In news that will shock women everywhere, a female has been interrupted by a male colleague while delivering a speech.
On Wednesday, Labor MP Trish Doyle gave a speech promoting women’s reproductive rights to New South Wales Parliament.
“I believe the woman herself is best placed to decide what is best for her: she knows the circumstances of the pregnancy and understands what she needs,” said Doyle.
“Of course, that does not make it an easy decision, and many women in that situation will need a lot of support to make the best decision for themselves. So I am pro-choice, I am a feminist and I am here in this Parliament to advance the cause of women.”
Her speech was in response to the newly appointed minister for women Tanya Davis, who recently revealed she is “personally pro-life”.
“I strongly believe that people should be very careful about using the term “pro-life” because its meaning is immediately interpreted to be a description of someone who believes they have the right to make other people’s choices for them. Hence, my concern with the Minister for Women’s statement,” said Doyle.
It was at this point, less than three minutes into the speech, that Nationals MP Stephen Bromhead interrupted to accuse Doyle of “attacking” Davis, and Doyle made her feelings obvious.
After serving an eye-roll that would make the ‘Real Housewives of Melbourne’ proud, Doyle went on to express her concerns that Davis’ personal beliefs will impact her decision-making.
“While [Davis] has a right to those beliefs, I believe the women of New South Wales are poorly served by them.”
And one more time because it’s just too good…
Trish, we feel your pain.
