Why parents are boycotting Book Week

I had a fantasy about going on holidays during book week so that we could conveniently avoid it. And then I thought there was nothing stopping us from just not attending school on the day.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of watching my kids take part in their school’s book parade. My kids are big fans of dressing up and had been looking forward to book week since the beginning of the term.

They both picked characters with low maintenance looks. Between the three of us we threw some costumes together from things we already had and they were both delighted with the results.

But while book week and the character parade are supposed to be fun, for some families the whole thing can be a bit of a nightmare.

Increasingly, parents are opting out altogether and giving their kids the day off instead.

Mother of two Karen Reily* says that previous book week parades have left her feeling like a nervous wreck.

“I have two children who suffer with anxiety. Both struggle socially, with fitting in, with social pressure to be accepted. The thought of dressing up in front of their peers triggers all their anxiety,” she explains.

“They lack the social confidence to be their own delightful selves. The eldest child in Year 2 is a perfectionist, and doesn’t think any outfit is ‘cool’ enough to fit in with her friends.”

Reily says that last years attempt to create a lion costume for her daughter resulted in “much shouting and crying.”

This year, she has decided to save her children from the stress of book week by boycotting the event.

“One night I thought, ‘why does it have to be stressful?’ I had a fantasy about going on holidays during book week so that we could conveniently avoid it. And then I thought there was nothing stopping us from just not attending school on the day.

“So I asked my children how they felt about boycotting the parade and having a day off school instead. Without hesitation they agreed. I was incredibly relieved and so were they,” says Reily.

Reily notes that while her kids get anxious about book week there are other reasons that the event has turned into an ordeal for parents.

“Not all parents have the resources, time, interest or talent to make costumes. So this adds to the anxiety. There is a secret pressure to perform against the standards of other parents,” she explains.

Reily is not the only parent who is boycotting this year’s book week parade. Michelle Green* who has three school age children says that the showmanship between the kids and parents make the day an ordeal for shy kids.

Like Reily, Green has also decided to boycott. Instead, she is taking her children for a day at the zoo.

But will the school object? Green says that she intends to be honest with the school principal about why her children missed a day of school. However, she is far from apologetic.

“At the end of the day I don’t have to justify my decision to the school. We do what is best for our family.

“In an ideal world there would be options for non typical anxious kids. Not one size fits all. And in my ideal world there would be no book week parade at all,” says Green.

But while book week might not be everyone’s idea of fun, it is an important event in the school calendar.

Primary school teacher Daniel Mitchell says that book week is a fantastic way to celebrate books and literacy in schools.

“It promotes the importance of reading for children of all ages. Children enjoy using their imagination and usually love exploring books during book week,” he says.

In addition to this, Mitchell notes that the early years of school are crucial for developing literacy, so events that encourage reading are really worthwhile.

Mitchell says he understands that parents are busy and that school event puts pressure on some families. However, he doesn’t support boycotting.

“Activities such as book parades are meant to be a celebration and not a cause anxiety in parents and children,” he says.

“Perhaps schools need to do a better job of communicating this to families.”

Leighton Meester and Adam Brody

Talk about a sight for sore eyes!

Leighton Meester and her high-profile hubby broke came out of hiding week when they appeared hand-in-hand for the Los Angeles screening of Adam’s new television series, StartUp.

The small screen stars, who met on the set of The Oranges in 2011, put on an amorous display as they wrapped their arms around each other and smiled affectionately.

The celebratory premiere was clearly a special moment for the couple, as it marked the first time they’ve stepped out together since the Tony Awards in 2014, which also happened to be their first and, until now, last appearance as a married couple.

Leighton, 30, was every bit the supportive wife as stood by her 36-year-old husband on his big night.

The O.C. star and the Gossip Girl alum married in early 2014 after a three month engagement.

Their secretive nuptials have never been spoken about by either party, which is why it came as no surprise when they welcomed their first daughter, Arlo Day, without the world catching a whiff.

Baby Arlo, who celebrated her first birthday on August 4, has rarely been spotted out in public.

With those genetics, we can only image how adorable baby Arlo must be!

Leighton previously opened up to InStyle about how her life has changed since marrying the man who made Seth Cohen famous.

“My values have shifted greatly in terms of what I find important. It’s my family, my friends and having a personal life.”

“Those are the things that need nurturing,” she revealed.

Catherine, taking a bite of the chocolate goodness, revealed her cheeky monkey George creates chaos in the kitchen.

“So, what are you making? This smells seriously good,” she asked about a chocolate rice crispy creation.

“What are you putting in? Is this just chocolate? Golden syrup? Good, good.”

The stylish royal, donning her beloved blue and white L.K. Bennett dress, admitted, “When I try to do this with George at home, chocolate and the golden syrup goes everywhere!”

“He makes so much mess. It’s chaos.”

The topic of George and food came up again, when William and Catherine went to CHUMS, a bereavement counseling service for young adults in Bedfordshire, and Keech hospice.

Suzanne Dow, who has a child suffering from a life-threatening illness, described meeting Catherine as “awesome” adding that she was very “empathetic”.

“[Kate] said, ‘George likes his spaghetti as well, he’d love to get messy!’,” she recalled to reporters.

The pretty brunette recycled her favourite LK Bennett dress, which she wore back in 2014, during her tour of Australia.

Talk show host James Corden was so proud of his sister, Ruth, who chatted to the royals about mental health.

Sharing a chuckle with her prince.

The couple, who made their first appearance since their holiday, were clearly at ease at the Luton based event.

Once again, royal well-wishers were delighted with how Wills and Kate happily shared details of their private lives.

Earlier this year Catherine got onto the topic of cooking, admitted at a gala that she does most of it at home.

Jokingly she mused, “William has to put up with my cooking most of the time!” Not missing a beat, William quipped, “It’s the reason I’m so skinny.”

Last year, former royal family cook, Carolyn Robb, explained to Racked why the future Queen adores running her household.

“They have a small household and can fend for themselves. They’ll probably want to do that for as long as they can. Have a normal family life because that will really change when you have butlers and nannies and cooks around, the house is no longer your own.”

Going into more detail, Princess Diana’s former chef said, “Kate does quite a lot of the cooking at the moment. You have to remember that she’s not royal.”

“She comes from a normal background and a normal home where she’s always cooked for herself.”

Prince William was exceptionally candid during the royal engagement, talking about how he dealt with his mother’s death.

George loves spending time with his mummy, and the princess loves teaching him to bake!

Catherine definitely has a lot of people that she can look to for tips, especially when it comes teaching George how to bake, most notably her brother James Middleton.

The 29-year-old is the owner of the highly successful “Cake Kit Company” who create themed cakes and cake-making kits for birthdays and other occasions.

And of course, there’s his grandma Carole Middleton, who is the mastermind behind Party Pieces.

The beloved royal has a great eye for cakes.

The 34-year-old admitted that she loves to use good old fashioned cookbooks.

During a royal visit, Kate admitted to cooking legend Mary Berry that she loves using her recipes.

“I’m a big fan of your cook books and your cakes,” she confessed, while her hubby William admitted that his “tummy’s a big fan” of the baking queen’s cakes, saying he loved her chocolate brownies.

Michael and Kyly Clarke’s baby daughter now has an Instagram

Is this parenting in the 21st century?

Kyly Clarke, businesswoman and wife to cricket legend Michael Clarke, has opened an Instagram account for her nine-month-old daughter Kelsey Lee.

While some commentators are skeptical about the move, assuming Clarke is hoping to use the account to promote and endorse client’s products, she says this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, she says it’s because she was worried her daughter would one day hate her if she didn’t ‘reserve’ the social media handle in advance.

“I never wanted her to grow up and go ‘mum you are so not cool, I can’t believe you didn’t save my name’ [on Instagram],” she told The Daily Mail.

“She doesn’t post any pictures or have any friends besides her family but yeah I just didn’t want to get told off when she gets older.”

Kelsey has 121 followers so far.

But this whole thing begs the question: is this a worthy parenting concern in the 21st century? Or just something celebrities need to worry about? Let us know what you think.

The pair have made no secret of their beef for one another, but a shocking new clue might have just given away a master plan…
Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel

Well, this is something we didn’t expect!

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Vin Diesel’s public rivalry may just be a publicity stunt to gather traction for a WWE wrestling match in promotion of the pair’s latest film, says Life & Style.

“They are playing a huge prank, and it’s all for publicity,” a source confessed.

“The Rock convinced Vin to amp up the drama between them so they could turn it into a WWE match to help promote the April 2017 release of Fast 8.”

Earlier this month, The Rock took to Facebook with an emotional rant calling out his male co-stars for being “unprofessional” on the set of Fast 8.

While he mentioned no specific names, fans of the 44-year-old, who plays agent Luke Hobbs in the franchise, heavily speculated that the aggressive rant was directed to Vin.

One fan makes an excellent point…

“This is my final week of shooting Fast & Furious 8. There’s no other franchise that gets my blood boiling more than this one,” he began.

Before elaborating on his fury, the actor took a moment to praise his “amazing” female co-stars, which include Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize Theron, Elsa Pataky and Helen Mirren.

“My male co-stars however are a different story. Some conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don’t. The ones that don’t are too chicken sh– to do anything about it anyway.”

The beloved star included a video with his message… and let’s just say there is A LOT of anger bubbling away. Decide for yourself and check it out in the video below. Post continues…

And it would seem that Vin has some angry stories of his own to share in response!

Have they been playing us the whole time?

The former wrestler has been spending a lot of time in the gym… Is he training for anything in particular?

Last week, the 49-year-old posted his own candid Instagram clip, which begins similarly to that of his co-star’s with a wrap up of his time on set.

“After being on set since literally Christmas to finally, finally, finally to come home,” the action hero said looking into the camera.

“And to learn the little angel [daughter Pauline] learned a new word. I’m going to have to share it with you, it’s more important than anything.”

Emily Blunt’s husband Jonh Krasinski makes a sort of embarrassing admission

To be fair, it was going on even before he hooked up with his wife.

The Devil Wears Prada is one of those movies you can watch again, and again, and again – but John Krasinski has really taken it to the next level.

The actor admitted he’s watched the movie starring his now wife Emily Blunt about 75 times, in an interview with E News! And even if he’s exaggerating the number a bit, you can tell he’s seen it a ridiculous amount of times.

“There was one day when it was on and I said it was so good and Emily said, ‘Have you seen this movie?’ I said, ‘A lot of times.’ She said, ‘That’s so sweet, but how many times?’ Luckily, we had been dating for about a year so there was a lot of trust built up and I said, ‘Like, 75.’”

He even admitted that she once thought he was watching porn because she sprung him watching it, so he quickly changed the channel.

“We had just started dating and she had come over to my house. She popped by in between some things and I was watching it,” The Office star said.

“She opened the door and I flipped the channel and she looked at me like, ‘Were you just watching porn?’…I think it was better for me at the time for her to think I was watching porn than watching The Devil Wears Prada for the seventy-fifth time.”

Who gets marry to the star of their all-time favourite movies? You’re a lucky man, John Krasinski.

It really is such a good movie though.
