“I’m really blessed and grateful to have him in my life.”

And although there won’t be a Zoo-themed wedding just yet, you can be sure Chandler has mum’s tick of approval!

“They may even love him more than I do,” the brunette beauty joked, referring to her younger brother Robert and their mum Terri.

“I have my family and then Chandler has become a part of the family. He just understands us, he loves wildlife, loves wild places and is just ready to try.”

Bindi’s family adore the starlet’s beau!

Earlier this month, the brunette beauty celebrated her milestone birthday by her boyfriend’s side, back where it all began at Australia Zoo.

Taking a moment out of the fun-filled day to pay tribute to his sweet girlfriend on Instagram, Chandler shared, “I’m amazed by everything you have already achieved and I can’t even begin to imagine everything you’ll accomplish from this point on.”

“I’m very blessed to have you as such a huge part of my life and I’m beyond thankful you’ve let me be a part of yours. I hope today is as amazing as you are!”

As if these two aren’t the cutest couple ever!

Mother’s brag about son’s blackface Book Week costume

An Australian mother has caused outrage after she posted a picture of her son’s Book Week outfit online.

UPDATE:

West Coast Eagles player Nic Naitanui has released a statement addressing a Perth mother’s Facebook post of her son dressed in blackface as a bizarre tribute to him.

On his Twitter Naitanui wrote that the boy was “merely attempting to emulate his hero” but called for more education about the significance of blackface.

EARLIER: An Australian mother has caused an uproar after she posted a picture of her son’s Book Week outfit online.

The West Australian woman shared a picture of her boy to social commentator Constance Hall’s public Facebook page dressed as his favourite football player, Nic Naituanui of the West Coast Eagles.

But the issue was the child was painted brown all over.

The mother was unapologetic in her decision and pitted anyone’s outrage down to them being “politically correct extremists”.

She even detailed how her son had won the Book Week parade at his school (how does an AFL player win “Book Week”?) and joked that she celebrated all her decision making with “a wine before 12pm”.

Yesterday Indigenous rapper, comedian and actor Adam Briggs labelled the mother’s actions as an “obviously reckless, racist thing to do”.

Briggs said at first he “thought it was a set up” but when he realised the mother was serious he outlined why it was so offensive.

“This mother has acknowledged what she was doing was wrong but decided she was going to ‘grow some balls’ and do it anyway with complete disregard to whoever she was going to offend,” wrote Briggs. “Can’t let a little bit of racism get in the way of ‘Book Week’.”

Constance Hall, who has over 800k followers on her Facebook page where the photo was posted, removed the image.

Hall said while she didn’t think the woman was a racist she did not support her decision.

“I don’t agree with dressing your child up in blackface, I can’t defend it,” Hall wrote.

“Because it is hurtful to our indigenous brothers and sisters.

“I don’t believe that the mum in question was behaving maliciously, I don’t believe that she intended to hurt anyone.

“However, I think it was an ill informed decision based on her view that there is too much political correctness in our world.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have continued their mental health crusade in a day that brought forward a lot of raw emotion for the pair.

Prince William and Duchess Catherine were lending a hand listening in to phone calls from worried parents asking advice from YoungMinds, a mental health hotline.

During the day, Wills reportedly asked if he could be excluded from hearing the more distressing stories because he feared he would dissolve into “floods of tears.”

According to The Daily Mail as the pair prepared to listen in on calls from adults worried about their children’s mental health, Prince William said: “Can I have an easy one please? I’m carrying a lot of things at the moment. I will be in floods of tears at the end otherwise.”

The young royal was worried he wouldn’t be able to cope with distressing stories.

He confessed that he had a higher sensitivity for tragedy because of the heartbreaking things he came into contact with while working with the East Anglia Air Ambulance Service.

“I’ve had too many sad families with the Air Ambulance. I can’t deal with any more stuff.”

“Just maybe at the lower level if I can. I’m steeling myself the best I can.”

Johnny Depp donates Amber Heard divorce money directly to charity

But Amber has slammed the action, saying the money was not his to give and that his intentions aren't truthful.
Johnny Depp, Amber Heard

Johnny Depp has decided to cut out the middle person and donate Amber Heard’s divorce settlement directly to charity.

But despite the actor praising Amber’s honorable intentions in a released statement, his ex-wife is reportedly not happy at all.

When the divorce was settled, Amber announced she would be donating the proceeds to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

Johnny reportedly then donated the first installment directly to the organisations, in name of Amber Heard.

“Ms. Heard’s generosity in giving to these wonderful causes is deeply respected,” the actor said through a rep.

Johnny bypassed Amber, giving the cash straight to the charities.

But according to TMZ, the blonde bombshell is calling Johnny out over his intentions.

She claims he isn’t really donating the full $US7 million owed, because by giving the money to the charities, he will be able to make a sizable tax deduction.

Amber is not impressed by her ex’s reportedly shifty intentions.

The 30-year-old apparently said the money was not his to give away.

The model released a damning statement: “If Johnny wishes to change the settlement agreement, we must insist that he honor the full amount by donating $14M to charity, which after accounting for his tax deduction, is equal to his $7M payment obligation to Amber.”

Amber now wants double the amount she settled for to make up for his actions.

Her people continue, “We would also insist that the full amount be paid immediately and not drawn out over many years.”

Amber’s legal team then had a go at the 53-year-old actor’s team, saying, “Anything less would be a transparent attempt by Johnny’s counsel, Laura Wasser and Patti Glaser, to reduce their client’s true payment by half under the guise of newfound concern for charities that he has never previously supported.”

We thought this was all over! See the details of the settlement in the video below.

“Want to say two things about this. I started w/ $7 bucks. If I can overcome, so can you. Waffle House on me!!” The Rock wrote to his some 10 million followers.

His amassed fortune this year has come from upfront payments for films such as Central Intelligence, Fast 8 and the upcoming Baywatch flick that has him starring as Mitch Buchannon, the role David Hasslehoff made famous.

The 62-year-old made $US61 million.

Matt Damon being so high on this list was also quite a surprise.
